Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I'd like to hear episodes about specific directors, actors, producers, etc.  I love when you guys talk about Kubrick and people interpreting everything in his movies as deliberate.  I wouldn't mind hearing similar discussions about Spielberg or whomever.

I'll add that one of the things I love about the podcasts are the discussions that include science, skepticism and rationalism.  Episodes concerning those topics would be great (I think that you guys have earned the right to transcend the category of "just movie talk").  I'm not talking about political beliefs.  I think that what each of you does for a living is founded on scientific principles and I appreciate that you guys don't disregard those principles just because "it's a movie, who cares".  For example Trey explaining to the crew working on Starship Troopers how gravity works and that they can't simply disregard it.

I like the idea of discussing particular folks... hm.

You know, ever since I saw that someone with the username "HabeasPorpoise" had joined the forums, I've been on pins and needles waiting for a first post. You, sir, did not disappoint. Welcome!

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

In the past two Intermissions, you guys have referenced the "Bake-Off" when talking about Special Effects awards. Would there be enough content there to discuss for an episode?

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

Yeah, probably...though I think we discussed that at length in the first anniversary show.

EDIT: Yep! 58:54-1:07:57 during the 1st anniversary show is Trey going into that process and the movies for 2010, which isn't exactly timely, but it's something to tide you over in the meantime. smile

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

bake-off season is coming up again right now, though - might be well worth an intermission to discuss this year's entries when the time comes.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I think some things that were a bit too long for the anniversary shows, like the best picture nom reviews and the bake off review are ideal intermission material.

Might I suggest an intermission on SOPA? Is the Stop Online Piracy Act really inevitably going to kill the internet and ruin the lives of millions of young people who would be sued for said acts piracy and put millions of dollars in debt?

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

Listening to the BTTF comm, I have an idea.  Instead of doing comms for certain films, why not just devote an Intermission on them? For example, if you don't want to do the rest of the Star Trek films or the other two BTTF films or any other sequels you have yet to do just talk about them for half an hour. Of course, this may alienate people who only listen to the Intermission (who does that?) but it may cause folk to listen to a commentary they may not have listened to already. Than again, I may just be talking out of my arse. Or typing out of my arse....nah, that doesn't work as well.

Not a great idea, granted but it would save you time on doing all the Star Trek films especially.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

While listening to one of the Anniversary shows recently, one of you proposed an episode covering This Movie Is Not Yet Rated (a great doc looking into the MPAA). Has that been shelved, and if so - perhaps the subject fits best for an Intermission episode. There's certainly plenty to discuss, from the process itself to the accusations of corruption.

Great idea, Mushroomer!

I Love This Film is Not Yet Rated and I'd love to hear these guys talk about the MPAA.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

Been a fan of intermission and since you already have an idea what you're going to discuss during live shows, I'm going to go head and post up some of the ideas here.

1)  Things that hurt/killed a film/tv series.
2)  Are there movies/shows that you saw when you were younger and enjoyed/hate them but opinion has changed now that you're older?
3)  Could a rating for a film hurt/help a movie?
4)  Memorable cliffhangers and/or series finalies.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

An episode on video game adaptations could be a good idea; why they tend to fail and what you would have to do to make them work. You could pick a particular game or series of games and workshop how to make it work as a movie (my suggestion being, The Legend of Zelda series).

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

How different would it be to write up a series finale for a tv show if you're told about midway through that season to when you know that you have another complete season to "wrap things up"?

What is more difficult:  A reasonably new director getting their first shot at doing a "big time" movie or a director steping into a film series that has been very popular and has gained that film studio a lot of money?

What are some possible diffculties when you have to wrap things up for a long running series weather it's tv or movies?

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I watched The Hurt Locker for the first time today and followed it up listening to the DIF commentary and a lot of the things you guys said towards the end really hit the nail on the head for me, in terms of how you feel about the movie when comparing it to other Best Picture winners. I think the idea of how your opinion on a movie can change (due to hype, acclaim, etc) could make for a good Intermission episode.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

How about an Intermission on rules for filmmakers to stop the madness with CGI. Like, no fully CGI characters fighting other fully CGI characters; no fully CGI sets; no CGI humans, etc. Where do the limits lie? Call it "There Oughta Be a Law!"

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I’ve just listened to Professor Sir Christopher Frayling’s commentary on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and out of the dozens of OFFICIAL commentary tracks I’ve heard, it’s got to be one of the best. Have you heard it?
As the biographer of Sergio Leone, he relates hundreds of interesting behind-the-scenes info on the making of all those great Spaghetti Westerns. I’d hold that up as THE template by which informative film commentaries should look up to.
But it’s not as fun as what you guys do. And I hope that one day, a studio picks up DIF for an additional commentary track to stick on a DVD or Blu-Ray, either for a new release or an old restored classic.

So the idea of an Intermission episode relating to what you guys do… commentary tracks, struck me as worth listening to.

1.    What are the best commentary tracks you guys have heard?
2.    Who are the directors you like to hear speak (Fincher, Scott, Cameron, Jackson?)
3.    Who are the directors you WOULD LIKE to hear speak but won’t (Spielberg?) or can’t (because they’re dead e.g. Kubrick).
4.    Any other non-director commentaries you like (actors, crew, film critics, historians, etc)
5.    What are your favourite fan commentaries (Rifftrax, Red Letter Media, etc?)
6.    What are some waste-of-time commentary tracks?

I haven’t heard all your commentaries but of the 30-40 I have heard, I would nominate The Abyss as one of DIF’s best due to the insider knowledge and highlighting the enormous effort that went into that oft-overlooked film.

So there you go – just an idea – an INTERMISSION on audio commentaries.

Cheers from London

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I've got two more ideas when it comes to do for a possible future intermission.  The ideas are:

TV Movie - It can cover the overall thing.  Standalone ones, ones that are based of off of a show/video game/book/etc. and ones that are done as a possible backdoor pilot for a possible show.

Mini Series - What could be the advantages and disadvantages in doing a series that'll run for a  predetermined amount of time?  Another part can be what kind of genre that works better in the mini series format.

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

I also endorse the MPAA intermission discussion. Why has censorship become more prudish when it comes to nudity but less when it comes to violence? Kiss a breast and it's R, but run it through with a sword and it's only PG13. WTF?

Re: Suggest an Intermission!

How about an Intermission on Awards

Are there too many award shows?
Are there too many or too few categories? e.g. What's with the Best Song?
Why is the acting category segregated out between men and women? We don't do that for directing or composing or any other category. We don't have old/young black/white first timers/veteran categories for acting. Why can't women compete equally with men in acting just like any other category? It's not sports.
Are the Oscars rigged? How much politics is involved?
Greatest snubbs? Hurt Locker over Avatar, Paltrow over Blanchett, etc
Greatest undeserved Oscars? e.g. for retrospective roles, as in 'it was his turn'
Is it fair what in some years it's a weak field and some years it's a strong field?
Should there be awards for fan commentaries?  smile
