There's something else going on here. Inglourious Basterds and Django both leaked during pre-production, and that sure didn't stop him. He clearly didn't have a lot of stake in this project. Could also have something to do with Harvey Weinstein's recent "I'm not doing any more violent movies" announcement.
The difference might be that this was a first draft, the kind of thing you don't want out there. The other leaks might have been closer to the shooting script.
That's a bingo. Those other leaks were all tagged "Last Draft," ready for action. Those were the scripts he was planning to shoot (and did), so they represented a version of the film that he was comfortable going out into the world. This was a first draft, NOT something that necessarily represented the film he intended to finally show audiences.
Good point. I will say that I don't understand why people on Twitter flipped out about this. We knew next to nothing about this project. As long as he keeps making movies, I don't care which ones he chooses to make.
QT said he's walking away because he sees it as a personal betrayal. Sounds like he suspects Bruce Dern. He went on to say he enjoys when a script leaks later in production - he's flattered by fan interest. He doesn't care about leaks inherently, it seems. Just not when it's an unfinished product and by a friend.
He also said that he wants to include Dern in his next project anyway, because he feels bad. I think he's more pissed at Dern's agent for distributing it.
It's a bummer cause it sounded like an awesome project and it was all set to go. Who knows when he'll be done writing the next one, and when THAT one goes into production?
Is there no chance that this will just blow over and he'll reconsider? (I say this not having much experience with Tarantino the person outside a few interviews.)
Possible, though not likely. More likely is that he goes back to this script and makes it AFTER whatever his next movie ends up being.
It's particularly a bummer cause good Westerns almost never get made anymore, and this could've been a great one. Pretty much no one except Tarantino has the clout to get a Spaghetti Western made in 2014.
Gosh, this would be a good excuse for you guys to watch Bruce Dern in The Cowboys and do a commentary for it!
Or Silent Running? Come on... spaceships!
I get why he's so angry. If I were an Oscar-winning screenwriter and someone leaked a first draft I'd entrusted to him/her, a project I was excited about, I'd be pissed the fuck off too.
This just in, Quentin Tarantino is suing Gawker for copyright infringement and promoting illegal downloading of the script.
