Re: Suggest a movie!

We recorded one for The Frighteners, but as spoken of in the anniversary show, it exploded and we need to do it again. Moon we will do in the next few months. Hitchhiker's is also a candidate in the next-few-months category.

And welcome to the forum! Party alongside us.

Speaking of Les Grossman (and fans of the Hangover)

Hangover was terrible. Aside from Zack Galifinakis, I don't know why people found it funny.

The original spec script of Hangover, on the other hand, is one of the best comedies I've ever read. But they butchered it beyond recognition on its way to the screen. A good example of how more resources can actually hurt a film. That movie didn't need Mike Tyson in it. The script didn't have Mike Tyson in it. But when they went to film in Vegas someone told them "Hey, we can get you Mike Tyson." So they tore out 10 random pages of the script and wrote Mike Tyson in. Original script had no tiger, no baby, no run-in with the cops, and it was funnier and had more heart than that junkpile all these people now list as their favorite comedy on Facebook.

If only they knew.

I just re-watched Beetlejuice and I'd be up for that one. It's reasonably solid and enjoyable, but definitely flawed in ways worth talking about. And we haven't done a Burton yet. Unless you count Nightmare. Which you shouldn't.

By the way, happy to report that The Sandlot is still amazingly good.

Damn, am I happy to hear that. I think about that movie way more than I should for something I haven't seen in like ten years. Does it work as a movie for adults too?

It lives on the same emotional plane for me as 3 Ninjas, which upon a relatively recent viewing was awesome for terrible reasons.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Yeah, I didn't clearly remember this, but it's actually a story from an adult's perspective looking back fondly on his perspective as a kid. Just a good movie.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Just as good as The Mighty Ducks.

And Dorkman, I completely agree with you. The only thing I found funny/appealing from the Hangover was the rapport between the characters. I am interested to know where I can read this spec-script?

I really liked Altered States. Not sure what there is to say about it, though.

Re: Suggest a movie!

thought of a couple more

-Either Bill and Ted movie (excellent Adventure or Bogus Journey)

- Toys, one of Robin Williams more weirder flms but still like it to some degree. I don't think it did that well or was well recieved.

- UHF, not sure what could be said but it's a fun movie IMO

Re: Suggest a movie!

I didn't much like Tropic Thunder. The fake trailers at the beginning were quite funny but then it sorts of stumbles and then goes downhill from there. My main problem is its forgettable and derivative story. It never comes together as a cohesive whole and suffers from being all over the place tonally, with about half a dozen different types of humour being thrown into the mix.

Also, I don't like Ben Stiller that much. He's played so many unlikeable characters in his career, it's made me dislike him as a person. I remembered first seeing him in that episode of Friends, and surprise, he was a jerk in that. His best work was Night at the Museum (that perhaps you guys could do someday) and that was because he wasn't trying to be the comedian (though he comes close to spoiling what is a great movie several times).

Redxavier please rate these following Ben Stiller movies/performances from your favorite to least favorite, so to better learn your hatred for Ben:

The Royal Tenenbaums

Zoolander

There's Something About Mary

Dodgeball

Mystery Men

...or not, whatever, I know Jeff or Fig someone else will do it too, so I don't need you!

Re: Suggest a movie!

A few years ago I took a two-day business trip to Sydney, Australia. It's a fifteen-hour non-stop flight from LAX. They showed five in-flight movies, and Zoolander was one of them.

Twenty minutes into it I took the rental headphones off and chose to stare at the back of the seat in front of me instead.

This is an absolutely true story.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I like Stiller ok but it depends on what movie he's in. I like Tenenbaums a lot but Tropic Thunder is a little more uneven. He does kind of always play the same guy though.

I don't think him playing unlikable characters is a good reason to dislike him. I watched Michael Clayton again recently and it's amazing how far they go to make Tilda Swinton's character unlikable but she does a great job so i have to admire her as an actress. I have no idea what she's like as a person.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Yeah I could care less how people act in the "real life". Case and point I am a big Tom Cruise fan, even tho everyone calls him batshit crazy.

Re: Suggest a movie!

To be clear, my dislike of Ben Stiller is a combination of his unlikeable characters, comedy style and real life persona from interviews and the like. He once presented at a Star Trek anniversay show and even then, waxing lyrical about his love of the original show, he came across as a bit of a dick. Since I see little difference from Ben Stiller and his characters, I don't believe he's a good actor.

Favourite to least favourite
Dodgeball
The Royal Tenenbaums
There's Something About Mary
Zoolander
Mystery Men

Also, I don't hate him or anything. I just wouldn't rush out to see a film just because he's in it.

That's fascinating.  Why does a persons build matter in respect to their ability to make ha-ha's?

have you not seen Big Momma's House or various Eddie Murphy flicks?  fat suit = funny

Sorry dude, but your theory is complete bunk...you wanna know, how I know?

Jim....Carey.

And the fact that any movie with Eddie Murphy in a fat suit, isn't really all that funny.

Although doesn't dissuade Dane Cook being an unfunny hack.

Rollerball (75). The whole corporations-run-the-world thing, man of few words James Caan can't trust anyone, those pampered people who go nuts at the slightest bit of violence, etc. Might make a good DiF.

Damn, just thought of another good one: To Live and Die in L.A. Willem Dafoe is great, William Petersen plays a super-cocky guy that i should hate but he's great too. The car on a turntable thing in the car chase is stupid but otherwise a great movie with a crazy ending.
