oh yes sir! i was mildly skeptical going in (i am not a Dave Eggers fan) but from the opening of the film i was sucked in. i related to Max Records portrayal of Max in so many ways. i agree with a review i heard somewhere that said it was a "Junior Cassavettes" film. the whole time it was like watching someone carry a beautiful Faberge egg, and i kept thinking "please don't drop this!" fortunately, for me, spike jonze never did. it's really an emotional narrative, not so much a straight forward story, but it hits all the right notes (again, for me).

definitely worth a rent (i bought the blu ray dvd combo for when i someday own a blu ray player).

would you guys ever consider doing "Where the Wild Things Are"? that was my favorite movie last year, and it has some amazing visuals. i am not sure there is enough to say to carry a whole commentary though.

wow. i am sounding like an asshole. which i never meant to do. i meant i don't own an HDTV. i by no means think i am better than someone who does. in fact, wish i did. i so badly want a blu-ray player, it's not funny. but i can't swing it right now. besides, what's the point without the hdtv (1080p not 720... come on, i want true HD).

ANYWAY, sunshine...

dorkman - you're right about my narrow mindednes, but keep in mind, i am the guy who has lived in the same apartment for a year this month, and only three weeks ago got internet because before i couldn't justify the cost. i don't buy or own any of the niceties you mentioned (and i probably would belittle people for those purchases but that's just other frustrations manifesting themselves as anger smile but it is closeminded of me to assume there is no practical use for the ipad.

anyway, back to what this forum is really about, the last time i saw sunshine was in theaters, and i remember my friends complaint was the same as everyone on DiF. i liked the Jason X analogy (and I think Jason X is actually a fun movie) so as I mentioned before, I liked both halves of this film. i would like to see a movie like brian mentioned, of an Apollo 13 that hasn't happened yet. as everyone else has mentioned, the visuals are just beautiful.

oh and even though it would probably (see definitely) suck i would totally watch Die Hard in space!!

so it's revealed in this commentary that dorkman has an ipad...

ipad (particularly first generation)? really? my hatred of Avatar was finally supplemented by my hatred for the ipad. my party line on that product is it's the easiest way to say "Fuck you. I got money."

but i still love you dorkman.

oh and even though sunshine, to me, is almost two different movies, i liked them both.

Great discussion about the film. I felt all the criticisms (and praise) were fair. I have seen the movie once and have no real interest in seeing it again. This isn't out of protest, there is just nothing about the movie that makes me want to revisit it (but as mentioned in the discussion, i will revisit District 9 many times).

That being said i have two questions to toss out:
1) How did this movie make as much money as it did? It is a visually stunning spectacle to be sure, and there is a basic enough story, but I still don't understand why it got so much repeat business. The people in front of me in line when I saw it had already seen it once (not in 3D) and were coming back because they said the story was "So good".

2) I tend to agree with the Onion's A.V. Club review of this movie, in that they just don't understand why so many critics love this movie (Still something like 84% on Rotten Tomatoes). What's the deal there? Again, visually: great. Story: not great. So where are the extremely positive reviews coming from?

Sorry. It appears I exaggerated (but only slightly). I think the last 3D movie i saw was Avatar (on IMAX) and since then I remember hearing they have raised the price.

I just did some quick research (via Movietickets.com) and it appears the difference at the theaters near me (several of which offer IMAX) are:
Regular price - $9
Real D 3D (not IMAX) - $14
3D IMAX - $16

I know it could be much worse, with some cities charging the real D price for regular movies, but there hasn't been anything released recently that i felt the need to pay $7 extra for.

btw, are these prices reasonable? What are theaters charging in other cities?

I am very excited to finally hear the DiF crew's thoughts on Avatar. Since my postings back during its release I have had many opinions and thoughts on the movie  (none of them ever really being a strong like for the film) from my initial hatred, which fueled me for several months to finally being at a place where I can go "eh, it's a nice visual spectacle".

it's still hard for me to accept, though i can understand now, how it gets such acclaim. to me it will always be like watching someone else play a really cool looking video game. that being said, my new found understanding of people's appreciation comes in part out of finding 3D to be mainly a gimmick but seeing how it can actually be used to create an alternate reality, as was the case with Avatar. in most cases, i refuse to pay the 10 extra dollars to see a film in 3D (except for the next Saw... what can I say, that franchise is my one guilty pleasure, give me that!)

oh and DING DING DING!! FIRE TRUCK!!!

