Topic: Breaking Bad

Does anyone on this board watch Breaking Bad?
I just bought / watched Season 3 & I'm pumped for Season 4 to start.

I've been worried for a long time that this show is going to go the 'it's all a dream' or 'Walter Mitty' ending where we see Walt dozing off during a chemo session....

No, but I've been meaning to. I'll get to it eventually I'm sure.

Same here. Right now a friend is trying to get me hooked on True Blood, so I have to get through that first.

Re: Breaking Bad

I rarely follow tv shows anymore, I think the only shows I follow are Top Gear and Doctor Who. And The Walking Dead when the next season starts, maybe.

Re: Breaking Bad

I follow like two shows right now, and Breaking Bad's one of them. Was only vaguely interested until I did some work on the third season, and did a "Ohhhhh, this is like THAT". Ran through all three seasons pretty quick after that, it's one of the best things that has ever been on TV.

There's a billboard at Sunset and La Brea I've seen everyday for the past couple weeks that makes me get giddy with anticipation.

OP's concerns for the ending don't make much sense and make me wonder if he's actually been watching the same show.

Re: Breaking Bad

I recently watched the third season of Breaking Bad for the first time as well and I'm ready to put the series ahead of, or at least equal to, The Wire on my personal rankings if the show wraps up well enough. I like to summarize The Wire as a study in sociology and Breaking Bad as a study in psychology. Both are fascinating for similar yet different reasons. Anyway, on the subject of the show at hand, the acting and cinematography on Breaking Bad are simply unmatched by anything else on television. I also hope this season contains the inevitable scene where Hank realizes that Walt is Heisenberg. I cannot wait for the shit to hit the fan with that revelation.

I understand that my feared ending may not be plausible, but I've been burned so many times before...

I thought he would've figured it out before a few times. Hank is a character I HATED in season 1. I couldn't believe how much I sympathized with him in Season 3, I even said to my wife, "Hank doesn't deserve this.".

Re: Breaking Bad

I loved last night's premiere. Gus slicing that guy's jugular vein with a box cutter and then holding him while he bled out was the most violent thing I've ever seen on television. The cinematography and editing continues to be tremendous. The match cut from the mop in the pool of blood to the french fry in the ketchup was outstanding. Seriously, if you aren't watching this show, you need to get on this shit as soon as possible.

Good. I don't want this dragging out past the point of excellence.

Re: Breaking Bad

After tonight's finale, I can safely say that Breaking Bad is the greatest story of either book, film or television that I am ever going to experience. I cannot wait for the final season. I need to go freeze myself up in the mountains like Cartman did for the Nintendo Wii.

Re: Breaking Bad

Eh.

I love Breaking Bad, but that's a big statement.

When I say greatest, I don't mean objectively, I mean my own personal favorite and by far for that matter.

Re: Breaking Bad

Redacted. I don't think it was really a spoiler, but better safe than sorry.

Re: Breaking Bad

I haven't seen season 4 because my only means of watching the show is on Netflix.  That said, this show is awesome, I shouldn't have held out on it as long as I did and once again Ewing is right about awesome TV.

Though he does like LOST and I have serious doubts I'll ever successfully enjoy that show.

We were talking not too long ago about how awesome a Dexter/Breaking Bad crossover would be.  I might write that fanfic.

When.

Re: Breaking Bad

Trust me, that's hardly a spoiler. I might as well have said, "Something really exciting happened!"

But if you do feel like I spoiled it for you, I sincerely apologize.

I loved LOST up until the final season and then it squandered almost all of my good faith. I can't say I hate the show's entirety, but it went from a love to a regretted liking. I still highly recommend the first season just for the pair of Locke centric episodes at the very least. That's not to say the other seasons aren't enjoyable but most of them involve a gigantic leap in terms of themes and concepts from the first season. On top of that, almost all the cool shit introduced isn't fully resolved until the last season and even then it turns out most of it was all part of a bigger thing that wasn't nearly as satisfying. However, even if LOST had an amazing final season, it would still probably pale in comparison to Breaking Bad and The Wire.

You remember that drunken phone call I made to you at like 3 am in the morning back in June? Even my boozed up mind was able to comprehend and recommend Breaking Bad. Oh and if you want Season 4, I can hook you up.

Re: Breaking Bad

As I understand it, (and I could be TOTALLY wrong, just basing this all on observations of public material) AMC took a gamble by letting talented people make the shows they wanted to make, and gave up the creative input almost every other channel has over its programming. The shows they've been putting out: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, etc. all got SUPER popular, relative to a small cable network, but they fucked their bargaining power against the shows since they never really helped develop the shows.

The longer a scripted show is on the air, they tend to cost more and more. And the increased cost of production might not coincide with the amount of subscribers or the ad dollars they can get for their shows. Hence this drawn out holding pattern where contracts are hashed out, showrunners butt heads with channel execs, and we see a year or more while shows cycle into and out of higher and higher cost productions.

Could anyone with a better knowledge of the production company-channel-advertisers dynamic speak any truth or corrections to this reading of the situation? Just curious to know if I'm talking out of my ass.

Re: Breaking Bad

Trey or Dorkman should know the answer to that question.

Re: Breaking Bad

That. Fucking. Cliffhanger.

SPOILER Show

Please come back in March or April. I can't wait until July.

Re: Breaking Bad

Didn't get into Breaking Bad until after season 4 was done but decided to go ahead & watch the 1stseason to see if it was worth checking out.  After season the 1st season I decided that it was worth it so I got all 4 seasons on DVD & did a marathon watch.  1 thing I like is that the show doesn't try to go for the "happy ending" to particular storylines & try to keep this as real as possible.

Sadly before season 5 was to start Dish Network went ahead & removed AMC, so I had to watch the new episodes by other means.  Got to say that the 1st half was done & sent up for the end of the series.  The cliffhanger was a good way to make the viewers even more eager for the final half to come out.  Can't wait to see how they plan on a show that I've come to enjoy but I'll be watching as it happens.

Re: Breaking Bad

I gotta say it, while Season 5 has been my favorite up until this point, I thought this final cliffhanger episode in particular was super inconsistent and disappointing. Lots of character motivations that don't make sense, and suddenly the show is using time-lapse like crazy and jumping super quickly through pretty important details.

SPOILER Show
So Lydia, who has been paranoid as hell, near nervous breakdown, and begging to leave the business, is suddenly a criminal mastermind who wants to expand operations like crazy despite her company being under investigation? Bullshit. Then Walter, finally decides to get out of the business, despite being megamaniacal and not caring about the money earlier. Ok, I'll give them that one, but you're telling me that A. he's able to just stop cooking without any repercussions from the massive enterprise he just set up? I'm sure they'll get into it more next year, but not even having a scene of him telling Lydia and Todd that he's out seems like pretty important details. And B. Skylar just takes him back, like nothing's happened? She's been shown to be near suicidal and wanting him dead, but the second he says "I'm out",  it's all water under the bridge? Don't buy it.

And I'm really not digging the way the big reveal happens at the end. I'd kind of hoped that Hank would start to put the pieces together through his own detective skills. Having it be just this random object that was barely even setup earlier seems kinda lazy and short-hand to me, although I get what they're going for.
