Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Just saw Béla Tarr's Damnation for the first time.

Everyone tries to find solace in the music, or each other, but it just keeps going around in the same sad 8-bar circles. There is no solace and there never will be.

Even though you've ducked out of the rain into a bar, you're still stuck in the mud in a shitty decrepit Hungarian mining town. Metaphorically.

Well, I'm still stuck in the whole "If a picture's worth a thousand words, why is ultimate brevity the holy grail of describing 24 images a second?" phase of things, so I couldn't say. Sounds like something that might be true though.

Well, remember, writing about movies is like dancing about architecture.

Then he related that concept to film editing as the art of translating a screenplay into the language of film. He said something to the effect of, "A picture is worth a thousand words, but a word is also worth a thousand pictures. And editing is a matter of wrangling all the pieces together in order to form a translation that is true to the original script."

I don't know if that's a new idea or not but it's the first time I've heard it put that way. Thought it was interesting.

He's talked a bit about this before.  Something else I think I heard him talk about was that editing the film is also editing the screenplay, but not with ink and paper but the film itself.  It seems so obvious a though, but hearing that it was pretty liberating.  Many editors when they cut something tend to use the screenplay as an instruction manual.  Murch's way of thinking is rewriting while assembling so that you reach the intended shared vision of the filmmakers and not a literal 1:1 of the screenplay as written.

The colors I see in this still stop me from even watching the trailer.

EDIT: Okay, I watched the thing. Yep, I'll pass.

The first Turtle movie still captures the original comic the best.

WTF were they thinking? They look fucking ridiculous, uncanny-valley terrifying, and still totally fake. First off, making them gigantic is a weird choice. They're supposed to be fast, acrobatic ninjas, instead they look like the Hulk. I'm unconvinced a non-animated TMNT movie is something that ever was or is a good idea, but if they were gonna do it, they should should've at least done the Where the Wild Things approach and had guys in costumes with CGId faces approach.

Do you think the aggressive orange/teal grading is something that we're stuck with forever, or in ten or so years are movies from this period going to look ridiculously dated?

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

I think they're going to look ridiculously dated because something else, probably just as crappy, will have replaced it.

I watched the Total RiffOff on Animal Planet (or large parts of it, anyway). Pretty good fun.

Pumped as fuck. I've been following this since I backed the project on Kickstarter, with ZB sending frequent updates. I loved every second of Garden State, and I don't think Wish I Was Here will disappoint my expectations.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Does anybody else get these invitations from Amazon Preview to take a survey about original content they're considering producing at Amazon Studios?

http://studios.amazon.com/development-slate/series

I don't know who's in charge, but they all seem to be the weirdest, lamest, nonsense I've ever heard pitched. And they all seem to have names like The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud and Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street.

The ones I get asked about all seem to be aimed at 30- and 40-something women and feature fanciful career women getting their crazy, mixed up lives back together and traveling to Dubai or something. I don't have any special problem with that (other than the level twee going on) but why ask me about it?

And speaking of twee, not only is the main character of the latest one called Penelope Cloud, but she's a novelist and guest lecturer at Berkeley, has someone in her life mysteriously described as "her eleven-year-old, Spanish-speaking 'little sister', Adoración", and is infatuated with a male student named "Ivy".

However, it looks like anyone can submit a script to Amazon Studios, so maybe I'll finally have an outlet for my series about six gorgeous, brilliant, athletic, ethnically-diverse young people who are recruited by their college professor to travel back in time to right wrongs and fix the future and along the way find love and learn about life. But I'll have to find a better name than Sequence. Maybe Jilly, Jake, Jennifer, Jack, Tango, and Cash and the Tremendous Time Machine of Professor Marzipan.

I always wanted to do a Voyagers-type show like that where the twist was that every week it was clear that we live in the 'wrong' timeline, and they're fighting to prevent our universe from happening.  "Gee, Professor, if we hadn't just helped that geeky guy find love, 10 million children would be dying every year from preventable diseases because of the greed of the corporation he founded." "Why yes, Jimmy.  Thank goodness we were able to avert that terrible tragedy", etc. etc.

For the next hour, everything in this post is strictly based on the available facts.

Well, the reason being that no real screenwriter would want to submit their work to Amazon. If I recall, the messed up way their contract is setup, you're basically signing away ownership of your work.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

For those of you unfamiliar with the company Rooster Teeth, they are a small production company in Texas who produced Red vs. Blue, a popular web series using Halo video games to create a show. It was very popular and they have created several other series and sites.

Well, two (or three, depending on your time zone) days ago, they announced funding for their live action, sci-fi, comedy movie: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/laze … ster-teeth

I usually worry about projects like this, but this one is not one of those "please donate" stories. They have already mad 157% of their goal. So, original sci-fi gets a shot in the arm smile

Although it should be pointed out that the fact they're sitting at, now 159%, of the their goal rests almost zero on the strength of the movie thet're pitching, and nearly entirely on the fact that it's Roosterteeth making it. Not saying it will be a bad movie or anything, I happen to really like a lot of what Roosterteeth does and am curious to see what they do with the fairly... standard... pitch they have posted, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking this is a sign of some great outcry for more original sci-fi.

Well, that's always going to be a factor. If some unknown musician wants money to produce a rock opera, fundraising may be difficult. If RUSH says they need some upfront money, the floodgates will open.

Alien 3 is the weirdest Withnail & I fanfiction ever.

edit: bloody hell! i am so very ashamed that it took this many minutes for this to occur to me: they should have cast Richard E. Grant as the xenomorph, and called it Withnalien & I.

Personally, given the scifi elements that they have built in to their RvB series on, it is not just that they are doing it, but that they have experience with both comedy and sci-fi, so it gives me encouragement.

Also, I'm not saying that this shows a great public outcry for more sci-fi. I'm saying it is an original sci-fi concept, with the potential to do well, or lay the groundwork for more movies.

Fair enough, I can agree with that, like I said I'm curious to see what they do with it, since the pitch itself doesn't really seem to be all that interesting in and of itself. But I have enough faith in Roosterteeth do to do something cool with it.

And call it a misunderstanding of "shot in the arm".

Perhaps that is the wrong phrase, but I just meant it was an introduction of potentially fresh ideas in to a somewhat stagnant sci-fi market of reboots and retreads (some exceptions, of course).

I never expect the public to fully support a massive sci-fi flick in the way that other films get but that does not mean that I'm not glad to see more interest. So, the shot in the arm reference was more to new ideas and such out there, than greater public support.
