Oh yeah...this will end well.
Come on.
Not one single goddamn person knew about Disney buying Star Wars, but now suddenly people's "inside sources" are reliable? Don't do that to yourself. Don't give these hit-whoring assholes any more page views. If there's news, we'll know from the right sources when appropriate.

Also - as many people have pointed out in response to this rumor - Fox still has the distribution rights to the existing Star Wars films. If Disney had somehow wrangled distribution back from Fox, that'd be the REAL surprise, not whatever version they're releasing.
I have great bootleg editions (the Despecialised Editions for those interested) already, but despite this I suppose I would be tempted to buy official versions in a nice box. If it doesn't happen though, I won't be too disappointed.
I think it may be a case of ALLOWING, not releasing. There were two things which Lucas, personally, wanted to never see the light of day again: the original cuts of the first movies, and the Holiday Special. So, what did we see released by Rifftrax within months, if not weeks, of Disney buying Lucasfilm? The video on demand version of their Star Wars Holiday Special riff. Now, Disney did not provide a good copy, as we're seeing the same taped from TV version the original mp3 version was synced to (and which they sort of illegally pointed you to when you bought it), but still. Disney let it come out.
So, what has to happen for us to get the original trilogy? Disney just has to say "yes" when FOX asks. That's it. They need do no work, spend no money. They give FOX whatever assets they need, perhaps, yes, negotiating a fee, and then step aside. Maybe Fox pays them to do the restoration, who knows.
It's not gonna make or break my reaction toward the movie, obviously, but I don't like it. It's just so vague and nonsensical. With The Phantom Menace we knew that the menace was most likely the Sith, and Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are both concrete titles. But what does "The Force Awakens" even mean? Has it been asleep for the last six films?

No, it's called "Attack Of The Clones" !
But what does "The Force Awakens" even mean? Has it been asleep for the last six films?
I'd assume it's been asleep since 1983
I don't get what there is to not like about the title. It's not going to tell us the whole plot of the movie (though I think we can make some accurate assumptions based on this). The Empire Strikes Back is a similarly vague title. We don't know any of the details, but we know that the Empire is going to strike back. Same here. We know that the Force will awaken, presumably in some of the newer characters, but everything else is a mystery.
I'm pretty neutral on the title. It's fine. Not bad.
Weirdly, the first thing I thought about the new title (After the obvious reference to the capital-F Force), is what new force is now arising in the universe in the power vacuum of the Empire?
I'd be willing to bet there's a reference to the new Sith guy we've been seeing sneaks at in there.
Ooooh. Not that "the new Sith guy we've been seeing sneaks at" is really a spoiler, because it would be dumb to assume we're not gonna have a bad guy... but I haven't been getting sneaks at him, so that reminds me.
Let's all adopt the assumption that people are going to be psychotic about Star Wars spoilers. When in doubt, please use the spoiler tag when discussing Star Wars developments in this thread, indicating what you're in doubt about. ("Possible plot spoilers," "possible character spoiler," etc..)
So just spoiler tag everything then?
Spoiler tag should be used when discussing a piece of information about the movie that you can't get directly from a poster or trailer. This is Star Wars specific, btw — not, like, FIYH-wide for everything ever.
Like, if you're expounding on the relevance of something in a poster or trailer, such as the name of a cast member or who that shadow-y character in the trailer was, just do folks the courtesy of being like "I'm gonna speculate about [that-thing] real quick," and do a spoiler box. I'm assuming most folks will be lookin' at those comments, but some might not want to.
Bear in mind, we're almost certainly going to have a SW7 discussion thread in addition to this thread. This is just a thread for that Intermission.
But what does "The Force Awakens" even mean? Has it been asleep for the last six films?
Actually, when you think about it...it kind of has. I mean, in the prequels there's an entire Jedi Order that uses the force and the force itself is generally understood to exist and be a thing. However, at the end of Revenge, Anakin murders all the younglings and the remaining Jedi Masters are scattered and in hiding.
By the time we get to New Hope, the force itself is referred to as an "ancient religion" and is generally dismissed and forgotten by the majority of people. I mean, in the entire Original Trilogy we only see a handful of people actually use the force -- and by the end of that story arc all but Luke are dead.
In theory, from the viewer's perspective (and excluding expanded universe knowledge) Luke is literally the only known practitioner of the force in the universe at that point.
My guess is that "The Force Awakens" means that for the first time since the end of Revenge, the force begins manifesting in people again for some reason. The reason itself could be the mcguffin, or it could just be the environment, setting the stage for a story to take place within a world more akin to Menace.
Either that, or the boring option, which is some "ancient, evil force" awakens and that's the big bad.
I'm indifferent to the title as well. It's not bad, it's not good, it doesn't affect my anticipation of the film one way or the other. It's not pulpy enough, though. My Star Wars can always stand to be pulpier. Like my orange juice.

IT'S HERE.
IT'S HERE.
SPOILERI'm incapable of being critical of anything but the saber effect, because OHMIGOD IT'S THE FALCON YOU GUYS.
I feel the same way, but let's not forget that The Phantom Menace trailer was also very well received. I'm trying not to get too hyped up.
I for one am tired of trying not to get too hyped up for things. I may be disappointed all I want a year from now but for the moment THERE'S A FRIGGIN NEW STAR WARS COMING HOLY SHITBALLS YEAH
...basically.
I had dreams of not being the guy to get to super fracking sugar-rush levels of insanely hyped...but yeah, fuck it...
I AM SO GOD DAMNED EXCITED FOR NEW STAR WARS!!

Perfect choice. Although, those guys would be good for anything. But omgggg
The pure, absolute, unwavering glee of Simon Pegg in this video just makes me so happy. Plus you know, everything else amazing about this.
I feel like I'm ten again. I haven't been excited for anything like this in *years*. For whatever reason seeing Daniels get put into the suit is what gave me the chills in this one.