Love Dorkman's summary of the plot at about the 47 minute mark: "Okay...okay...I'll go talk to the Fallen (who didn't exist before"...'shut up. fuck you.'"

this commentary helped me understand the movie better than the movie did. it still doesn't make sense. but thanks for trying guys.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Casino Royale (2006)

Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Love Actually (2003)

Team America: World Police (2004)
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

and I am going to be a little controversial here and say parts of the Saw franchise, which are a guilty pleasure of mine (hey, they helped start a whole new sub genre of horror, so there is probably some cultural studies significance to that).

“Let's go see a $500 million sci-fi allegory about the perils of wasteful human behavior”

In this sense I was using the definition of “exploitation film” from the Stephen Heller work “Nightmare U.S.A.” which since I don’t have it near me at the time I can’t quote exactly but I can paraphrase as a film that sacrifices plot in place of some form of spectacle (he quotes I believe Friedman as saying Jurassic Park was one of the most expensive exploitation films ever made, which I am not sure how I feel about that). But more to the point…

I haven’t watched or read much from Cameron about the film, but every television ad I’ve seen (and I don’t watch much television either, but it’s constantly playing when I am out in public) has the text “Movies will… (Shot of blue people)… Never be… (Shot of that lion creature jumping at us)... The Same (robots or something).” So that’s where I was pulling that from. I guess I just felt making this claim was a touch of hubris, and for some reason that really irritated me. But to be fair, as you said, marketing is a completely different beast altogether, and they certainly can’t say “This movie… will do… absolutely nothing.” Knowing that Cameron’s intention with this film was to push the limits of visual effects helps clarify things a little more for me.

Still I wonder (again, without having seen it) how this is going to change CG film making. As beautiful as the trailers look, and they do look stunning, it still has a somewhat cartoon-y feel to it. So much so that someone I saw the trailer with asked me “So this is an animated film?”  Isn’t there an asymptotic effect when it comes to CG? Perhaps I am just being naive.

On a side note: I have been on a big kick since I started listening to the podcast a few months back of going back, re-watching and really appreciating movies with practical effects, in no small part because of Trey’s expertise and input in the discussions (I loved watching the Thing and my new all-time favorite zombie movie is now Return of the Living Dead).

Before I make any further judgments, I am going to completely roll over and see this film, probably even tonight, you know, after my screening of Old Dogs, and most likely have a good time. So what was I arguing about again?

Oh and I completely skipped 2012 (it looked dreadful), but I would like to hear more about this losing the will to live story.

Avatar. I feel like someone should bring it up, seeing as how today is the big day. And to be honest, I am still on the fence about this movie. I feel like it’s the ultimate example of an exploitation film. All the reviews I have read seem to praise its visuals while calling its plot one dimensional, which seems like kind of a double standard, considering this praise is the same used to deride films such as Transformers (and I am not defending Transformers).

Basically my biggest gripe (without having seen it) is with the marketing. “Movies will never be the same”? This seems kind of arrogant. It’s definitely trying to guilt the Cineaste in all of us into seeing it because if it really is going to change films, who wants to miss the one that started it all. But this is a ludicrous claim to make, because no one knows if it will. The Abyss, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park. All movies you guys have discussed that did change movies, but none of them used this as their advertising gimmick. I feel like Cameron had over ten years of this idea brewing in his head, couldn’t he give us amazing visuals and a really good story?

Again these are all my complaints without having seen the film. Maybe I just need to relax and learn to have a good time with it. And I think I could if I wasn’t being reminded every 5 minutes how this movie will blow my mind. I wanted to get your opinions, since I think you each bring something interesting to the table. Who knows. Maybe you can convince me to get off my high horse and go see it.

Just finished listening to the commentary and I am going to have to join Mike in that Nightmare loving (1,2,3... and so on). I feel the same way Mike does about loving this film and not quite being on board with the Princess Bride. But hey, that's why they make lots of movies.

YES! you guys did a commentary for the movie that made me want to make movies. i have seen this film 10 times in theaters (counting all the re-releases).

i once had a film professor call this "the impossible movie". i never had him explain what he meant by that and i am still curious about that statement to this day.
