The show has weened us from the pair's reliability as narrators, slowly brought us towards the present day, and have demonstrated Cohle's mental instability. If the last few episodes follow this pattern, wouldn't be surprised to end up at a place where some crazy shit starts happening, but it isn't clear to anyone inside the show's universe, or outside of it watching, if it's imagined or truly supernatural.

Supports the meta-narrative of Cohle's philosophical pessimism as a written character destined to do the same shit forever. The show spinning out wouldn't defeat their fates, but rejects them for oblivion.

Is he a man railing against an uncaring god? Or is he a character in a TV show railing against his audience? Aren't we the creatures of that higher dimension? The creatures who can see the totality of his world? After all, we get to see all eight episodes of his life. On a flat screen. And we can watch him live that same life over and over again, the exact same way.

Yay fatalism.

Oh hey there is a True Detective thread.

Last night around 10 I went, "Okay fine I'll watch the first ep of this and go to bed."

Then it was 3AM and I was caught up. Oops. This is some wonderful television.

Those are some pretty harsh and definitive things to say about someone you have (probably) never met.

Because it's a very well-written, fascinating critical piece on a film that's way more thematically dense than it lets on and might illuminate some aspects of the movie you haven't considered.

I watched it again after reading (and then read the piece again) and expanded my appreciation.

Laurence Anyways

Loved the way this movie felt.

First feature I've seen from Xavier Dolan, his first two are on Netflix, very excited to see.

I would appreciate it if someone could articulate a well-reasoned, "The Oscars are important because _____." sentence.

It was the only beer at the Duty Free I could tell was from Iceland! Took some good brennivín home with me, though.

Would have gone drinking properly in Reykjavík but I had rented a car for the night and wanted to see as much as I could in the twelve hours I was there, so just had a beer on that deck before exploring the park a bit.

Was fucking amazing, need to go back for a proper trip sometime.

Speaking of Icelandic connections, I was wandering around Þingvellir alone at 3am one night over the summer, and like a week later I saw a bunch of location photos where they were shooting in the same spot for some Riverlands thing. Would have been great to stumble upon.

The first is a recut of like the first six or so episodes that have been improved, two has a new character and by the end goes completely off the rails different, 3.0 onwards is a completely alternate storyline but everyone more or less has the same motivations.

The second one is pretty great, give it a chance.

Oh, I'm familiar with the series, both endings, and the other two films in this reboot/retelling tetralogy.

And yet, wtf.

Well, no.

Yeah, I'm far from an expert on anything about this either, but even in my limited understanding I can see the distance between Zen and other Mahayana practices. My flow chart's fuzzy, I don't know enough to know what carries through from where and why. Simplest answer that makes the most sense to me so far is that Theravada asks, "How do I escape samsara?" while Mahayana asks, "How do we escape samsara?"

Your reasoning, tools, and personal experience aren't on blast, I'm down with whatever works for you, too. I just learn out-loud in a kind of abrasive way. Everything is to illuminate some aspects of Buddhism for the sake of the discussion.

Like how it's hard for me to reconcile, for instance, the first line of the Heart Sutra (which by your admission was Dogen Zenji's jam) making appeals to Avalokiteśvara-The-Friendly-Ghost when the entire point of Buddhism is insight into the nature of reality. Huh?

Schools of Buddhism are hugely varied, and nuanced, and sort of tricky to dislodge a western Judeo-Christian bias when examining it since there is no sense of all-or-nothing acceptance or damnation. It's all whatever works for whoever. Except maybe in Pure Land, but that's just accepting grace or something.

Speaking of Judeo-Islam-Christian bias, I've never been able to understand the narcissism and myopia on display by practitioners of those religions that humans forever all over the world and for all time have had their own belief structures and yet theirs is in some way special.
