One of my faves is the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman - sometimes I put it on when I'm writing.  Generally ominous without being too bombastic.

Thanks for the recommendations, fellas. I'll incorporate those. Here's a (growing) list of atmospheric/ambient soundtrack excerpts... compiled from dozens of scores. Also added are a few Computer Game pieces, TV shows, ambient and classical. There's some duplicates as well, as movies like Shame and Thin Red Line used the same Hans Zimmer piece, The Mist and Baraka used the same Lisa Gerrard piece, as did Kingdom of Heaven and Hannibal, Kickass and Sunshine also share music. What's generally not here are vocal lyrics (except where abstract wailing) or action/battle music or dance/hip-hop music. Just a note: some of these are custom edited i.e. I've extracted a theme from a longer cue and renamed it accordingly.

...which I've just see in the list, carefully hidden under 'K'. D'oh.

It's more than a day's worth of continuous music, and there's always new tracks to be added as I rummage through old scores for similar material. The next two Hobbit scores should provide a bit too, and Nolan's Man of Steel might also provide some moody music.

The soundtracks for Sunshine (John Murphy) and Alexander (Vangelis) are among my favourites. Murphy's Adagio in D Minor/Capa's jump score is phenomenal (and sends shivers up my neck too).

Oh and Last of the Mohicans was pretty great too (Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman) - one of the first albums I ever owned (along with the Top Gun soundtrack).

Funny you should mention that. I'm just sifting through that now for the good stuff to add to 'The List'.

There are a couple of tracks in Trevor Jones' score for Excalibur that are good - the main theme being the one most probably remember (that rousing piece that plays as the titular sword returns to the Lady of the Lake).
