I remember wanting to see this movie, and it had some buzz built up around it due to the very elaborate full-scale sets that were built and the fact that they were very guarded about the movie while it was filming. If they had released it wide in the states and advertised for it, it probably wouldn't have done that bad. It probably would have at least made it's money back.

I shall watch it tonight. I love you, netflix.

You'd think that companies like Apple, Sony, Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, Sprint, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Western Digital, LG, Samsung, Nokia, Fox Conn, Intel, RIM, Hynix and every other major and minor tech company out there would jump onto a big bandwagon and spread the word about how awesome going into space is, because all of the stuff we use today is either useable because of all the things we've put up into space already, or are based on tech that was developed to support sending giant-ass machines into space. Not to mention things like modern plastics and carbon-fiber which are used to protect all that glorious technology.

And then on top of all that awesome new technology that's just waiting to be figured out and exploited by top tech companies, you've also got the incentive of space and how fucking awesome it is. Knowing more about space is cool.

you don't see the kid cry until like ten minutes in. The thing that makes you stick around is the opening hook. "This is the most important video you'll ever see in your life! Dramatic ticking clock! We can make a difference! Stick it to the man!" They use every trick in the book in the first couple minutes. Then they have a crying kid. It's a brilliantly manipulative video. Micheal Bay should hire the guy to punch up his scripts.

That was fucking nuts and I loved every moment of it.

Damn. I guess I should have looked into it before posting that video. Seeing kids cry obviously has a measurable affect on my skepticism (and the people who made the video obviously know that...)

How was I to know, tho? It's on the internet. The internet is never wrong. NEVER!

also, for those of you interested in videogames and want to hear a really smart guy throw out a lot of information about what games are and what they could be and why he makes games the way he does:

Note: The second video is close to two hours long.

I shall be working on the day of the marathon, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to get off early, as it's overtime and it's not the sort of overtime where they'll need a billion people. The thing that pisses me off is that it's inventory and 9 times out of 10 when you're working inventory, you spend most of the day playing cards and dicking around waiting for something to come up that you have to do. I'm hoping that we can get most of it done by Friday and not have to endure two additional days of sitting around waiting for the suits to give us something to do. I'd rather spend my day watching the LOTR movies back to back than playing cards with people I don't necessarily like being around all that much.

it would be different if we could drink while we were playing cards, tho...

They're reviving the Ouija movie. They kicked McG off it, cut the budget down from $100 Million (!!) to $5 Million and word 'round the campfire is that they're looking to get the guys who directed the last installment of Paranormal Activity to direct.

The only thing about the news that shocked me was the fact that the Ouija Board movie had McG attached to it and a 9-figure budget. It makes me kinda wanna read whatever story idea they came up with that would have required that much cash to make it float.

if 21 Jump street ends up being a decent movie, then they need to murder whoever cut the trailer for it. It's one of the worst trailers I've ever seen. Cloudy with a chance of meatballs was pretty good, tho.

yeah, there are things about that movie you kinda have to ignore. I tend to forgive movies for most stuff so long as they provide me with some kind of reason. Like the rigging of the bridges... You could just assume the cops blocked them off so they could be swept for explosives, and in the time it took to sweep however many bridges and tunnels for explosives, a lot of people decided to just take the ferry. I really do like this movie, and I can watch it cause it's batman and it's a really good version of batman, but it's a popcorn movie. It's the sort of popcorn movie where they give you reasons for the improbable events - even weak reasons - and they set up some of it prior to it being a thing in the movie. That's more than most popcorn movies do, so I am lenient with flicks like this.

Goyer's writing career is kinda spotty, tho. He wrote "Dark City", but he also wrote "Kickboxer 2". He wrote batman begins (he has a screenplay / story credit, so maybe first draft?), but he also wrote "The Crow: City Of Angels". He wrote Blade 2, but he also wrote "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence". The guy's all over the place. I can't tell if he's a decent writer and the directors who work on this stuff suck, or if he's a crap writer and the decent directors can make his stories work. He has more misses than hits as far as I'm concerned.

I'm listening to it on your site right now, and I gotta say that Off The Cliff should be retitled to Off The Spliff. Serious reggae vibe coming off that tune.

Bob Marley would approve.

I like this as well. I'll probably add this to my 'work' playlist, cause it's the perfect sort of music to have on while painting or writing. Not intrusive but still has you feeling the beat and the vibe while you're working.

Thing is, if they would let the guys making the movie put together the marketing for the movie - or at least the trailer - then they'd probably end up with lots of awesome trailers. I dunno if they ever let the guys making the movies make the trailers, but it often doesn't appear that way, cause trailers are ususally just a mess of action shots and crap dialogue, give too much away, have no sense of "holy shit what's gonna happen next?" going on, etc. They usually don't answer the main question they're trying to answer which is "Why should I spend $10 and 2 hours to go see your movie?" If the answer you wanted was "We've got fights and group posing and special effects!" then this trailer pushed all your buttons.

