Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

I maintain that all the above applies to the scene in question as well.  And is it horrifying within the context of the story?  Again, sure it is.  It's the "OMG HBO you crossed a line" swooning that I don't understand.  GoT has been jam-packed with murder and mayhem and cruelty and, yes, sexual assaults since day one.   Based on the show so far, consensual sex seems to be a bit of a rarity in Westeros.   I just don't see how this particular assault is the deal-breaker for some people.   But if it is, it is.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

Alright, well I guess we'll agree to disagree on this. And we'll see how it's handled next week.

Well, to answer your question, I am and have always been horrified by Jamie, specifically, and GoT's sensibility from day one. So, you are not the only person "horrified" by it, Doc.

Beyond that, I really don't have an answer. HBO has been pushing the boundaries as far as they can with GoT. I mean, if I recall correctly, wasn't Danereys marriage to Drogo and their wedding night considered "rapey" as well? I only ask because I can't remember.

God loves you!

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

In the book, she gives Drogo permission, but on the tv series, he rapes her. Which GRRM said he preferred that change. I think the reasoning was that it made her arc from powerless to empowered much stronger.
Which is fair enough, 'cause even though she gives him permission in the book... he still, you know, purchased her, so... yeah.

Edit: Trey's right, consent in Westeros is pretty compromised. I haven't been horrified by anything that's happened on the show, as I just accept it as a shitty place full of shitty people. I think if people are objecting to it based on the objective act, then yes, it is silly outrage (as has been said, why does *this* instance cross the line?). But I was under the impression people were objecting because of it seeming out of character. Your mileage may of course vary.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

In the book, Dany consents the first time.  But GRRM makes it very clear in the book that for a while after her deflowering, the sex life in the Drogo household was most assuredly rapey.  SO rapey that Dany is about to kill herself until she has a dream about the dragon eggs.   She wakes from this dream with a new perspective, and their relationship from that point on becomes more about love and mutual respect.

In the show, they compress those events.  In the scene where Jason Momoa is absolutely mauling poor Emilla Clarke , you see the look of pain on Dany's face, until she focuses on her Dragon Eggs.  Then you see a change in her.  It's subtle, but the point is made clear.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

Okay, so I still think that regardless of Jaime's moral character he would never rape someone. Hurting women, especially Cersei, is something that time and time again we're reminded of his disgust for. He remembers his anger at not being able to prevent the Mad King from raping his wife. In season 1, Ned asks Cersei if a bruise on her face is from Robert, and she replies that "Jaime would have killed him." He puts his own safety at risk to prevent Brienne from being raped. He says that he would rather die than be raped.

The message is clear.

Is Jaime a sterling example of moral fortitude? Of course not. But of all the ways to show that, they had to choose the one thing that we've been assured is beyond even his capacity for evil? Come the fuck on.

Anyway, my friend and I have been doing a weekly podcast this season, and we just did one discussing this episode. I encourage you to listen and explain to me why I'm wrong.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

Here's the thing with a lot of men who commit date rape: they don't necessarily think it's rape.  Many men associate rape with something akin to physical violence and beating.  But if you were to ask those same men that if a woman who has sex with them repeatedly suddenly says no, but you kind of talk her into it, was considered rape, they wouldn't think so.  Most rape doesn't resemble The Accused.  Most rape resembles what Jaime did to Cersei or that scene from Mad Men.

Again, the age/world they are living in does not have the benefit we have of identifying sexual agency.  You cannot hold a fictional period world up to our standards.

I think if Jaime's is smart enough to know that rape is wrong, he's smart enough to know what rape is.

Yup.  Apparently this is the first example of the series getting ahead of the books.  Probably won't be the last for this season, either.

This was the exchange between my wife and I when the baby was put on the altar:
(I've read the books, she hasn't).

Wife:  Wait, what is this.

Me:  ....I......I don't know.

Wife:  What do you mean?

Me:....I....I....this isn't....

(Night's King appears)

Both:  WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

Hmm.
We have the books, which could be used to spoil the tv series. But, if the tv show catches up and overtakes, they'll be able to spoil the books. So, is this an unprecedented situation in pop culture?
It's going to make for an interesting online dynamic if that happens. I think I feel tentatively uncomfortable.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire (BOOK READERS ONLY; MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

As Dorkman mentioned in the grab bag episode, this has happened in Anime. in a long running series, they simply put in filler episodes for a season or two until there's enough new comic book pages to fill a season of animation. For shorter series, they plan on just diverging from the original at some point and doing their own ending. Full Metal Alchemist did this. Then, once the manga ended, they went back and did another series which skipped much of the first half and adapted the new ending.

I liked how episode 5 was basically just a sitcom. The show has had plenty of moments like that in the past but this episode was practically nothing but them top to bottom.
