I think my brain is just wired in this weird way where I specifically can't enjoy animated Disney files. Every single one I've tried to watch I mostly can't stand, except for maybe Aladdin. I'm certain it's me and not the movies, but I just cannot get past the kidiness and the songs. Not a new thing either, even as a 5 year old I'd prefer Alien/Predator or something to disney. I love Looney Tunes though, so it really is this weirdly specific thing. I suspect it's because Looney Tunes is more willing to play darker and more cynical, but I can't really articulate the difference.

Have you tried Hunchback? 'Cause in that one, the vilain's primary motivation is his uncontrollable urge to rape the female lead. Definitely not a kiddie movie, that film.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I've had a few on my list to suggest for a while now:

Minority Report
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II (If you can stomach it.  That's likely to be an entertaining bash-fest)
Street Fighter
Men In Black II
Batman Forever
Batman & Robin (oooooo boy lol)
Chronicle

There's a bunch of more dramatic movies that I would suggest...but I know that's not really DIF's thing.  Those would be a good direction to go in though if you guys ever wanted to pick a movie you can dig deep into the craft of storytelling over (not to say you haven't before but maybe dig even deeper).  While I enjoy the technical and purely entertaining commentaries, I really enjoy it every time conversations sway into the difficult craft of storytelling, structure, good dialog vs bad dialog, etc.  I would love to see you start doing more movies where they lend themselves to that sort of focus.

Re: Suggest a movie!

The Amazing Spider-Man? I only say this because I got it for Christmas lol Also it will be interesting to see what "The Boys" think about this compared to those other Spider-Man movies.

Re: Suggest a movie!

How about one of the Superman movies? This major superhero has been neglected by DIF so far. It's hard to use such a powerful character correctly, and yet he's popular.

Another classic that definitely deserves a DIF commentary is Blade Runner. It's got seven different versions to choose from...

Re: Suggest a movie!

this is an unusual request given the general age demographic of the DIF crew;  might I suggest you do Lawrence of Arabia.  Or maybe any other David Lean epic.  Just got done watching it.  Great movie!  it is on the long side, but it has an intermission and is well worth it IMHO.

+1

We've had lots of "going native" movies, but Lawrence is the best one I know (especially when compared to something as bland as Avatar).

Re: Suggest a movie!

Just saw The Town which makes me think Heat is the greatest crime movie of all time. How many times have other directors paid homage to it?

So my suggestion du jour is Heat. It's got the cast, the cinematography, the score, the action, the style, and the epic operatic scale.

not long to go now...

Trey and I LONG to do Heat on the show.  We actually discussed this the night at the bake off's when...we ate at the diner from Heat.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Yeah Heat really needs to be done. It's a fucking masterpiece, and hugely influential. I'm still blown away by how big it manages to feel, completely fleshing out 2 main characters, and like 5-6 side characters, without losing track of the story its telling. Also, extremely realistic, I've heard that some military instructors used the shot of Val Kilmer on the fly reloading his rifle in like 2 seconds and continuing to fire as an example to teach trainees how it should be done.

You watch a more recent heist flick like The Town, which had great reviews, and it's like "Wow, this is like Heat except none of the characters are as fleshed out or interesting, the action isn't as impressive, and it's smaller scale".

How about Iron Sky?

Re: Suggest a movie!

I'm afraid to even see it, at this point. I was excited five years ago, but the more I hear about it recently, the more I'm worried I'll hate the movie. And I know a lot of people who worked on that movie.

I don't wanna have to shit on it on the internet.  sad

Re: Suggest a movie!

I found Iron Sky to be unwatchable. I'm sure some folks worked really hard and did some great work on it, but it's a cinematic mess (and really quite awkward to watch).

You have my vote for Heat though. Perhaps you can do a double bill with The Town as avatar hints at above?

Re: Suggest a movie!

I haven't seen IRON SKY. I was at first interested in seeing it (and in the cinema.) Nazis on the moon? You have my attention.

But when a Sarah Palin impersonator showed up in the trailer I just said "fuck this shit". That's Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer humor...

Re: Suggest a movie!

I wouldn't mind seeing a couple more superhero movies..................Amazing Spider-Man and Dark Knight Rises as a double bill?

Or the really crappy ones i.e. Batman and Robin or Daredevil

I thin we should first focus on the proper way of making a Bond film before we jump to discussing how to fail at making one.
