Re: Godzilla (2012)

It didn't in the first few Godzilla movies where he fought other monsters. As for your fear, only one Godzilla film has really been serious and poignant (the first). I could almost argue that a movie that took that tact should use a different monster.

So is there more than one monster planned in this film? I'm not sure 'Godzilla fights other monsters' bodes well for a serious and poignant story. Wouldn't that essentially turn Godzilla into a protagonist?

Hasn't Godzilla already turned in to a protagonist? I mean, maybe a lesser of two evils but the movies now seem to treat it a little more positively...  hmm

Re: Godzilla (2012)

Yeah, there will be other monsters but Godzilla himself is not heroic. It'll be more like Jurassic Park style fights.

That fits in with the whole "Godzilla-as-force-of-nature" idea that the director keeps mentioning. It'll be that scene from Pacific Rim with all the people running to the bunker...but a whole movie where we get to know those characters.

Wait, isn't that basically Cloverfield?

Yeah, except Cloverfield didn't have Walter fucking White.

Well when Mr. Walter loves Ms. White, they fuck like jackrabbits on a cold winter night.

It's the circle of life.

Took a bit of finaggling to see what you were trying to say.

But I would not be opposed to see that particular film.

That POV shot of them breaking through the clouds and seeing him is fucking awesome.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

Now THAT'S how you tease a movie. Brief glimpses of characters, almost no spoiling of major setpieces, and a hazy but recognizable glimpse of the iconic monster.

I looks like this film will bring the element of horror back to Godzilla. It isn't focused on spectacle or fun as much as it's focused on scaring the shit out of you. I love that.

Yeah, I read an interview with Edwards yesterday and this quote should sell the movie to anyone:

It's Godzilla's name on the marquee, yet Edwards didn't want to humanize him or give him too much personality.

"To me, he's like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we've behaved," Edwards says. "If this really happened, it would be like Sept. 11.

"I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up."

Just like Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, Hobbit, etc were.

Best to dial the expectations way down, and just maybe it won't be a turd.

Out of those three Man of Steel was the only trailer I thought was very impressive. Didn't like the movie at all.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

Cool looking trailer, but why are a few marines being dropped into a city to combat a skyscraper-high monster? Looks like a computer game scenario, but have we forgotten about our artillery, missiles, nukes, etc again. Is it all about [deep trailer voice] 'in a world gone mad, one man stands alone'

Read Doctor Submarine's post. I don't want to know until I see the movie and the trailer did a superb job of giving a couple of hints without any major details of the plot logistics. I assume it has something to do with not wanting to turn San Francisco into a nuclear wasteland for the next thousand years.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

The Starship Troopers solution. Use an AA12 to blast a hole into Godzilla's skin and drop a few grenades inside. Then crack open a cold beer while watching the fireworks, wipe the sweat from your brow, turn to camera and say 'America. Back in the saddle'.

not long to go now...

I want to believe there's a perfect good reason for that. Let me believe, dammit! smile

Doing some rough fake math in my head, that ballistic would be roughly the size of a BB..maaaybe a paintball to Godzilla.

I mean just thinking it through, anything big enough to just brute force take him out (nukes, bombing the SHIT out of New York or whatever it takes) could only lead to Pyrrhic victory. It would decimate everything. I "think" (hope) what he's going for with the drop team is more of a strike team thing that can slip in unnoticed get close enough to Godzilla to inflict some sort of damage to take him out.

But then for all we know, the drop team could be the 5 minute cold open at the beginning that all get squashed like mosquitoes out of mid air.

It's a damn cool visual though whatever it ends up being for.
