Re: Intermission 022 - The Ark Story!

Good old Canadian Content rules... The CRTC actually decided a few years ago that the internet is exempt (thank goodness) because there isn't a limited amount of internet "broadcast space". They also recently ruled that ISPs don't have to fund Canadian artists like traditional broadcasters do because ISPs have no control over what they're "broadcasting". Despite what the lobbyists here claimed would happen, the sky has not fallen and there are statistics indicating that, for example, YouTube has more than its share of "Canadian content" without encouragement. Amazing roll

As for Hulu, I think it has more to do with renegotiating all the distribution licences, as we have our own set of distributors up here [Citation]. Pandora and Spotify aren't here yet at all and Netflix streaming exists here but has a far far more limited selection.

Loved this episode. Really informative as well as funny and totally endearing. Thanks guys and special thanks to Trey of course. I'm definitely interested in seeing Ark now, and have recently taken advantage of your generous private YouTube posting.

I wonder, could we hear similar stories in the future from the rest of DiF, e.g. Dorkman on the RvsD shorts and Eddie on One More Round (when that finishes)?

Re: Intermission 022 - The Ark Story!

This fit perfectly with my train back from my shoot in London last night, really enjoyed it. I must admit to not reckonising the writers names in the credits and thinking "Oh so Trey didn't write it, who are those guys?!"  lol

It was a really interesting process making Arc rather then "we decided to make Pink Five, then we made Pink Five and then there was Pink Five"

Also I loved Teague's description of guerilla filmmaking as being anything you can cut corners on set and finish up later.

We're not aware that other countries HAVE tv, except Doctor Who which is shot on location in United British Kingdomland, near France.

Amazingly, part of the most recent season was filmed on location in United American Statusland, near Canadia.

I'll be waiting for Ark here in Finland..

Funny you should mention.  If we get to do more Ark, I'm planning to have part of it take place in Finland.  If the budget allows, I'm hoping we can shoot there, at least a little bit.    (Not to give too much away, but the Ark story involves something I'm calling The Second Winter War. wink)

Anyway, for anyone that missed this in the other Ark thread, I'll recap:

Trey wrote:

the relatively tiny number of participants in this forum won't damage the market value of Ark if you should happen to see it.  So I've thrown the switches on the episodes at YouTube from Private to Unlisted, which means they are now viewable if you know the link.

And (how's this for a switch!) they're blocked in the U.S. - you U.S. viewers can just keep on going to Hulu, where you will watch those Geico commercials and give thanks for them, as I do.

This is an honor-system thing, if the hit counts start going suspiciously higher than the approximate number of overseas members of this forum, I'll re-Private the videos.  So no sharing, no leaking, and by the way, they're un-embeddable.

If you agree to the above, then feel free to click this link.

And for those who are interested, here's one of the "special feature" videos from our Ark screener DVD - a comparison of three scenes with and without FX.  Same rules apply as above, except this clip can be seen in the US.  No sharing outside the forum, please.

The following contains spoilers, obviously - so if that's a concern then go watch the actual episodes before proceeding.

Re: Intermission 022 - The Ark Story!

Btw, Trey, you know someone already ripped off Ark, right? The movie "Pandorum"

Re: Intermission 022 - The Ark Story!

I think Pandorum came out before Ark, though I could be mistaken.

Funnily enough, I randomly stumbled on this crowd-sourcing project, which also sounds an awful lot like arc: http://www.indiegogo.com/stasys-series?c=home

Edit: Actually, this project sounds pretty fucking awesome, the guy was Effects Supervisor on BSG and Iron Sky

Pandorum went into production months after we shot Ark, but was released long before Ark finally made it to Hulu.

When I was offered Ark, I was reluctant partly because "giant sleeper ship where something goes wrong" was already a fairly tired trope (and that was before I'd even heard of Pandorum).  I asked if we could at least change the title, since part of the trope is that the ship is almost always called "the Ark", but obviously I didn't win that battle.

But at least in the "what happens next?" series bible that I wrote, in case we ever get to continue the story, I made two things clear:  the ship is not called "the Ark", and - for the most part - nothing has gone wrong.   The problem is that the characters don't know what's going on, and will have to figure it out.
