If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. It was the first fantasy novel that properly engrossed me throughout.

We did not get a VCR until I was in high school, and cable waited until a few years after that (pay for TV? Not in this house!). So, movies I actually saw more than once in those formative years were restricted to what managed to be played on local TV on the weekends. I'd say The Cowboys, King Kong, and maybe one of the early Marx Brothers films. More than those, though, the TV series Star Blazers defines my childhood. I lived that show for all of 4th grade.

Same here, I had to visit friends to see or do anything that wasn't currently being broadcast...and I lived in farm country several miles from the nearest subdivision. VCR came in around 1990 (age 16-ish), never had cable in my parents' place. If I wanted to see a movie more than once, I'd better just stay in the theater and wait for the next show.

After making my list, I rewatched the movies, which has made me want to read the books again as well. I don't currently have a copy of The Last Unicorn, my favorite of the three, so I went with The Neverending Story and it's just as lovely as I remember. It's a really brilliant read.

When I was a little boy I would mutilate the TV Guide. Each week, it would be totally dog-eared because I would repeatedly scour it to see if any channel was broadcasting one of my favorite movies. (My dad said I was acting like a rabbi transcribing the Talmud and if I wanted to do something why don't I get my ass outside and wash his goddamn car. He had an El Camino, big-block.)  Then the video rental stores never had any of the movies I was so obsessed with. They were always rented by someone else. The three main ones were Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi.

Totally, Rob! I'd pull the funnies and the TV guide section out of the newspaper every Sunday and read the whole listing of every movie scheduled that week. When I went away to college I became known as the guy to who could (and would compulsively) name-that-movie just by walking into (or past) the TV room and catching a glimpse of a given scene. MPAA and star-ratings on demand were also part of the services I provided.  cool
