New album by Esperanza Spalding (jazz-fusion bassist/vocalist) just dropped, and it's probably my favorite record of 2019 so far.
Oh man. Digging some of these posts and getting caught up in general. Music is weird. I've been out of the loop but diving back in and having fun with some new(er) artists.
Recently wanted to see what this whole Billie Eilish thing was about - and holy fuck - what a talent at only 17 years old. 17!!! I was so talentless at 17 that this is somewhat mindblowing (to be fair, her slightly older brother helps produce/write the songs, but even he's only 21(!)). Her new album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is fantastic.
First, the catchy tune:
Then, the slower one I love:
What else? Børns! This guy is awesome. Hipster as fuck but he makes good, fun music. Had his newer album Dopamine on repeat for most of 2018.
First, a popular song:
And the one I listen to the most:

This /really/ undersells just what he's managed to pull off. He's producing at a high professional level, with their stuff actually going to radio and beyond, from his wood paneled bedroom in their parents house, with Billie recording vocals sitting on his bed, and mastering on his desktop computer.
This is absolutely the future I was promised, these two managed to prove that you could bypass the entire old-guard system as an independent artist working out of your room. I'm still waiting for the day when all of the insanely talented artists I follow on youtube doing this exact sort of thing will be able to get the same sort of recognition. But the tides are changing, a couple years ago you never even would have considered that an artist like them would get radio play outside indie spotlights or some such.
These 2 are going to do some crazy cool shit as they get older, and I am HYPED.
Damn, great video BDA. Couldn't agree more about the "future I was promised" aspect of all this. Feels like the early exciting days of miniDV, final cut pro and going to town on videos that (eventually looked like garbage but had all the heart in the world). At least the technology part should hold up its end of the bargain from here on out. Fingers crossed that Finneas/Billie's Highland Park, CA world doesn't implode around them once the fame suffocates them both. (On an aside, this only furthers my belief that success always comes in twos (or more). A pairing that needs each other to be their best version of themselves.)
Always love the Triple J "Like A Version" sessions in Australia (from various artists). Found a good one of them both.

Billie Eilish's new album has been on regular rotation for me, it's so good.
Not a new song, but it's been giving me dem late-capitalist-climate-change blues recently. (Also Lorde was SIXTEEN when she wrote this wtf.)
Spending the afternoon trying to find as many wildly different variations on "In Walked Bud" as possible. For science.
I have an, lets say eclectic taste...
But I love these lyrics.
Unrelatedly - Zero Gravity.
My brother Pete is finally releasing music again. I can finally stop saying it's a work in progress!

The new shit is a Political Cowboy Breakup album called Wabi Sabi Gold Vol. 1
It's on all the streaming services.
Wabi Sabi Gold Vol. 1
2019 The Band Van Dog
I don't know if this counts as dubious. I'm in a band. We played covers. Then we made our own music.
This is the first time we performed an original song infront of a live audience.
It's called "Flesh/Wound", and falls in the hard rock category.
That's me singing.

Would be cool if y'all hit that like button. But only if you actually like it. If you click it and didn't, I'll know!
It's a blatant "Walk on the Wild Side" rip but I can't get enough of this song. That the music video is directed by one Paul Thomas Anderson doesn't hurt.
My god. Yep it is. Also. I quite like Haim. I'm a sucker for lady bassists. It's a thing. *Shrugs*
This entire album is on most music services, and I gotta say, the first three songs (Mad About Mad About Me, Turbulence, and Bright Suns) absolutely bump. Also, how had "The Dusty Jawas" never been used as a band name before?
In other other news, if you like spoken word, or more specifically rap, check out Watsky, sometimes billed at George Watsky. Originally a slam poet, now a rapper. I really like his All You Can Do and xInfinity albums.

check out Watsky
I definitely spent like a day and a half last week listening to Cardboard Castles on loop.
Okay, now that I'm home, and can actually listen to it, holy shit Ben, that is a proper BOP and a half.
Also, my recommendation, bouncing out what I said earlier: Cardboard Castles is such a fantastic album front to back, and the little conversations snippets with the 8 year old he put in as breaks are freaking adorable as hell.

My personal favorites off the album:
Also gonna throw in one of the albums I've had on repeat for the past while:
Basically if D&D had synths in-universe these are the sort of songs that would exist in-universe. This is my crack.
Not on point, but man, I've been watching all of these:

I bloody love Electric love
Saw the Who's Rock and Roll Circus performance shared on Twitter and was reminded that, while I'm nowhere near the rockist I used to be, live music objectively peaked with this song and it's been downhill ever since.

That was lovely.
I fall somewhere short of 'objectively-peaked,' but.
Mmf.
Hold on. Prepare for an edit.
EDIT: Skippin' a decade.
(I now realize this isn't exactly in the same spirit as your thing, but. ... Fuck it. Heart.)
Well that was goddamn great. (Also gotta love the screensaver-ass opening.)
EDIT IN TURN: Just to continue this great-live-performances thing, David Rawlings is an absolute demon.
