I don't remember hearing of anything like this, so correct me if so, but I'd like to hear an Intermission about good vfx vs bad vfx, what defines good or bad, why fx would end up good or bad, and how fx companies get hired on to a particular project.

I'd have to sift through some faves myself, but anything with any of you pointing out magic beans, and/or describing what a magic bean is. I know that info is on this site already, but for purposes of the video, and anyone who might dive right into a podcast before checking the rest of the site first.

All I can really say about this movie is that I salute the VFX artists who created everything, but you really couldn't pay me to watch this movie a second time. I've actually only seen half of it, and I've heard the DIF for it. (which was great, as always)

Also, I'm a Cusack fan, and I couldn't have cared less about his character in this.

So, yeah. Didn't like the movie. VFX were badass.

Eddie -  I'd really appreciate that, my friend. Thanks so much. re: FCP

If you *can* pass me some work that would be awesome.

Thanks for the AVID tip, also.

I really appreciate all the support. smile

re: Seth_Brower- Thank you.  I thought about that first place for days, but I've never lived in LA, and if a bunch of people start telling me to re-think a part of town...I'll def. consider that pov =P

Thanks for the support smile

What are you best at, passable at, and what do you think you could handle?

Best at After Effects. Passable at Avid, with a couple hours of brushing up. (was my first edit experience, and learned it like the back of my hand), and I'm sure I could handle FCP, if I watched some videos, or had it available for a couple hours.

Otherwise, I'm familiar with a few other vfx apps, (some 3D, but mostly 2D), and I honestly love this stuff. I'm more comfortable in terms of 2D work, for now, but I want to learn everything I can. Different apps, methods, everything.

Driving. Also, it looks like I'll actually have a better living arrangement, after all. Now *cracks knuckles* to scour the web/phone and find a job. smile

Sooo, if it makes a difference, the house with the room I might rent is 4 miles from USC, which I'm hearing isn't the best area, but the friend who's lived there for about 5 years, swears it's not that bad.

I'm not picky, really. I just wanna move to LA, not live in my car, work, and not get shot.

@ Eddie - If you mean calling production houses, yeah I def. will. So far, I've been checking 2-pop, craigslist, Motionagrapher, etc. and emailing like crazy.

I know I can do the work, I just need that one (or 2, or 3) foot in the door so I can prove it.  smile

Good tip, and thanks. yeah I've been applying to everything and anything that I know I can do. The only thing i can't do yet (cuz I have no access) is Final Cut, but I could learn it easily. I've thought about boning up on FCP tutorials so I can at least say that I'm familiar with it. Other than that...fingers crossed.

Looks like Crenshaw and St Charles. Between Venice blvd and W. Washington.

And yes, meeting would be great.

I'm looking at a 2 week eta for L.A. arrival & my current 2 options are a hotel for 2 wks, or renting a room on Crenshaw for at least 6 wks.

Hotel = better area for $X but only 2 wks, or

House = relatively bad area, but more stay time for the $, while I look for work., & I have a friend there.

Friend claims all is fine in that neighborhood, but others are advising me against it...but...better for my budget, and...i know someone.

I don't have much time to decide on either, but the hotel is reserved as a backup.

Finding a job is a different story altogether (but if anyone has advice, I'm all ears lol)

Thoughts/advice/etc.?

This is great stuff. Also, I don't personally lay claim to any specific religion. I'm not a big fan of organized religion in general. For example, too many "rules" & too much bad shit has happened in the name of a religion. But i do believe in a higher power of some kind. So there's that. To each their own. I do like that Teague brings up that you never see athiests trying to cram their beliefs down everyone's throat.  - other than that note...good commentary, as usual ; ) (can't wait to hear you guys go off on T3)

re: Twig24 - yeah I get what you mean. Would be interesting if they explained that a bit, and having Shia's character be the one to ask, rather than just Optimus spitting it out, would've been a good device to have that exposition. "uh..so...guys?....why a car?..."

I think that's just one of those things (i.e. magic beans) that you have to kinda go with, though.  It wouldn't be necessary to the plot to know that & could have come off totally cheesy had they tried to explain it, but yeah i would ask if I were in that situation ; )

The only thing that bothered me (Trans 1) was that the map was embedded into the glasses. I just didn't like that method of the map being on something physical. I could have seen maybe the map was scanned into Sam's g.father's brain  (like on Chuck, or Flight of the Navigator) and then he goes nuts and writes it all down in a notebook, or carves it out onto a stone or something, and have THAT be where the map ends up.

the only thing that bothered me about Trans 2 was.....Trans 2 XD

The main problem i have with both of these movies is that they never really set up "rules" of the magic beans. Most good sci fi set up the rules of their universe this one never ever bothers.

