Topic: (Old Serenity Thread.)

We could try to bring on an amazing VFX guest, or we could do it as a regular episode. Vote that shit, we're here for you. Want us to "dilute" that episode with a guest?

Put a "yes" or a "no" in this format (change the parenthesis to brackets, naturally).

Jeffery, it would be. Then again, so far, the results are overwhelming. So it looks like a no as yet.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Democracy simply doesn't work.

Democracy is stupid. Bring on the guest.

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

What just happened? It's a tie.

Because I understand the enthusiasm of the yes-es, I'd be interested to hear the reasoning of some of the no's. The only viewpoint I've heard to approach that angle is this one, which I do understand. Is this your feeling?

Kyle Mattingly: I don't know if this is representative of the rest of the fan feedback, but as a rule I'd rather hear you, Dorkman, Trey, and Brian than lose one of you, even if you scooped Peter Jackson for your LOTR commentary or something.

ieatyouremo: really?

Kyle Mattingly: Serge and the guy you got for Orgazmo and all that... that's cool, but personally I find myself sitting there going "I really want to hear what Dorkman has to say about this.

Kyle Mattingly: Friends in my head, man.

Kyle Mattingly: I'd rather hear the crew talk about Star Trek than lose two of you to accommodate Shatner and Nimoy.

Kyle Mattingly: Don't get me wrong, I know it does wonders for your podcast to book a "name" on the show, trust me I get that. But it's kinda like wrestling- sure, you can bring in 500 fans if you pay a famous guy 3 grand to show up, but next month when there's no names your regular crew's going to be working in front of 30 people. The ultimate goal is to make the audience emotionally bond with the regulars to the point where they don't care if the 3 grand guy is there so much. You guys have, at least with this particular mark, accomplished that.

Kyle Mattingly: Probably because you all fill a very specific role, whether you noticed or not.

ieatyouremo: to the first: yeah. see what you're saying.

Kyle Mattingly: Dorkman is right about everything, knows what he's talking about, and always has a viewpoint that you never considered before ever. Trey is sarcastic and awesome and old and snorted coke out of model's assholes and brings an old school perspective. Finifter... god fucking bless the boy, he's got more genuine youthful love and enthusiasm for the movies.

ieatyouremo: ROFL

Kyle Mattingly: Trey is Egon, Dorkman is Ray, Brian is the black guy.

ieatyouremo: that makes me bill murray.

Kyle Mattingly: Sir.

Kyle Mattingly: Nobody is Bill Murray.

Kyle Mattingly: You're Venkman if he'd been played by David Spade.

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

That's absolutely part of it. I'm already invested in listening to the regulars and the regular dynamic of the group, so any new participant almost has to win me over.

But I'd also be worried about the commentary becoming too focused on the VFX talk while the discussion about the areas I personally care the most about would suffer.

Good call, that.

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

If the situation is you have a friend who just really wants to give his take on what he did for the movie... why not have a "very special episode" of Down in Front in addition to a regular Serenity commentary? Sort of a Rifftrax Presents or iRiff plus a Rifftrax smile Do a regular episode, then later have one or more of you do an episode with the guest focusing more on the VFX and post both at the same time. I like the idea of having a forum for crew to come out and talk about the finished project, but in ADDITION to the regular show... when possible smile

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

There's no way I'm Zedmore. And if I've got all that youthful enthusiasm, wouldn't that make me Ray?

Oh right, Serenity. I kinda like the idea of the supplemental episode/recording/whatever.

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

I like the supplemental episode, too. I think that's a perfect solution for everybody.

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

Chiming in . . . I would certainly appreciate the perspective of a one or even two grunt-level technicians who worked on the film, with maybe a couple of you guys available to direct discussion and to keep it consistent the mores of DIF.  As another member said, Trey's Abyss commentary was great for the perspective he brought, I'd love to have the level of information for the Serenity film.

Then perhaps a less technically focused geek-out commentary.  Also, there's always the 90 minute Firefly pilot.  Might that also serve as commentary fodder?

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

Aw, man. You guys went and made me think.

Trey puts it best. The four-friends-in-your-head format works really well, 'cause you guys have gotten into this groove of just talking about whatever the hell you feel like talking about. Maybe it's scene-specific comments, maybe it's discussion of a larger context, maybe it's a totally tangential rathole, but I dig it because it's organic like the best conversations I have with stupefyingly smart, slightly tipsy people.

On the other hand, I'd really love to geek out on the in-depth VFX stuff.

So … urr. I'm torn. Of course doing two commentaries would be great, but that's twice the work for you guys, and if you think I'm gonna start paying twice as much for the weekly download, you're nuts. Ahem.

But if I had to choose just one and only one … sigh. Yeah. Bring on the regulars. Your work is awesome, Mr. Zoic Guy Person, but I'm Sophie and you're the kid I just don't love as much. Now pardon me while I go schtup my neighbor and eat some cyanide.

(Also: Teague, did you just give away your IM address on a public forum? Stalkers ahoy, man.)

Dude. You're either up really late, or up really early.

As for the IM thing: true enough. I'm not exactly hiding mine behind a deviously clever shroud of anonymity either, I suppose.

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

Since I somehow missed it the first time I read through this thread, in response to your chat with Kyle Mattingly.

The analogy is somewhat flawed (At least from how I see this podcast), with a wrestling match it is simple pure entertainment, nothing more. And if thats all you guys are trying to do with Down in Front than fine, feel free to ignore the shit outta me. But somehow I've gotten the feeling you guys are trying to do more with thing.
So I would propose a better analogy. A scientific conference. So every year you book some of the same old same old guys to come in and talk, and I mean sure there stuff is interesting and pretty cool. But then one year they have the opportunity to bring in the man himself, Einstein. Who, lets face, is gonna have some seriously cool shit to talk about.

I have always seen Down in Front as an outlet to expel cool information and thoughts on movie making, of which VFX are a major part nowadays. So why should you pass up the opportunity to talk to someone with more knowledge than you (And share it with the rest of us tongue ) simply to maintain the status quo.

If you can't tell I feel very strongly on this subject and I would hate to see Down in Front get stuck in the rutt of "Well they like us, so it can only ever be us."

Re: (Old Serenity Thread.)

I guess in my mind it comes down to opportunity cost. If we take as given that the guys are only ever gonna do one "Serenity" commentary — which may not be a valid assumption — then obviously I want it to be as entertaining for me, personally, as possible. And since I … well … don't actually care for "Serenity" all that much, listening to VFX talk sounds good to me.

Okay, look. That deserves some explaining. "Firefly" was the shit. I absolutely adore "Firefly." Got the DVDs, watched 'em so many times they're practically worn out. But "Serenity" just didn't work for it. It didn't feel like "Firefly." It felt like something else, something I didn't like nearly as much. The soul was missing.

Anyway, I'm officially revising my vote. You guys have done right by me so far; you do whatever you think is best for this one.
