Topic: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

I'm all about new sci-fi coming to theaters, but Cruise seems to be really cranking these things out one after another these days with Oblivion coming out this year. It looks interesting. They got me curious of where they plan to go with the time travel element.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

I'm 100% in. Especially after Oblivion ended up being pretty awesome, Cruise clearly knows what he's doing.

Also it's fascinating to watch video-game influences creep into mainstream movies. This looks like a game more than anything I've seen in a long time.

Looks good to me, and I like Liman's stuff in general.  Cautiously optimistic.

btw, "Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise" sounds like the title of a syndicated talk show that would air around 2 AM.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

Space Marine Groundhog Day? Sure, I'll see that.

Saw video-game influences on the fucking opera I saw last night. There was this whole side scroller sequence where characters were running in place while project – whatever, can I find a video?

...yes.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

I read one of the earlier drafts of the script for a class. The action sounds beautifully brutal but the actual story and characters are weak. However, the explanation for how/why the time-loop happens is the absolute worst technobabble bullshit ever conceived.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

Much worse than that. I give that line some leeway because it's Jeff Bridges being himself. I might as well post the specific exchange of dialogue so you guys know what I'm talking about. Exactly how much traffic does this forum get? I don't want to risk a chance of hurting anyone, besides myself, by posting it.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

Source Code had a similar premise, but this time with a proper budget. Yes, like a computer game - respawn when you die. And of course, you always need enhanced superhero powers in these tentpoles. This time it's delivered by mech technology, but in other movies it's due to genetics, adrenalin, low gravity, magic, talisman, gadgets, mutation, CIA spy training, Chosen one, etc.

not long to go now...

I love that power armor, or rather armory. Some of the visuals remind me of the book Armor.

"You're not going in there" or whatever the line... umm, buddy she's been doing this a lot longer than you have tongue

Looks good. I wonder at how well it'll be played primarily for drama; typically this sort of thing has been played for laughs (Groundhog Day, "Window of Opportunity") on top of whatever drama is happening. I look forward to seeing if they can utilize it well.

I didn't know they were doing a Source Code remake already.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

Well, since Source Code is a pretty weak excuse for a sci-fi movie, I'm all for it.

I believe this approach was also tried as a network TV show with Taye Diggs called DayBreak.

Source Code isn't that bad. It just has a terrible, terrible ending.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

I'm all for melodrama with 'splosions, I just don't want it to come in the form of another fucking Batman or Avenger movie.   Edge of Tomorrow may or may not have a great story, but at least it's a story I haven't already heard.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

Aliens invading Earth? Looked to me like humans were invading an alien planet, a la Starship Troopers.

It's a about time Starship Troopers got a good treatment wink

Actually, it reminds me more of the life of a video game character-live, die, repeat is essentially like playing multiplayer.

I at least like the mystery of the premise.

To be fair, those are CLEARLY the Cliffs of Dover they're flying over at the beginning.

Whatever, I'll take this premise over Transformers or Star Trek Into Darkness any day of the week.

I'm a big fan of stories involving time-loops, so curious to see what they do with it.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow, with Tom Cruise

Time travel stories, loops or no loops, will require some form of technobable so I think I can forgive it that point. Quantum temporal mechanics are not exactly the easiest of building blocks... wink

But, it certainly has an interesting premise, ignoring the temporal mechanics, especially Cruise's line regarding not being a soldier, implying that this might not have been his original career. Again, a good trailer causing more questions than revealing the whole plot (at least, in theory).

If they explain the time loop in the same way Groundhog Day did then I'm on board.

If you look closely at frame #659, Tom Cruise is wearing Hermione's Time Turner necklace, which now also explains why she didn't use it later.

They all broke in the battle at the end of OotP. Also, the Time Turners are awful time-travel devices for ANYTHING except going to more classes.