(if i may) By rules, do you mean what can/can't happen within the universe of the story or the fact that they don't tell you why/how the transformers exist (in terms of being autonomous, etc)

(& if i'm way off, please correct me)

See, Trey? =P

For the record, guys, I only saw it once, and didn't even finish, at that, because omfg the "script"... wasn't.

I got about to the scene where Bay made some poor vfx peeps spend 3 months doing that 3 second close-up (you know the one...) & that was it.
Shia ftw and shiny awesome CG ftw. (and yeah I get it, Megan Fox is hot and greasy looking) but....yeah.  Listening to the commentary actually kept me up way late because i couldn't stop laughing. XD

Hats off to the brilliant artists that are probably alcoholics by now after rendering countless frames of transforming robots, but If/when they make a Transformers 3: , please, for the love of whatever god you believe in, please let someone actually write an actual script. (and please don't let it be Transfomers 3...D)

/end rant

Thanks for another awesome commentary.

why this episode was good

I'm generally fascinated by making-of content and since i like DIF already, it's a bonus to hear some of the process that goes into making it; good and bad times. It's good that so much thought goes into what you do and that you're concerned with making everything better and learning from yourselves. You're all interesting (and hilarious) people, and that helps makes you enjoyable to listen to. I've heard other podcasts during which I want to punch my ipod lol

While your pov on a film is just that, it was cool that you reflected on how your views might have changed since a given podcast. In fact it's interesting, *during* a commentary, when any of you end up changing your opinion of a movie by the time you're done watching & analyzing it.

With Seth, it was cool that you'd brought (a listener) on and discussed his input as a listener. Also, since I don't personally spend a lot of time on forums in general, (and I mean at all) having a bit of feedback be part of the podcast was fun. In fact, it would be interesting if you incorporated feedback either into the podcast in some way, or maybe an occaisional podcast just to discuss feedback about a particular commentary & what you think about it. (That might not work, or it might end up being a good argument/discussion.) I know that's what the forums are meant for, but just a thought for the sake of bringing it up.

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts about the Oscars. You're all filmmakers and film lovers and it shows. You know what you're talking about and love what you're talking about, which again, keeps it interesting. You're not afraid to disagree with each other on things and It's cool hearing you guys all go off and speak your mind about everything.

why your podcast is good in general-

First off, I love commentaries. Whether fan-made, or "official", I love hearing people talk about movies. Your personalities all fit together and contrast well & I like the combination of Trey and the rest of you as far as the pov of 2 different generations of filmmakers. You always have a lot to say and it's smart & interesting & funny. It's also fun when you have Ryan, Eddie, etc on because they're also cool to listen to, & for when one of the "regulars" can't make it, it's a good alternate perspective. -  Aside from that, see my last comment ; )

I appreciate the time you guys take to do this stuff; It's fun and I always learn from it wink

Ok here's my first thought. Trey: Personally, I listen to all of these without watching the movies at the same time. Most of the movies I have seen, and some I've not seen, but I listen anyway. Why? 1- I like listening to you all talk about movies, and interact with each other with your various points of view. 2- If I've not seen a movie, hearing you guys talk about it helps me decide if I want to see it, in some cases. If you think it's really good, I'll check it out. If you think it sucks, I might check it out to see if I agree with you. Either way it's fun to hear you talk about it.  3- In the case that one of you you actually worked on one of the movies you're discussing, it's that much more fascinating to hear your thoughts on that making-of process. For example, The Abyss is one of my favorite films & getting that extra insight from Trey, who was on-set, makes it that much better. Your commentaries are always good; that part is just an added bonus.
-My next bit of feedback is coming soon.. ; )

Bo (cinebo) here. This is pretty slick. I just heard Dorkman's side-bar rant about Reloaded. If you have time/interest to do so, that would be kind of an interesting "bonus feature" to make available each week - he, or any of you, just going off on a movie/topic/etc for a bit.  ---  Also, it could just be my browsers, but on the bottom right of the main page, "hit the blog for info" looks to be cut off a bit. I can still make out what it says but yeah... Other than that, good stuff guys.
