Being John Malkovich. Has there ever been a movie where puppeteering plays a bigger role? This seems to be in The amazin' stokes wheelhouse.

True dat.   I lost count of how many people told me I had to see Being John Malkovich before I finally saw it.    When I did, I loved it, it's defintely a one-of-a-kind flick.    Some great puppetry in there, too.

And John Cusack looks just like me, so it's kind of eerie.

Re: Suggest a movie!

David Lynch's Dune. I've been waiting for a commentary on it. The only one I can find is a pay riff track.

And finish the original SW trilogy.

And Bram Stoker's Dracula would be Excellent! You can take the "excellent" as either Ted Theodore Logan or Mr. Burns. Both work.

Cloe would be on for Dune, unless the other three regulars all feel strongly. She loves that movie and is better at making me shut up about things than anyone I know.

And I recall strongly disliking it.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I drove 50 miles to Ottawa in a blizzard to see Dune in 1984 and fell asleep during the movie, so i can totally understand why someone would hate it. But there are some great moments.

There's something funky about some movies around that time. ST: TMP, Excalibur, Dune. We'll never see big budget sci-fi movies with that kind of tone again unfortunately.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I just got a kick out of how they actually handed us a sheet of paper with a glossary of terms to help us understand the film. Sure, we're use to some SF and Fantasy books having that, but how often does a movie?

Not sure if these have been suggested, but how about Gattaca and/or Fast Times at Ridgemont High?

I love SIn CIty, and as ad hoc Comic Book guy, Id love a crack at that.  Gattaca is badass, as well.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I remember liking the Studebakers in Gattaca, and the bigotry. But the level of security made no sense, and the story seemed to drive the main character rather than the other way around.

Re: Suggest a movie!

A movie that was much hyped at the time. It had some great moments and only came out in 2005. I think peter jackson's King Kong is never really spoken of in terms of movies in the last decade.

You know, I rented that one more out of curiosity than anything, and I found myself enjoying it despite myriad obvious reasons not to.

Re: Suggest a movie!

KONG 05 was a bangin 2-hour movie in a flabby 3 hour body.

Funny thing is that I initially defended Jackson's choice to make a 3 hour film when the reports first came out. I can totally see how you can make a powerful and exciting 3 hour KING KONG.

Jackson didn't make it, as it turned out, but I think it could be done.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I'm weird. I enjoyed the non-actiony parts more than the actiony parts. As I get older, more and more big action set pieces just bore me, and I find myself daydreaming until the next dialogue scene comes along.

I loved Jackson's Kong. I don't know what he could have cut out. I even like the extended version.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Jackson got a lot of flack in LOTR for spending a lot of time on characters (Frodo in particular) looking emotional in close-up. I don't think that's a problem in LOTR, but I think that's definitely a problem with KONG.

When the ape gets tranked, we spend forever watching in slow motion as he loses consciousness, and the guy who shot him lowers the gun, and Ann looks at him like NOOOOO, and the guy finishes lowering the gun, and Kong is like WHHYYYYY and Ann is like NOOOOO and Kong is like WHHYYYYY and some other character is like WHOOOAAAA and Kong is like WHYYYYY and Ann is like NOOOOO and in a wide shot they're both like WHYYYYNOOOOO...

I mean, there was a lot of that already (see: Boromir's death), but it's like Jackson thought THAT was the reason LOTR made money, so he did it MORE.

You could tighten up the flick so much just by taking the maudlin down to 10. Not to mention cutting out the Jamie Bell character and his mentor, who had half an arc and no payoff.

And just get them to the damn island sooner.

I liked the film but there was a lot of fat to trim. I still haven't gotten around to watching the extended edition and it's not high on my list.

Narc. Good movie. And it only took about 30 producers to make it.

Rampage.  Uwe Boll has made a movie which critics are saying is worth watching, and is well made.  I would like to hear what you guys think of it.

I say someone needs to cut together the 1976 version and the 2005 version into a single cohesive version. I'd take Langue, Bridges, Grodin, and the natives from 1976; Kong and the monsters from 2005. And trim it all down to 2 hours.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Dead Man! Johnny Depp running around in the best anti-Western Western ever killing white guys with his new best friend, an exiled Native American with a total boner for 18th century English poetry. And an improvised Neil Young soundtrack.

The Fall! Kind of like if Grandpa from Princess Bride was paralyzed from a fall stunt gone wrong and tried to get Fred Savage to bring him enough drugs to kill himself by spinning a tale about bandits, evil governors, and Charles Darwin.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I liked THE FALL a lot, especially visually.

The most interesting thing about THE FALL, to me, was the disconnect between the story each character thought they were telling. The stuntman performs in Westerns. He's telling her a Western story, as far as he knows. But when he introduces the character of The Indian, she pictures someone from India, which completely alters the flavor and understanding of the story in her mind. The tension -- and harmony -- between the story he's telling her, and the story she's telling herself, is really entertaining to watch.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Just finished the '82 version of TRON. Had to watch it after seeing that badass trailer for 'legacy' coming this winter. Even checked out the commentary by the Director and visual effects guys. Glad to see the original director and actors are coming back. I have to say, I've listened to hundreds of commentaries and read dozens of books on behind the scenes movie making, and I seriously need the Cliff-Notes version to how this flick was made. I'm submitting this gem for the DIF teatment. I know that previous commentaries have mentioned effects "AT' and "BT" for after and before TRON. School the minions DIFers. Thanks.
