I liked the British one (the one directed by Yoda), so I decided to see the American remake. It's not really bad... It's just pointless.

Why the hell did someone decide that a remake was necessary? Do the Hollywood studio executives really think that the "urban" audience can't appreciate a British film? roll

Note to Firefly fans: The original has Alan Tudyk, the remake has Ron Glass.

Allow me to second this, it's one of a very select few DTV action movies that's actually better than most theatrical releases. Some really fun action sequences

An interesting premise, but... This story would've probably worked better as a 45-minute Twilight Zone episode (although Twilight Zone wouldn't be able to afford Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt).

Wikipedia says someone created a much shorter cut of the movie. Somehow I'm not suprised big_smile

Re: Last movie you watched

In the continueing saga of movies BDA gets paid to watch*, I present:

Identity Thief:

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT_4VwtkasHN5gh1R2oy2OCiDuwFoV_Bzk22clmfpgHtJr_0o7j1A

A fairly typical example of modern comedies in most respects, good measures of crude humour, slapstick and pathos. Not really much else to report. Both Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy put in really solid performances. If you liked the Hangover you'll probably like this... It's not something I would personally seek out to watch, but it's not insufferable to sit through.

The Croods:

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQXDxxUtKhJE2sZBfzSp0uqFAjco_3r2tr9xpD6mZPU7-f7RcWd5g

This is actually one I've been wanting to watch for a while now. Story wise it's your fairly typical family feature fare (Troubled family, problems, problems, raise stakes, cute and fluffy things, raise stakes, funny moment, family seperated, happy ending).  So not really much to report there. Although where this movie really stood out for me was in the concept and art design. If you don't know this about me, I am a HUGE sucker for cool, alien, weird worlds with awesome art design and cool concepts (Hence why I still love Avatar, depsite it's fairly stock story), and this one defitely delivers. Once they leave the cave (Not spoilers, that's literally the premise) and venture out, the art design, character design, everything, is firing on all cylinders. Everything is just so cool to look at, and in every corner of the frame is something awesome to see. The creature design especially had me giggling with every new animal.

However, speaking personally I will say I think the movie would have been better off if they lightened off the "caveman" jokes, by about the 16th one they were starting to feel pretty heavy handed, and that's just the first 10 minutes.

Also... Nick Cage should just NOT do voice acting, it's literally impossible to take him seriously. Like, just, nope, not happening. (That said, the movie did manage to pull even my strings by the end with his character, so kudos to them)

At the end of the day I'd say, if you like the whole alien worlds idea and the visual vistas of every frame and can let that pave over the weaker spots in the story I'd say definitely give this one a watch. If that's not your thing, you can pretty safely assume you know almost every beat in the story and move on.

Mr. Brooks isn't nearly as edgy and quirky as it could be. A few decades ago this movie would've been quite shocking. Nowadays, not so much. After other semi-satirical murderer-themed films (Natural Born Killers, American Psycho etc.) it seems a little bland (and almost quaint). I'm not saying it's a bad movie... It's just not good enough to rejuvenate Kevin Costner's career as an A-list leading man (besides, he's probably too old now to fully regain this status).

Inland Empire is David Lynch at his Lynchiest, so don't expect any coherent structure (it was filmed without a complete screenplay). Since it was shot on SD digital video, the picture quality leaves much to be desired. David may think that it makes the movie better. I disagree - it just makes it feel more like a documentary (albeit one made on drugs).

Much of the movie was shot in my country (with some of our stars). Unlike many other projects shot in Poland, it didn't receive any public funding (as far as I know). I can only imagine the outrage if our tax money were spent on something like this wink

While I like some of Lynch's stuff (Blue Velvet, the hypnotizing Eraserhead and the intriguing Twin Peaks), Inland Empire is simply too much for me. Three hours of this mindfuckery is exhausting. Supposedly, the American distributor demanded a version shorter by 20 minutes and David Lynch responded by sending them a cut longer by 20 minutes.

