Topic: Favorite episodes of not so great shows.
(Spoilers if you care...)
Pretty much what the title says...Give me your favorite episode of a not so great TV show and why it's your favorite.
To start I've got one from Star Trek Voyager. I think I can pretty safely assume that none of us would consider ST:Voy a Sci Fi masterpiece but there is one specific that always catches my eye whenever I think of Voyager. Namely Season 5 Episode 6: Timeless.
If you haven't seen it, the gist of it is, the crew creates a new way of travelling, the Slipstream drive, yadda yadda cuts years off the trip yadda yadda the usual treknobable. SHort story is, it requires a shuttle craft out in front to calculate the waves of the slipstream and relay them back to voyager so that they don't get smashed to bits.
Well, the shuttle craft (Namely Ensign Kim) screws up one calculation sending Voyager spiraling of into the wild blue yonder of the delta quadrant. However the Shuttlecraft makes it all the way back to earth. So years go by, Kim is tormented by his mistake. So him and Chakotay (The only two people on the craft) decide to try to send a message back in time to fix the mistake and save Voyager. So they become outlaws, stealing a ton of really valuable shit, we get a nice little guest appearance by Levar Burton, we find Voyager completely frozen in ice, they activate the doctor, we get some funny little quips from him, and then there's some more treknobable about sending the a message back to Seven of Nine cortical implant or something like that anyways. All in all they save the day and Voyager continues on it's journey, like the good little mainstream show that it is.
Well this episode sticks out in my mind as my favorite for a lot of reasons, for one it seems like a departure, tonally, from what Voyager seemed to do most of the time. It felt much more, real...I guess would be the best word for it. You could actually understand where these characters were coming from in thier actions. We have the ensign tormented for years by the thought that he killed every single person on Voyager and his ex-commanding officer having to go through it with him.
And then we have this entire unseen history of these two guys on earth and how that has changed them, so that they really are completely different characters, Kim is much more gruff and despondent and Chakotay is well...married, I think it was. But both of them have had to transform themselves into these criminals and outlaws and it may not be a good thing, but hell, their all in it together now. Also it's just a nice breather to be able to see these guys as themselves and yet at the same time be completely different people.
And throughout the entire episode their dynamic together is great, even with the doctor thrown into the mix. We end up with this great mix of the emotions of these guys on a suicide mission to fix a mistake they made while at the same time having to live with what they've done in thier own timeline in order to make it happen. I just love every minute of it.
Anyways, thats enough outta me....Show me what you got.
