Phantom of the Paradise is a movie I've been meaning to check out for a while. Do it so I have an excuse to watch it!
Also way to not mention Suspiria in the Jessica Harper chat. (Like 70s cult horror films ever come up on the show)
Teague, don't sound so surprised that Rick & Morty is very three-acty! Dan Harmon is OBSESSED with story structure, and mentions Joseph Campbell on the regular during his Harmontown podcast, and he wrote some neat little guides to structure on the Channel 101 wiki.
And yeah, Rick and Morty is excellent. I had high hopes, 'cause I am a huge fan of Harmon as a creator and a person, and I'm also fond of Justin Roiland (who did some Channel 101 stuff, and did the hilarious Grandma's Virginity Podcast with Ryan Ridley). Ah hell, look at me, ah lost mah train o' thought there. Aaaaanyway, have you played Rick and Morty's Rushed Licensed Adventure? It's a flash point-and-click kinda thing but the sense of humour is spot-on, and equally silly and charming.
Post-script: I hadn't intended this to be so linky, but, here we are.
Re: the "do you believe in god" scene in GHOSTBUSTERS -- as I recall from the official commentaries, that was inserted where it is to bring Ray and Winston back into the story a bit, and also explain where they've been while most of the movie went down -- because up to that point they've both been missing since the Twinkie conversation, before the terror dog took Dana, and don't show up again until they pull up to the blown-out headquarters. It also serves, as the guys pointed out, as a tonal transition for the film to emphasize the potentially serious implications of what they do, as well as a literal transition from night to day to get us into the Walter Peck scene.
It's actually appropriate you should mention the ghostbeej straight after -- it was part of a much longer sequence where Ray and Winston spend the night at an old maritime museum (or something) and Ray falls asleep on the bed after having played dress-up with some of the clothing (which is why he's wearing the admiral's jacket in the scene). It killed the pace and so they dropped it, minus the bit they retained for the montage. The "do you believe in god" conversation was originally them coming back from that bust.

Re: Adventure Time
Man I wanted to like it. It's so colorful and has interesting animation. If it wasn't so not fun to watch.... I got to give it credit for doing its thing and not caring AT ALL if you're on board or not, but ugh.
Teague, on cartoons: Avatar The Last Airbender. It becomes elemental, martial arts Star Wars over the course of the show.
/shoves show in everyone's face until they cave in despite it being a "children's" show

By the way, according to the Blu-Ray.com review, the SORCERER release in fact has pretty much no special features. PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, however, has them coming out of all available orifices. On Trey's recommendation (and he's also not the first to bang the SORCERER drum), I took a chance and just blind-bought them both.
Sorcerer is fucking awesome, you won't be disappointed. It's like Apocalypse Now's less-well-known cousin in the "70s filmmakers with massive balls filming crazy sequences in the jungle" genre.
Phantom of the Paradise I clearly need to see based on this discussion, as I haven't seen much early De Palma.
I blind bought Sorcerer a few months back and wasn't disappointed. I've seen it twice now and probably don't need to see it again, but goddamn - it's the kind of movie you watch and go, "how did no one die making this movie?"
Oh, and speaking of SyFy/Asylum's ZNation, one-off "friend of the show" Anastasia Baranova stars in it. Haven't watched it yet, but am excited to see her getting work.
BTW Teague, thanks for suggesting Rick and Morty, it's absolutely fantastic. It's like all the best "crazy" episodes of Community spun off into it's own show, really great writing, and like you said, adheres to the 3-act setup/payoff structure.
So, I just powered through this episode right before work and it was really fun. Looking forward to watching "Phantom of Paradise" and then listening to you guys talk about it, so thank you Trey.
Given all that has happened, this was a lot of fun. Thanks guys!
I watched "Phantom of the Paradise" the other night and holy shit that movie is amazing stuff. Hope you guys get to it eventually.
