Not sure it really counted as a complaint, and the comment was less about MDK specifically and more about the potential for a double standard being applied. What for instance is acceptable exploitation of low common denominators and who gets to decide? Can all agree on the lowest common denominators anyway? Why is the use of cartoon animation ok for one channel and not for another? Why is one ridiculous comedy series better than another ridiculous comedy series?

You've explained your intentions better above, though I completely disagree on FreddieW's channel. I struggle to think of another channel that has broken the typical youtube mold of "talking crap into webcam" more.

Honestly, I can't answer that. And I am absolutely certain that it is 100% dependent on who you're talking too. But then, you ask one of my high school friends his opinion of the prequel trilogy and he'll give you a 4 hour lecture on why it is the sole and only piece of true art ever created. And I think we as a community might have a few points to bring to bare against him.

I fully expect this thread to be a battleground for certain points of view, in fact I hope it does. I have so many ideas and feelings about this entire area, but many fewer words to accurately convey them, debate seems to be the best way to find them.

Let me cast my argument into terms we are used to talking about on this forum. A couple of big tentpoles just got released this weekend; some kinda sci-fi thing where the trailer looked like it could be pretty cool, and some soccer-dad turned super spy thing. The former has a lot of cool ideas, the characters are just barely 2 dimensional, you can see the hints of some larger understanding going on behind the scenes, but it never manages to capitalize on it, then the ending is just the worst happily ever after deus ec machina BS you've ever seen, and the movie just winds up being sort of whatever. The latter is just stupid summer schlock, the studio clearly took over half way through, the characters are fleshy models to stand in front of explosions, and look hot.

Clearly none of us on this forum would be overly ecstatic over either of these, they're your typical modern summer whatever movies, we expect more, we want movies that are intelligent, make us think and feel, are entertaining without assuming we are idiots.

Now moving to youtube, the first kind of movie would hold all those little sci-fi shorts, the ones that look really cool, have some cool concepts, clearly someone, at some point along the way really cared about this thing but at the end of the day just wind up being a 5 minute action scene with no point. Or those projects or vlogs that people obviously care about but never seem to actually function properly, so it winds up falling back on the stereotypical jokes and format.

The second type of movie are the ones that don't even try, they simply grab the nearest internet fanboy reference and run with it. These are the ones that never even tried to make something beyond whatever it is they were making, "It's Mario holding a machete driving a tank through a bacon city, how is that not the most awesome thing you've ever seen????" Or yes, this section could also include the webcam on my laptop vlog about my cat's vomit, that youtube was so famous for back in the day.

As with our blockbusters, I'm not okay with that being the height of our online media. I know it can be more than that, we can have intelligent, entertaining, movies that don't feel the need to fall back on Scary Movie level shit and dick jokes.

Alright and I'll say this. Just as we say here that every movie doesn't need to be The Fountain, we are allowed to have fun. But we can also tell when we're being insulted by a movie.

And on that, I'm sure I've only muddied the waters further, but hey, that's my role in life apparently.

Couple more links:

Lizzie Bennet Diaries A modernized adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, presented as a series of vlogs by Lizzie Bennet, along with a few spin off vlogs by other characters that also tie into the story.

Geek and Sundry Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day's pet project. I primarily watch Tabletop (Essentially let's plays for Table Top games hosted by Wil Wheaton), I've watched a bit of Co-Optitude (The Day siblings revisist video games from their past) and it's fun, they also have some more narrative webseries' and other geek based vlog type series that I haven't checked out yet.

BDA is right. It's worth remembering that the most popular YouTube personality is Pewdiepie, who produces some of the most horrid content you could possibly imagine.

Game theory actually did an episode on Pewdiepie, and how various factors pushed Youtube to promote him.
