I went to an Alien marathon last night and the print used for Alien was pretty horrible. It's been a long time since I've seen actual film being projected, so it wasn't the best reintroduction.
The Keanu Reeves-hosted film vs digital doco Side By Side is now available on Amazon Instant Video. I haven't watched it yet, but there it is.
Ridley Scott talking about his exposure to RED
I like how he says the first thing to focus on to get the people back in the cinema is the story. Prometheus was a masterpiece, wasn't it Ridley?

On a more positive note, I will say I recently got to see The Master projected in 70mm and it was absolutely gorgeous. Reminded me how I do kinda miss real film projection, something about just hearing the quiet hum of the projector, the bright vibrant look of that image is really special to me.
I saw Master in 70 as well at the arclight and goddamn did it look gorgeous. They depth of field was roughly the width of a nose hair and you could see different PARTS of a persons face just slightly out of focus. To me there is a strange, literal, alchemy with film that I'm not quite sure digital can be fully capable of replicating in my lifetime. Not saying most films shouldn't be digital, and I dont hate digital at all, I just think there will always be a place for actual film.

and you're sure it wasn't shot on a DSLR?!
I dont hate digital at all, I just think there will always be a place for actual film.
I dont hate CGI at all, I just think there will always be a place for a man in a rubber suit.
I dont hate widescreen at all, I just think there will always be a place for Academy ratio.
I dont hate stereo at all, I just think there will always be a place for monaural soundtracks.
I dont hate color at all, I just think there will always be a place for black-and-white.
I dont hate sound at all, I just think there will always be a place for silent pictures.
I dont hate electric drive at all, I just think there will always be a place for hand cranking.
You are probably all right, but I do see a trend....
i think Eddie's mastered the art of being diplomatic about the topic
I think there'll always be a place for diplomacy.