So my experience with Shakespeare's King Lear is limited to Fool by Christopher Moore, and now this (I may have read it in high school, but I tend to think not as no witches appeared at the beginning).  I liked this flick, not so much for the color palette and costuming (which were amazing), but for the extrapolation of back story which is basically non-existent in the Shakespeare play (or so the commentary noted on my second viewing).  This was also my first Kurosawa flick which was absent of Toshiro Mifune (previous flicks viewed with him were Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Stray Dog, and Seven Samurai), but not withstanding this is a truly epic film, the direction of riders and soldiers during the military scenes is of a large scale and very well choreographed, the scenery is often gorgeous, and the decline of Lord Ichimonji is well played through the Noh make-up and some very extreme facial expressions the actor uses throughout the film.  Also worth noting is the mix of Noh and Western music, which tends to intermingle at odd times but does add effect when necessary.

All and all, a decent flick...Next up on the list, rewatching SLC Punk, and finding something else from the Criterion Collection I haven't seen that catches my attention...

A lavish and visually impressive fantasy, a cross between Alice In Wonderland and Kill Bill. The only thing that's missing here is an interesting plot. It's just too much style with almost no substance.

I'd love to hear what FIYH had to say about it, but the commentary is still missing (I'm sure the guys will put it up again as soon as they can).

Watched this yesterday: The Wrong Box. It's a mid-60s drawing room farce with a terrific cast and a fun little plot. Not all it could be, but if you like Ealing comedies or the Magnificent Men/Daring Young Men movies you might get a kick out of it.

Not nearly as lascivious as the poster suggests, by the way. Once those two meet, Caine has a hilarious line about "I often see you thru the window when I'm walking, and I get the most powerful urge to nod. But my uncle doesn't approve of such things."

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

A grim thriller written by William Goldman (any FIYH listener will know who that is). The dark, cynical tone just screams "1970s". The plot is somewhat far-fetched, but still fairly terrifying.

I have to admit that, until now, I didn't know where the famous "Is it safe?" quote originally came from.

Re: Last movie you watched

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Eragon_Teaser_Poster_10.jpg

A dull, uninspired adaptation of Joseph Campbell's "hero's journey". It felt like the work of a teenage fan of Star Wars and LOTR. I checked the Wikipedia page and... surprise, surprise... turns out that the original book was written by a teenager (only a teenager could think that Eragon, which is one letter away from "dragon", is a clever title). I wonder how closely the movie follows the book (I haven't read it), so I'll give Paolini the benefit of the doubt and lay part of the blame at the feet of the filmmakers. It's not enough to use the Hero's Journey, you have to adapt it (a hint: create a unique world, like George Lucas and the Wachowskis did). Eragon is just Star Wars Episode IV reenacted in Middle-Earth without any hint of original thought. It's sad that major studios greenlight scripts that are barely good enough for Asylum. Eragon deserved to bomb much more horribly than it did; it makes John Carter look like Citizen Kane.

Advice to teenage writers: the next time you feel like writing a fantasy story, imagine Sam Jackson beating the crap out of you and shouting: "Imagination, motherfucker! Can you use it?!"

Re: Last movie you watched

Eragon is literally the exact same plot as Star Wars with the names swapped out. No exaggeration. It is beat for beat the same movie. I'd love to see a commentary on why Star Wars works and Eragon fails.

Re: Last movie you watched

I'm about 80% sure I read the book (but didn't bother with the sequels), and yeah. The kid just rewrote STAR WARS, and not even well. It only got published because his parents had some pull, and it only became a movie because of the "teenage prodigy" marketing angle.

We should do that commentary. Though I'd have to watch ERAGON again.

Worth noting, no attempt has been made to make the sequels, which is actually surprising. Even PERCY JACKSON got a sequel.

If Eragon had come out last year, a sequel would probably be in production. This was before studios were desperate for the next big teenage fantasy franchise. Now every damn book series is getting adapted. What the fuck is "The Mortal Instruments" or "Divergent"? No one knows, but they have empowered young girls fighting the forces of darkness with sexy, roguish young men, and as we all know, that's the only thing that teenage girls are looking for in a movie.

"Eragon" is a perfectly good title for a movie.

"Seven" is a bad title for a movie.

"Seven" could be a perfectly good title for a few dozen different movies, I think that's the issue. It could be seven samurai, seven virtues, seven dwarfs, seven seconds till midnight, anything.
