This discussion is getting pretty involved for what is off topic.
Maybe we should have a separate thread for "bitch and talk about movies we haven't done yet?"
But, suffice it to say, Jeffrey sums it all up pretty nicely. There's a couple other things that piss me off, like how time travel suddenly works differently than it ever has before in Trek, but you've got most of it.
You're absolutely right, Brian. Sorry about that. I would vote in favor of moving my apparent manifesto to some other forum thread, if there's a better place to put it.
If I may use my first post to suggest a movie? Yeah? Sure? Okay.
Snatch, by Guy Ritchie. It's British. It's smart. It's violent. It has a plot. Plus there's more than one moment where I've broken down laughing.
I can recite most of the lines by heart and it would be wicked for you guys to a bit.
We talked about it in the Jedi Council thread but Sunshine and Moon would be great.
In no particular order of preference:
- Top Gun (perhaps discuss how the homoeroticism has been completely overblown? Sometimes a wingman is just a wingman)
- Predator (love to hear Trey's thoughts on the predator effects, the film's impact etc.)
- Contact (again! Can Brian talk about Sagan?)
- The 13th Warrior (I think one of the crew said they liked this? Occasionally inspired but flawed. Does McTiernan have a style?)
- Chronicles of Riddick (what went wrong if anything? Perhaps Pitch Black would have to be done before)
- Crimson Tide (Are the Scott brothers distinct?Which one is more consistent? Submarine cliches)
- Last Action Hero (a loving send-up of the action genre, misunderstood genius?)
I remember disliking Snatch, I'd have to see it again. Also, welcome to the forum!
Top Gun is a maybe, haven't seen Predator but we have an excellent potential guest for that one. Contact absolutely. Haven't seen 13th Warrior, Riddick, or Crimson Tide. I think we're gonna get to Last Action Hero eventually; I was really disappointed in that movie and it's one of Trey's favorites.
"Chronicles of Riddick" is worth watching, if nothing else just for the overall look of it. Also, there's an homage at the very end that I won't give away but that's kind of delightful.
I found it pretty disappointing after "Pitch Black," though. I didn't hate it or anything, but it wasn't what I was hoping for.
Do an Abbot and Costello movie to get some old school in there.
I'd like to toss out the suggestion of "Six String Samurai". Another podcast I won't name tried it and brought no game, but it would be interesting to hear your take on a low budget indie. Also maybe an old school sci fi anime, such as "Akira" or "Nausicaa".
I'm just heartbroken to learn that y'all did "A.I." a long time back. I could go on for days about why that movie is a masterpiece. Listening to you guys badmouth it would have sent me into fits of delicious rage and inspired forum posts that would have made you all roll your eyes so hard you'd hear the gristle pop.
Something I should have mentioned in the anniversary "what did we learn?" discussion - it didn't occurr to me at the time - was that we started with the assumption that fewer people would be interested in a commentary if it was a movie they probably didn't own and therefore couldn't watch while listening. So for the most part we've stayed with recent blockbusters as our source material.
Now that we know that watching (or even previously SEEING) the video in question doesn't seem to be as much of an issue, we may indeed start doing older and/or more obscure films. We all can name films that we wish more people would see... or classics that we just can't understand why they're supposedly so great, etc. I'm hoping we'll do more of that sort of thing in our *ahem* second year.
I'm all for that, Trey. I've listened to a lot of Down-in-fronts on the train, or walking to the shops. With few exceptions, it's less like listening to a commentary sans movie and more like listening to four bright guys talk about a movie I've seen.
And now that I've said "with few exceptions" I feel morally obligated to name at least one, but I'm drawing a blank.
I certainly make an effort to watch along with my listening, but I can't say that I've done that for more than a fourth of the shows.
Certainly if I haven't seen a movie yet, I'll listen to the commentary without watching, and if the commentary makes me interested to see it, I'll watch it without the commentary.
The odd instance has been with 2001, where I first listened to the commentary, and then listened to it again while watching the movie, and then went back and watched portions of the movie again without commentary.
Similar to Rifftrax, I often only rent a film because you guys have done a commentary. So long as it is in fact possible to rent the sucker (or at least "find" it), don't let that hold you back. Speaking of which, the three 90's Gamera movies would make good episodes ![]()
(Someone did fun iRiffs of them despite the second film now being very hard to find and not being on Netflix)
Commentary Track suggestions:
The Dark Knight - What do you guys think of Heath Ledger's performance, the very plot convenient cell phone city wide sonar. and Christian Bale's Batman voice. I love this movie, but I think there's more weak elements in the movie than people care to admit.
Stardust - Just because I really like that movie.
Wanted - I liked it, but never read the comic book. I know people like to rip on it; so I would like to watch it with you guys and see what you think.
How about a commentary on the Dr. Horrible series?
Now I don't really see you guys doing a serious movie, but how about Man on Fire or The Blind Side or somethin like that
Man on Fire is awesome, but is The Blind Side even out?
And if you want serious I say do The Shining, not only is it awesome and serious, it's also kinda hilarious at points and awesome to watch a little out-of-it.
Or Letters to Iwo Jima?
And I think Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a must do.
