as you should be.
and speaking of franchises, you have a certain Jeff Goldblum 'running away from dinosaurs' movie to add colorful input to.
regardless, As long as you skip AVP 1 and 2, i'll keep listening.
at least until you guys finally do return of the jedi.
I love the way Ripley says "Well, we saved the world" at the end, regardless of the pretty massive nuclear explosion they caused by crashing the ship into the planet.
"We saved the world. Well... except for that one bit we turned to glass... but the rest of it is totally saved!"
I distinctly remember seeing this flick in the theaters during a pretty massive all-day theater-hopping session with some buddies. We caught this, Star Ship Troopers, Mortal Kombat and The Jackal. The Jackal was the last one we saw, and I'm so glad we saw that one, cause otherwise it would have been a waste of money. No, I didn't like Star Ship Troopers. Sorry.
I also remember someone in the audience loudly asking "Is she fucking the alien!?" and the whole theater laughed for like five minutes. Good times...
Like some of you this was the first time I had ever opened my copy of the 4th movie (from the first 4 disc Alien set). I even found a pack of unopened trading cards in there. I can honestly say almost none of it was familiar, meaning I had managed to block out the one theatrical viewing
With regard to Legend of the Overfiend, I'll toss in two trivia points. When it first made its way over to the US, as an untranslated bootleg selling at anime and Star Trek conventions, it was known as Wandering Kid as that's a more direct translation of the original title. Also, every time this story of daemon rape was adapted the ages of the characters was moved upwards. In the original comic, the kids are in elementary/middle school (oh, those wacky Japanese). For the animated version they became high school students, and naturally all US translations have made them college kids... who wear high school uniforms and such. You know a show is hard core when the Japanese had to edit things down- because the original 5 shows were direct to video there were no restrictions, but the later theatrical version cuts out some of the more brutal stuff.
I watched this one during a spurt of Alien watching a few months back. I enjoyed bits of it, but certainly it's a mess. I think, though, that I have lower expectations for an Alien film than most people, especially those alive in the 80's. By the time I started watching the films, I knew that there were going to be diminishing returns, and watched them accordingly. As someone said, A4 is just fine if you think of it as a cheap SyFy Sunday movie.
I kinda have highish hopes for the prequels, though. CG has finally gotten to the point that the Aliens can be rendered without doing a lot of distracting puppet work.
I found the comment that Ridley Scott had never been asked to do another film interesting. There's an old story that after Aliens Cameron was asked to do the third film, and his condition was he'd do it if Scott did part 4. Needless to say that was the deal breaker, so what didn't FOX like about Scott?

I can't imagine at all that that story is true. I bet Scott just wasn't asked back because the second movie was so much more successful, and they wanted directors who would be willing to remake it with as small a budget as possible. Scott and Cameron both weren't going to want to do that. Hence grabbing a nobody from obscurity, and then a French art film director who didn't know any better,
This movie is the Batman & Robin of the Alien series. It's two hours of nipples on the bat suit and Brad Dourif as Mister Freeze. If they really think this is a "franchise" and not just two good movies with the same actress, the studio killed it dead with this mess. I personally think we need more new IP, but if you have to go back to the well, give Ridley Scott back control to maybe get our "Alien Begins."
Mal's line was actually, "They say never to hit a man with a closed fist, but it is, on occasion, hilarious.".
Anyway, this film hurt me. Not so much as a fan of the franchise, but as a Whedon fan. I can't count the number of people who have scoffed at my love for Firefly by saying, "Oh, yeah, the guy who wrote 'Alien: Resurrection' made something good. Riiiight." I hope that The Avengers is good, for that sake.
Seriously? The first thing your people think of when they hear Whedon is Alien Resurrection???!!?!
Dude you need to get new people, like seriously fast. I am a huuuuuuuuuuge Whedon fan and I didn't even know he did the first draft of this..... thing.
Well, remember, more people saw Alien 4 in theaters then probably ever saw Buffy on TV (minor hit on a minor network). Reminds me of when what most people would have known Frank Miller from was his writing Robocop 2.

umm.... When did we say this was the first thing we thought of? I'm a pretty big Whedon fan myself, but If I'm not up to your standards of Whedonosity, then I will happily tender my resignation.

Whoaaa, there, calm your horses, buddy. Maul's post was in response to DoctorSubmarine's, not your podcast.

We haven't gotten any show notes for this one yet, so does anyone have any recommendations for good documentaries on failed films (or at least productions gone wrong)? I have Lost in La Mancha, and Killing Priscilla doesn't seem to be on Netflix. I couldn't hear the other one Dorkman mentioned.

You should check out 'Incident At Loch Ness.' Sadly, I don't think Herzog's 'Enigma of Loch Ness' is ever going to make it out of the cutting room, but the documentary about the making of it is rather insightful.
Invid, "Overnight" is the best one I know, and it's usually on Netflix instant. Very hard watch.
At Comic Con, Joss was on a panel with JJ Abrams and they were talking about the nerdiest fan interactions they had ever had. JJ started, telling a story of how he used to write letters to FX guys, and the guy from Exorcist actually mailed him the tongue from the movie.
Joss followed, saying "well, I do have an Alien egg...but I had to bury the franchise in order to get it."
How can you stay mad at a guy like that, huh?
Overnight (Boondock Saints)
Killing Priscilla (Eye of the Beholder)
Lost in La Mancha (Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote)
Hearts of Darkness (Apocalypse Now)
My problem with this movie has always been that it just isn't very good. It's not bad, it's just not good. It's stuck in the middle, not unsuccessful enough to get het up about, while not having really much of anything going for it.
It invokes absolutely no emotion in me at all. Which is about the worst thing I can say about a movie.
Man, you guys really can't tell our voices apart, can you?
Just noticed Eddie's wonderfully exuberant overreaction....
Well done sir.
Haven't seen either, but Burden of Dreams is supposed to be a great documentary on the production of Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, a film that spent it's entire production teetering on the brink of failure.
Apparently at one point, some locals approached Herzog asking permission to literally kill the star of the film, as they found his actions so repulsive and disrespectful.
Alien resurrection is a great movie. My voice almost than screaming and shouting while I'm watching it. It is very scary and full of suspense.
I'm thinking what people do If alien attack us.
sounds crazy guys?
