Oh okay. So what's the release? Or is it a secret?

Yeah, I was wondering why you guys hadn't released the original Strange Days commentary yet. I thought it was pretty good.

And V For Vendetta, oh boy. I'm so torn on that film it's not even funny. I like a lot of things about it, but when you look at what it could have been, the film becomes more disappointing.

Ya'll be trippin'. Riddick is a classic example of a bad movie. The plot is totally overstuffed, and completely nonsensical.

On a similar note, when I told a friend of mine recently that I had the same complaint about At World's End, he told me that he actually liked it better than Dead Man's Chest (because there were less random story tangents and fewer running gags), and that he never understood how people found it confusing. Apparently, he always understood it perfectly. Is that what's going on with the Riddick fans in the room?

You should, like, do a commentary of their commentary, and, like, that would totally show them!

If I'm right, the first post for the thread had better read "Wow, Doc totally nailed it. What an impressive action by this incredible man!"

Alright, we've only got a few hours, wanna start taking bets on what the new episode is gonna be?

My money's on UHF. Why? I have my reasons.

Oh, and I've been resurrected, by the way. Remember me, Zarban's old friend from the first page? I'm back with no explanation.

Well, the first movie I ever saw that showed me that movies could have really great stories was probably Fight Club. In fact, that's the movie that got me on this crazy train with you crazy people, as it sparked my interest in movies enough to make me want to seek out stuff like Down in Front.

But the second step in that process was a little movie called Seven Samurai. It shocked me that a movie that ostensibly had no "interesting" elements (by today's standards) could turn out to keep me so enthralled, and even make me want to revisit it. People often think I'm a snob when I tell them that my favorite movie is a three-and-a-half-hour, black-and-white film in Japanese with subtitles. So far, I haven't actually gotten anyone to give it a try, which is unfortunate, because I know that they would love it.

This is the pinnacle of evolution. The multiverse came to be so that, eventually, through an incredibly complex and indescribably unpredictable series of events, this could be created.

A DVD would be an interesting idea, but are people really going to go for it when they can just download those episodes in higher quality for free?

Instead, you should find some movies in the public domain (Plan 9? House on Haunted Hill? Night of the Living Dead?) do a commentary, sync it up to the DVD, and sell that. I would absolutely buy that, even if the episode was already available for free.

Not to be a jerk, because this was a great commentary, but something about it bothered me. Near the end, you claim that it's okay that Pirates doesn't have complex character arcs or in-depth themes because it's a fun ride. Why is that okay for this film, but not for others you've commentated on? Is it just because this one is more fun than those? Is it that the story is constructed better?

I think this is a question that anyone who loves film has to answer eventually. "Is it okay for me to love a movie that is technically bad (by the rules that I usually judge by, if I still found it enjoyable?"

Dead Man's Chest and At Worlds' End are both better than the first film.

Yeah, I said it.  Davey Jones is the coolest shit imaginable, Jack's death and Barbossa showing up at the end of DMC are both awesome moments.  And if you don't like At World's End, you are watching a pirate movie for the wrong reasons.  It ends with a giant pirate war around and inside a whirlpool, and that film has both Barbossa AND Davey Jones, which means it has very little room for suck.  Every character's arc is wrapped up perfectly, and all the relationships find closure- Davey Jones and Calypso, Will and his Father, Will and Elizabeth (sea battle sword fighting marriage, come the fuck on), Jack and Will, Jack and Elizabeth, Norrington and Elizabeth...

I understand the words people use to say those two movies fell short of the original, but I was on board for every single second of that series.  This one... well, Blackbeard showing up is going to have to work to win me over, as much as I loved the guy as a kid.

Okay, all of that stuff is cool, but none of it makes a lick of sense. I could at least follow Dead Man's Chest, but At World's End didn't make any sense whatsoever. No matter how many times I watch it, I still don't understand it.

Basically, Pirate Whirlpool Battle is cool, but the movie that surrounds it is the problem.

I like the character of Jack enough to see this in the theaters, but if the story is as muddled and confusing as At World's End, I might actually demand my money back.

I agree that that's sloppy. But I don't think it's a huge leap to think that Thor learning that "might does not make right" would lead him to decide they should not annihilate the entire frost giant race. How simple do we really want our movies to be?

The real mistake was probably in portraying the frost giants as blue orc monsters. If they looked more like humans and Asgardians, the connection would be clearer.

SPOILER --> Plus, Loki's parentage would make more sense.

I don't have as much of a problem with Thor's growth in that regard as with how that growth is ultimately borne out in the climax. If the threat was on Earth, and if Thor had to realize that annihilating his enemies was not worth destroying so many innocent lives, I would have liked this film a lot more.

Okay, here's the only thing that really jumped out at me (although I agree with all the other problems previously raised). Why the he'll does Thor suddenly care so much about the lives of the Frost Giants? I think Dorkman already brought this up, but it's a point that bears repeating. Here's what he should have done. He should have allowed Loki to destroy the Frost Giants. Imagine the thematic resonance when Thor realizes that the villain of the movie is right, and that the morally right thing to do is to help him. You guys talk all the time on Down in Front about how the villain is better if he/she actually has a decent point. But that doesn't work if the hero originally shared that point, and if the hero's arc involves him changing his views on that issue. If SERENITY had started out with Mal as an Alliance officer, we wouldn't have seen that the Operative was making a good point, because the entire point of the movie would have been dissuading us from that opinion.

And as for why this movie has Earth in the first place, that's just so that they don't have to do all of that "Thor on Earth" crap in The Avengers.

You should just dub in new dialogue to the existing commentary. It would be super easy, since you wouldn't even have any problems with lip-synch.

Sorry, when I get excited I start speaking Hebrew. I think it has something to do with the mysterious circumstances surrounding my Bar Mitzvah...

Zarban, I expect that to be in my character outline.

This is my new favorite thing.

EDIT: And for the record, it's "his" submarine, not "hers". Just FYI.

FURTHER EDIT: Teague, if it isn't too much to ask, I'd greately appreciate a space between "Doctor" and "Submarine". Changing "Doctor" to "Doc" would be acceptable if space is an issue.
