It must be a sign of insecurity to assume the movie is smarter than you, rather than they just didn't know what they were doing. The dazzling production values (like Inception) give the illusion that its very sophisticated, and  a sprinkling of references to 'deep topics' is sufficient to pass for profundity.

Laying aside Prometheus's various problems (which left me merely disappointed, instead of angry) and focusing on this, it's no bad thing for a film to ask questions it doesn't answer in order to make you think. It is a bad thing when the film doesn't answer any, especially the central question that motivates the plot—who made us and why?

Well, we know who the movie says made us, and the 'why' part I'm fine with not having an answer, or getting only vague ones. People ask that question all the time. It's the other 5,000 questions in the movie that bother me.

Same here.   Religious people give their gods a pass all the time "God moves in mysterious ways", etc.   Even in the secular world, "Act of God" is a legal term meaning something that no one could foresee or prevent - and it's usually something awful.   I'm not a religious person, but I'm of the opinion that if you really could ask your "creator" what the deal is, you might well get an answer you won't like, or even understand.

For me, the movie dealt with that whole issue in the brief exchange with David about why humans created androids and he gets told "Because we could."   That's what I think the movie wanted to be about, maybe in some former draft.  Almost all of the characters wanted to meet their Maker because of some personal goal  - enlightenment, knowledge, profit, immortality... and watching a variety of interesting characters go about seeking those different goals is a perfectly workable frame to hang a movie on.

Except... they all went about it by doing a lot of silly unmotivated things, and meanwhile there wasn't a single branch of science that didn't get misused and mangled, which was painful.   And in the end, the one character who seemed to have learned something ("We were SO WRONG") then sets out to do the same thing again.   Ptui.

If there's any common theme to the Alien series, it's "leave that thing alone and go home".   There's a character in each movie who says something close to that, and they're always right.  smile    In Prometheus, Geologist Soccer Hooligan Hudson says it, and he's right... but then everything he does after that is inexplicably stupid, just like every other character.    Double ptui.

Re: Prometheus

All those people that watch the History Channel's Ancient Aliens series will love it.

Then there's this stoopid 'Space Jesus' theory kicking around.

Just like Lucas said 'the prequels aren't for you, they're for kids', maybe it's a case of Prometheus isn't for sci-fi nerds, it's for flakey conspiracy theorists.

And Lindelhof is blaming Ridley Scott for the ambiguities, to deflect all the hate away from him.

not long to go now...

Whatever anyone thinks of Prometheus, I'm looking forward to the BTS and commentary on the DVD.

Re: Prometheus

I thought it was ok, being aware of the flaws and it's lack of answers I suppose may have prepared me, but I think I might actually have liked it.

The one thing that really irritated me was the biologist being completely unaware of the danger of the worm-alien. There are way too many animals on our planet that increase their size as a defence or as part of an attack. Speaking of the worms, did these come from the Prometheus and just happened to get on David's boot?

Also, remember that scene in Aliens when all the characters get together to discuss what's going on and together come up with a theory, working it out based on what they have learned? This film needed that scene, and not one of the Captain magically coming up with a theory which is essentially taken as fact.

Re: Prometheus

My nephew is coming to visit in a few weks and he has never seen a single Alien film.  So we are planning a little film fest and will watch Alien, Aliens, and (if he still insists) Prometheus.  Unrelatedly, he has also just finished watchnig Firefly, so the 4th film during that visit will be Serenity.  Even if I hate Prometheus, it's going to be a fun weekend!