I'm sure it will be at least in the above-average group of superhero movies, cause Whedon is good at making movies in general, and good at dealing with ensemble groups of characters who all have different personalities and functions and stuff. I'll bet you that Hawkeye is gonna go from "Who the fuck is that guy?" to "Holy shit, Hawkeye was my favorite character!" overnight. But the trailer is just a generic trailer. I dunno how it all works in the industry, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the same guy(s) cut the trailer for most of the other marvel movies in the last several years. They're all pretty much the same trailer.

edit

I thought of the Transformers films when I watched this as well. The vibe is made even stronger because they're literally ripping sound design from those movies and tossing it into the trailer.

I would buy some of those. Han Solo in carbonite popsicle mold. That's such a cool idea. I wouldn't mind having a game trophy version of Jar Jar. Of course, then I'd have to look at his stupid face all the time.

Speaking of star wars, have you guys ever heard of the "Machete Order" for watching the starwars saga?
http://nomachetejuggling.com.s3-website … ing-order/
Basically, you remove Episode 1 and watching them in this order: IV, V, II, III, VI
The guy gives a pretty good argument for watching them this way, and I'll probably try it the next time I feel like watching through all of star wars.

I remember seeing a deep-sea special about tubeworms that live near these deep-sea vents. They were in this little sub thing that was specially built to withstand tremendous amounts of pressure, with windows that were like 6 inches thick and the structure was reinforced in like 5 different ways and all this stuff. The guy piloting the thing was all "ok, we're going to get closer to the vents, but not too close, because if we get within X feet from the vent, our windows will melt and our sub will go from having 20 square feet of space to 2 in about half a second" and I was like "I will never ever do that ever".

James Cameron is braver than I. Space and deep sea exploration would scare the shit out of me. If I ever found myself suddenly in a deep sea sub or on a space station, I would probably spend a couple hours just pissing myself and vomiting before I had the nerve to look out the window.

I love the bit in the movie where she's like "Well, besides that guy, you came out of that bathroom..." and he's all "What? ME!?" and he panics and starts looking through his own bag. I kinda wish they had played that up a bit more, like there's something in his bag or on his person that kinda makes it look like he could have been the guy. I need a screw driver to get into the airvent. *search search search*. Oh, I just happen to have this sort of screwdriver on my swiss army knife that I happen to have on me right now. I also have this date marked and circled in my calendar for some reason. I wonder if that's the day I had planned to ask her out, or if that's the day I'll be doing the big exam, or maybe it's my sister's birthday or something, or maybe I'm the bomber.

One question: Why does this guy carry around his broken cell phone? Did it break that morning or something? That was kinda weird.

I liked this movie a lot. I'm with Trey in that the only really negative thing I can think of is the way they inject little bits of the future into the movie.

Also, if you look at the title card of the movie it kinda tells you what's up. On the left it says "Source Code". Then it gets underlined. The line, on the far right of the frame, forks off into two lines. I didn't even notice that the first time I watched it.

I've been slowly getting through a complete volume of HP Lovecraft. There's a lot of really good stuff in it that has nothing to do with the cthulu mythos. The cthulu/dagon/elders stuff is just so awesome, tho...

I'm sure there are thousands of these things that get close to being made and then get shelved because someone took a step back and said "whoa...  this really isn't gonna work at all, is it?" But we'll probably never know about most of them because they don't generally announce movies until they're in production or if the project is big enough (like superman or a sequel to something huge) for anyone to care about them that early.

Akira is a project that they keep not shutting down. It needs to die. They wanted Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt to play Tetsuo and Keneda, respectively. They're like 45. What in the name of all that is holy must they have done to the script that allowed for 45-50 year old versions of characters that are 15-18 in the books? Not to mention the weird "Americans playing americans with japanese names for no apparent reason" thing.

They gave Joss Whedon a truckload of money to make a comic book movie.

Part of me is totally excited about it.

Part of me is worried that he just climbed into the truck and jerked off all over the money.

The trailer is doing nothing to relieve those fears. But it does look cool as hell.

Perhaps. I propose a larger sample size. FOR SCIENCE!

V for Vendetta: social commentary $132 million worldwide.
Watchmen: social commentary $184 million worldwide.

I would say that both of them are arguably better overall movies than TDK as well. I think so, at least. TDK isn't an especially challenging movie when it comes to commentary. Like I said, I'm not even sure what side the movie takes. You could argue that the way it handles the social commentary is to provide an in-road for either side. "It's wrong to do this" "but it's necessary to do this". That's both sides of the issue right there. And the movie does both of those things.

As for the idea of society breaking down, at the end the movie says "the people have show you that they're not gonna stoop to that level!" The audience says "you're god damn right! We're awesome like that!", but earlier in the movie they had people shooting at and attempting to murder an unarmed man through a bomb threat. People are totally willing to stoop to that level that day. I think that movie sends mixed signals. It's far too busy being an engaging story about a crazy guy trying to make everyone else crazy along with him, and all the commentary stuff is just tacked on. You can basically ignore it and have the exact same movie at the end.

Spiderman 3: no social commentary $890 million worldwide.
Ironman 2: no social commentary $623 million worldwide.

Of course watchmen was also rated R and had a giant blue glowing penis in many parts of it, so the comparison of box office isn't necessarily fair.
