I've only seen the Ultimate Edition. If that's supposed to be the better version, I don't wanna see the worse (theatrical) one.

The movie is a mess that unravels like some fanboy's drunken first draft. Zack Snyder was clearly going for a Watchmen feel without having the one element that made Watchmen so great: a very strong story. Why did nobody see that this script simply wouldn't work? Zack may simply suffer from the Tim Burton illness (can't tell a good screenplay from an awful one), but he probably wasn't the only person who could've vetoed this abomination (where were you, Chris Nolan?).

the many dream sequences only make sense for hard core fans (and maybe not even then)

Their weirdness and incomprehensibility reminded me a lot of Sucker Punch.

Watchmen remains my favorite comic book movie of all time, but after BvS: Dawn Of Justice I have to conclude that Zack may be following in the footsteps of Richard Kelly, M. Night Shyamalan and Neill Blomkamp. He could still turn a good script into a good movie (Ridley Scott pulled off The Martian after some stinkers), but he has to recognize a good script first.

A second trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released:

Looks like just another space action movie. Oh well... I'll go see it anyway.

A teaser is here (unfortunately, it doesn't show anything):

An overview of all US home video releases:

(Nathan Butler's "From The Star Wars Home Video Library" playlist is a must-see for obsessive-compulsive Star Wars video collectors. It covers all American Star Wars releases and the most prominent foreign ones.)

There's also an Honest Trailer:

This time J.J. didn't even bother to record an audio commentary for the movie sad

Aww, man... Hang in there, our thoughts are with you. Let's hope for the best.

The DVD/Blu-ray will come out in April... with some extras only as retailer exclusives. It won't be as bad as STID, but still... Was it your idea, J.J.?

Remember 1995? It was the year that saw the O.J. trial and the premiere of Star Trek: Voyager. The Internet entered public consciousness and Kevin Mitnick was arrested for something called "hacking". Just a few months earlier, Iain Softley (the future director of K-PAX) started shooting a movie called Hackers.

Hackers is a flick that needs to be seen to be believed. Its ridiculously mangled computer jargon rivals the "romantic" dialogue in Attack Of The Clones, but, unlike AOTC, Hackers actually manages to be entertaining. It's an epitome of Hollywood's silly approach to science, a spiritual predecessor to The Core.

Check it out, it's really quite something.

Holy fuck. This is what I've been waiting for: a great Mars movie.

A while back, I mentioned that I don't like most Mars movies that have been thrown at us. Mission To Mars, Red Planet, Doom, The Last Days On Mars, John Carter and Ghosts Of Mars were all unsatisfying to me. The Martian, on the other hand, fires on all cylinders - there's some humor, lots of thrills and magnificent scenery porn. Ridley Scott is cool again.

Highly recommended.

If it's any consolation, I never watched Star Trek as a kid. I haven't seen a single episode of TOS, and DS9, Enterprise and TNG episodes were caught on TV during matiné hours, simply because it was on. I never watched any of the films, and in general, didn't care much for Star Trek in any way, shape or form.

That being said, I quite enjoyed the reboot. And I didn't have a problem with Into Darkness either.

So I guess, from a fairly neutral standpoint, the new films aren't bad, and that may or may not have been the idea behind them.

The Abramsverse movies are much easier to swallow if we forget that they're supposed to be a part of the pre-existing Star Trek franchise. They require a suspension of disbelief on par with the Marvel movies (and even if we give them that, there are some other fridge logic issues).

The ending of ST '09 exemplifies the difference between the old ST and the new one.

SPOILER Show
Things like promoting a cadet to captain simply didn't happen in pre-reboot Star Trek. Wesley Crusher, a teenager who saved the ship many times, was only promoted to "acting ensign" and still had to take the Academy entrance exam. Twice. Kirk's promotion at the end of the 2009 movie was clearly a nod to Joseph Campbell and the way things work in Star Wars. I know the franchise needed to be revitalized somehow and giving it a "Hero's Journey" feel was a pretty safe way to do it, but apparently that meant throwing away any sense of reality. An organization like Starfleet simply can't work this way. STID tries to fix that by demoting Kirk... and then promotes another inexperienced youngster (Chekov) to chief engineer.

Hopefully the new TV show will avoid this.

The Fifth Element episode feels somewhat empty and superficial. The guys simply don't have enough knowledge of the French comic book and sci-fi scene to make the commentary really interesting.

Hopefully we'll get a DIF/WAYDM reunion commentary once the movie comes out on home video.

I was cautiously optimistic and I got exactly what I expected - a fairly enjoyable J.J. Abrams space adventure movie ("J.J. Abrams space adventure movies" are now almost a genre unto themselves) with some "fridge logic" issues.

Instead of having a truly original story, they decided to play it safe by rehashing the first movie (with some elements from TESB and ROTJ); obviously that's a pretty big flaw. But most of the other elements work just fine. The acting is solid, the banter is funny and the entire thing is fun to watch. Finally we got a Star Wars movie that's FUN TO WATCH. While TFA is no masterpiece, it's a step in the right direction.

And yes, "Snoke" is a retarded name (but the character design itself dosen't bother me much).

It's hard to believe that Goldman and Kasdan wrote the screenplay. Some of the character stuff is OK (it felt consistent with other Stephen King adaptations, so it probably comes from the original novel), but the rest is worthless.
