As someone who's never seen a Top Gun and only vaguely knows what it's about.... this honestly looked pretty good. It's straight up Jet porn and Tom Cruise being his charming Tom Cruise-y self, sure... but I'm not exactly opposed to that for another 2 hours.

Re: Cool Trailers

Yeah I'm sorry, no trailer will make me forget the Cats trailer for a while.

Put some dark ambient music under it, and you got yourself a body horror movie about the dangers of nuclear waste on the local cat population .

Re: Cool Trailers

I made sure not to watch Cats. I've watched Top Gun at least three times already. Thank you, Tom Cruise, for insisting so much of the jet stuff was done practically. That was 100% a practical carrier launch; someone said probably from an F/A-18B, which is a two-seat model.

EDIT: The only thing that bothers me is "... the only pilot to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years..." isn't a line that an Admiral would say. That's 100% a studio exec saying "our audience won't know what we mean if we say 'the only ace in the last 40 years,' so make it more obvious."

EDIT EDIT: I'm really curious, though, to see why when he's talking to Ed Harris, Tom Cruise is wearing a high-altitude suit. It shows up once more in a cockpit, but I can't ID the jet he's in.

From the very first DONG! it seems to a person who has seen a Top Gun that it's going to be pure Millenium Falconism from start to finish.  But maybe it's just the trailer?

My brother is sure that the entire movie (and also all of Cruise's crazy stunts up to this point) have been a ploy to get the Navy to give him a real fighter jet, so he could fly it into a volcano.  I guessing that doesn't happen though.

Was it weird for a pilot as young as Maverick to have seen any air to air combat at all when the first one came out in 1989. Interestingly, since he's still in the Navy (not being called up out of retirement or something) one can assume Maverick is a Veteran of not only the Gulf War, but also of the Global War on Terror?  But still, not many Navy air to air engagements in those conflicts either.  So Harris' character is talking about the F-5's he shot down in the end of the first movie. Weird line any way you slice it.

In 1989 the F-14 was barely 10 years old.  Today, it's retired (though strangely, one goes zooming into the distance in the final shot of the trailer), and the now ancient F/A-18 in all its variants hangs on because they're cheap, not because they're cool. (Don't get me wrong, I think they're very cool).  I'm betting Paramount thinks F/A-18s aren't cool enough, and they're hiding a big ole stealth space plane or some nonsense.

This should be the new level of plane-related discourse on this forum.

Re: Cool Trailers

The Witch absolutely shredded me, this got raves at Cannes, and I'll see Dafoe and Pattinson in anything, so color me hyped. (Also, this won't automatically make it good, but the fact that Eggers shot on 35mm black-and-white stock in the Academy ratio is eye candy.)

Re: Cool Trailers

Already a classic, because it looks like a fucking classic already.

I'm gonna have to wait for download/stream/blu-ray for that one, as I'm 100% sure the local cinema will never show it, but damn, that looks like it's right up my alley.

Re: Cool Trailers

For those who hadn't heard, Apocalypse Now is gonna be showing in IMAX in its new 4K restoration later this month. It's already one of the most staggering movies I've ever seen on a home screen, I'm sure in that format it'll melt brains. (This new "final" cut is a compromise between the comparatively lean theatrical cut and the bloated Redux cut—three hours instead of three and a half.)

Two-fer today—new Malick and Greta Gerwig's Little Women adaptation.

These and Episode IX all drop in December, which basically means I'm gonna be on cinema overload for three weeks straight.

Damn. Is A Hidden Life looking timely or what?

Also I'm down for even the 97th Little Women, given that cast tongue

Re: Cool Trailers

It suffers the same crap as the rest of the Disney remakes, too saturated, and the everything in frame is so digital it hurts, but otherwise, considering I had never even heard of this remake until about 5 minutes ago, I'm pleasantly surprised. Making it a fantasy adventure movie about the enigmatic and eccentric explorer Dr. Doolittle is 100% the right way to go for a remake. If they had tried to redo the Eddie Murphy version with a modern day take, it would have crashed and burned before it even hit the pavement.

But I'm curious... we'll see if they tone down the visuals before release, but I doubt it, but it might be worth a Netfli- ...Dinsey plus-ing.

Re: Cool Trailers

You know what? As long as he doesn't retcon Rey's parents, I'm okay. I get to experience this series I've loved since I was a kid one last time, and that's all I need. Give us hell, JJ.

Also, this looks absolutely STUNNING. Dan Mindel is pulling out all the stops.

Re: Cool Trailers

yikes CHILLS. Yeah man I cannot wait. Same with hoping JJ doesn't retcon her parents, but otherwise... man so much of this seems cool and new and exciting, and so much looks like awesome OT era stuff that we wanted more of. (A Y-wing doing cool maneuvers! The new crew piling into the Falcon's cockpit!)

Re: Cool Trailers

I'm beginning to get a little more confident that they won't retcon Rey's parentage. Thank goodness.
I *think* that Rey will be handed (by all the force ghosts) the mantle of "Skywalker" which will serve as an open caretaker of Force knowledge, rather than an exclusive "we're the only good guys" vibe of the Jedi order.

Here's hopin'

Also I'm looking forward to this, one way or another.

Re: Cool Trailers

Well, I am still sitting on a bet from four years ago, with Writhyn, that Rey's gonna turn out to be a Skywalker.

(Not because it'd be better for 'story reasons,' but because boring corporate storytelling chooses boring rhymes.)

I hadn't considered how much more likely that became when JJ took over. Homeboy will do anything with canon.

So.

Wasn't that bet time-based? Like, it was a "by star wars 8" thing. But if 9 pulls another turn, I'll happily pay back the $20 you sent me tongue

Re: Cool Trailers

If Rey turns out to be a Skywalker, I'll officially claim that John Williams warned us by building Rey's theme on the same structure as Luke's.
