Ooh, ooh! Do Close Encounters!
And yet even with a hardcore porn version out there, no one's fucked Alice in Wonderland harder than Tim Burton did.

I appreciate not being lumped into this crowd.
I'm in a Serenity annoyance league all my own, HaHA!
Well, Teague knows I only do it cause I love him.
I just watched Burton's "Alice" yesterday, coincidentally … and god, what a mess that was. The lead actress was charismatic as all hell, but even she couldn't save it.
Well....I enjoyed it.
But then I only saw it once when it came out, and haven't even thought about it since...so yeah. Maybe I'm not the best metric.
With a film like Burton's ALICE it probably depends a lot on what you go in expecting. I avoided it myself, which lets you know what I expect from it
I wanted to enjoy it, I really did. But I found the plot damn near impenetrable, due in no small part to the dialogue mix. I had to watch big chunks of it with the subtitles on, especially when Depp was on screen.
Once I got it, I realized that it was an extremely clumsy pastiche of the Alice stories that borrowed its plot — such as it was — from a piece of purposeful nonce.
It reminded me of nothing more than the Sci Fi channel's recent riff on the Wizard of Oz called "Tinman," except that story at least had characters with motivations. And Kathleen Robertson's captivating décolletage.

Well I guess that makes sense, I went in expecting nothing more than Burtons usual creepy undertones, a series of nonsensical events with only the faintest hint of a through line reminiscent of the source material, and the trademark nonsensical style that personifies Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
And that's what it was.

I also enjoyed Tinman...such as it was.

TIN MAN was awful. I wanted to like it, and I liked the idea, but it insulted the audience's intelligence at every turn.
Like, they'd do a cool subtle thing like have the so-called "Tin Man" of the title be a right asshole, and we're watching going "Oh, he's heartless, I get it. Nice." But then the next thing out of Zooey Deschanel's vapid mouth would be "Have a heart, Tin Man."
I kept expecting the director to stick his baseball-capped head into frame and going "Did you all catch what we did there? Yes? Are you sure? We'll do it again, just in case."
Yeah like I said...such as it was.
Just out of curiosity, Mike, do you think anything is merely okay? Or does everything either suck or rule in your world?
He seems pretty neutral on the subject of homeopathy.
If I find something merely okay, that means I don't have much of an opinion about it either way. So I'm unlikely to bring it up since all I think of it is "meh." Why would I spend much time thinking about things that don't excite or interest me -- for good or ill?
EDIT: FUCK HOMEOPATHY GRAAAAAAAAHHHHH
I was mistaken.

Yeah... my sister loved it, so I gave it a look... it's clearly aimed at those who only know the 1939 film and have little experience with how others have "updated" classics. Which includes my sister, although she's more educated then me in many areas There's just so much from the books you can play with, and all we got were some short people in the beginning...
Even though October is drawing to a close, I've dug up a few to toss around for next year.
Frailty
Ginger Snaps
Maniac
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Bug
These are on my "to watch" list, so while I can't vouch for them personally, I've heard enough to be intrigued.
"Bug" is a really interesting movie. It's one of the few I know that made the jump from stage play to film while staying extremely faithful to the source material.
It's probably not what you think, though.
So wait...Bug doesn't have anything to do with an entomologist turned sociopath? Damn. Well, dibs on that idea in case no one's done it yet.
The trick is to have it be faithful while not seeming like they just filmed the stage version (I enjoy filmed stage performances, but those aren't "movies").

The Producers, your thoughts? Yay or nay?
A little stagey, but do not care, love.
That's how I feel about the film version of Rent. But replace "but do not care, love" with "and that's just one of the many reasons why I fucking loathe it".
There are stage shows that take such advantage of the medium that any "opening up" of them sort of ruin it. Others were probably compromised being confined to a stage in the first place and are probably the easiest to adapt.
THE PRODUCERS is suffocatingly stagey and I don't care for it. But I also don't care for it as a musical, so it's not like they ruined a great opportunity in my book.
RENT, on the other hand. Oh, what a waste. Chris Columbus is mediocrity incarnate. As with pretty much all his films, it wasn't bad and it wasn't good. It was just right down the middle -- no risk, no passion, no energy, playing it totally safe and standard. Which I'm sure is exactly why the studio hired him (and just keeps hiring him) but it's also exactly the opposite of the whole point of the show.
