It's a really fancy game engine, off loading nearly all of the post work into pre production. PROGRESS!

Not really that new. Video-games have been doing this kind of live motion capture for a couple years now.
It happens to be a top-tier looking game-engine in this case, but it's still video-game cutscene level visuals. You're not gonna pass it off as photo-real, so all the headlines are misguided. It DOES mean the pre-viz process is going to be getting closer-and-closer to photo-real. I would love to see what Cameron's monitor looks like on Avatar 2.
