Topic: Legal-ish Question

I live in Chicago and a whole bunch of Occupy protests are happening on my block, so I've been grabbing some fantastic B-Roll of angry mobs and police on horses lined up in the middle of broadways and other really great stuff.  I figure that kind of thing could be useful for a zombie apocalypse short or something.

My question, now that I have this awesome footage, is whether or not I can even use it without consent forms.

Granted, they're all hippies and probably couldn't afford lawyers, but just in case...

BUT I'M A SYMPATHIZER!  Provided we're talking about getting corporations out of Congress and ending our effective plutocracy.  /Politics

Seriously though, some of those people couldn't even afford body wash.  Socialize deodorant, please.

Re: Legal-ish Question

I don't know about that side of the pond but in the UK it boils down to if you can see their face then no one is going to distribute your film but if its blurred out or covered then you are fine.

Re: Legal-ish Question

Generally, if you're not going to profit off of the movie you're okay.  There could be some issues if you show the film at a festival and someone recognizes themselves, but I'm not positive what they'd be able to do legally.  Anyone know more about this?

Re: Legal-ish Question

Shooting in the city without a permit is also on the sketchy side.  Handheld they won't stop you, but put it on sticks and they'll swarm.  If they think you're going to make money, they want their piece(s) of the action.  Not sure whether they have legal standing if they see obvious landmarks in for-profit work that they didn't approve.
