Let us all LOOK GOD IN THE EYE.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

I'm gonna do a side by side of their testimony, but I'm not kitted out for that this second if anyone wants to beat me to it.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

Didn't get fuckall done at work cuz I kept checking Twitter to follow the proceedings. I feel like I'm just completely burned out on anger at this point; all I can manage is disgust and resignation.

The worst thing is that Kavanaugh is still gonna end up on the Court. I don't trust the swing-vote Republicans as far as I can throw them. We'll just have to hope it inspires enough anger to pummel the GOP come midterms—the Democrats sure as hell aren't gonna win those on their own.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

Probably lucky that I was in super-important work meetings basically all day yesterday, but from what I've seen of the summary/overview...jesus.  Having grown up in the DC area, anybody who went to Georgetown Prep is automatically an asshole until proven otherwise, but this guy really seems like a Major League bellend.

Also helps being all out of tears because of the fucked-up clown car crash that my adopted country is at the moment.

For the next hour, everything in this post is strictly based on the available facts.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

I don't even know what to think. I only caught a summary from NBC Nightly's morning-info-dump podcast, but I heard parts of Dr Ford's testimony, and I'm certainly inclined to believe her. Having heard Kavanaugh's response, I feel like I just suck at reading people. He seems sincere, she seems sincere.

The thing is, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if Kavanaugh was guilty. It certainly sounds like a thing that could have happened without consequences for him back then. He probably did it, but I'm neither a fan of emotional verdicts nor confident in my ability to tell who's being honest hmm

Long story short, I'm glad I don't have to make this decision.
As a conservative, I'd honestly like to see an actual conservative nominee, but this guy is already too poisoned to be any good in that dept. Fact is, current "conservatives" are mostly moral reprobates who I despise, because they're horrible people who merely pretend to be godly. And then there's our president, so help me..... Burn 'em all.

EDIT:
And I just read his explanations for the 'totes-not-sexual!' references in his yearbook....yeah, no, this guy's a dirtbag. Obviously kids write stupid shit to be funny, but the fact he's lying about what they mean? Pfffft.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

I got called by a political pollster last night... that was fun.
Favorite question-
Pollster: Republican or Democrat?
Me: *deep inhale* unaffiliated independent moderate liberal that’s frustrated with both parties and the party system
*pause*
Pollster: ... alright...

I'm with this guy. (Not sure about 'liberal' — just 'cuz there are various definitions.)

Fun fact I've never shared: I'm rather quite deep into a constitutional-theory book I plan to write about this topic.

The video of him being confronted in the elevator is flipping intense. You can just see the shame oozing out of every pore on his body.

Those women are fucking heroes. They're Neil Armstrong. They're historic. Standing in the door of the elevator.

Heck darn did my soul need that.

I love her "no, I'm gonna talk to him!" smile Hope the FBI can actually get something done in a week. That sounds like not nearly enough time.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

Yeah. As I just told Holden in a chat:

I have no idea where this is all going. Yesterday and the day before, I always had a concrete sense of Kavanaugh's odds-of-confirmation in my head — and it kept changing. Today, that odds-o-meter was replaced with one of those fat solid ribbons of 'go nuts soloing' from Rock Band... with, like, a question mark over it.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

Mine has been pretty firmly in the "It doesn't matter what happens with these testimonies, he's going to get ramrodded through no matter what." to now with Flake flipping and an actual investigation (A shot in the foot investigation, but an investigation), I have no idea man.

Is this what hope feels like?

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

I've lost whatever glands on the body produce hope; if they still exist, they only exude nostalgia for when hope was a thing.

My thoughts are, he'll get confirmed (possibly tie vote, go to Pence to break it), without John "I'll be dead by elections so fuck it" McCain to (possibly) throw that monkey wrench in there. Since it's so close to midterms, GOP then gets hardcore voted off of Capitol Hill, Democratic Senate keeping Trump from doing things, many a Twitter rant until he's replaced (2020 or possibly sooner), then 10-12 years on the general American public forgets and we go through this cycle again.

So, y'know.

At this point I'm counting on him being reelected, though I reaaaaallly hope my cynicism is proven wrong. I don't think the main wing of the Democratic party has learned any lessons from 2016, and if they run another centrist whose chief attraction is that they're not Trump it's not gonna be enough.

Will swap you Jeremy Corbyn if we can have Hilary leading the opposition.

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Discussion

As Lindsay Graham correctly said the other day, if the Democrats want to get their guys appointed, they gotta start winning some elections.

Mike Moore was on Real Time last week and claimed the USA was liberal on most issues. He's probably right.

And yet, the GOP are in control of just about everything, everywhere.

But no one tried to reconcile these two facts.

Hilary had much more money, most of the media on her side, all the celebrity, political, and business endorsements, had more experience and qualifications, and got more votes, didn't grab pussies, and still lost.

I guess gerrymandering, voter suppression has something to do with it. Also, the electoral college that favors empty rural states, Fox News, right-wing radio. But still, to an outsider, it's weird that the GOP gets more than 1% of the vote - as this is the percentage of the country they make no bones about representing.

But Britain can't talk. There was a general election in 2017... the Prime Minister Theresa May ran a terrible campaign (just chanted 'strong & stable' for a month, after years of austerity and rising inequality and screwing up Brexit, and still got returned to power. In Australia too, the conservatives keep winning despite being behind in the polls between elections.

The left are just no good at playing the political game. Whereas the right can make Joe Sixpack chant 'getcha govnent hands off my cancer-ridden body' and believe healthcare is against their interests. And support tax cuts for billionaires. It is an impressive con job, but makes one depressed about human nature.

We'll see happens in the mid-terms... blue-wave, red-wave, or status-quo. Any bets? I wouldn't be surprised if nothing much changes. Millennials would have to stop taking photos of their cereal and go and vote...

not long to go now...

Your realpolitik reminds me of an analogy I like:

"Republicans are the casino, and Democrats are the players — who keep losing, because they think it's a game."
