Re: Documentality #1 - Foreword

Eddie, the day after you and Paul saw Act of Killing, he saw Blackfish. And then, because he's an autosadist, he wanted to complete the feels-bad-man trifecta and we watched Dear Zachary, which he hadn't seen.

I don't know what you did to that boy, but he seems to be recovering nicely.

I liked Blackfish okay, but The Act of Killing blew me the fuck away. I'm still thinking about it. Glad to hear you guys will be giving it attention.

Re: Documentality #1 - Foreword

Blackfish looks amazing.  I know he and I had different reactions to Act of Killing, which we'll talk about on the show.

As a matter of fact, I'll go see Blackfish and we'll do the feel bad trilogy as an ep.

I've never quite seen anything like Act of Killing.  I also don't know of how you could get that level honesty out of people in another environment or circumstance.

As an aside, I tweeted that Paul and I were about to see Act of Killing and Drew McWeeny from Hitfix wrote me, "Brace yourselves.  It's going to hurt."

On The Daily Show just now, John Oliver said that The Act of Killing took him two hours to watch "and about three days to get over." That was my experience, too. The filmmaker, Joshua Oppenheimer, was the guest. The video should be up on Comedy Central's website soon.

What does everyone think of sports docs? Specifically ESPN's 30 for 30 films. Here's a few of those I like quite a bit:

The Best That Never Was

Pony Excess

Little Big Men

Winning Time: Miller vs. The Knicks

I'd love to hear a sports-centric episode of Documentality.

Re: Documentality #1 - Foreword

I love Sports Doc's and I think ESPN does some great work.  My buddy Royce Directed the Run Rickey Run doc.  I like the Bo Jackson one, and I cannot WAIT for the Eddie Aikau one coming out soon.  We'll probably do Dogtown and Z Boys at some point.  Also, I was filming Life in the Cage the same time they were filming The Smashing Machine, so I wouldn't mind doing that at some point.

Yup, I like Bo Knows Bo & Run Rickey Run, too. Looking forward to hearing the episode with Dogtown and Z Boys.

Catching Hell is another one that was really well done, but makes me mad to watch people act like such imbeciles over a game. That Doc really captures so much of the ugly side pf sports.

And you got me interested in Eddie Aikau's story.

Re: Documentality #1 - Foreword

Catching Hell was great.  Hoop Dreams is sort of the gold standard of Sports Docs, but there was also that one that won the Oscar two years ago.  Can't remember the name of it.

Re: Documentality #1 - Foreword

EPSN does some great documentaries. I was honestly surprised by how enjoyable and in depth they go with their material. Not saying they don't do quality work, but it was a level I was not expecting. Be great to hear your thoughts on them

God loves you!
