In the vein of the "Give it a season..." thread, I picked up the Final Cut DVD when it came out, having never seen it, on the basis that it was one of those films you "had to see."  I liked Ridley Scott enough, and the set came with the other 3 major releases, so I figured what the heck.  For the first half dozen times I kept falling asleep; I had to force myself to finish it.  Then I went back and watched the other versions.  For a good two weeks I watched nothing but Blade Runner, and developed an appreciation for it, but that's about as far as I go.  I will say that if you're someone serious about their sci-fi you can't ignore it forever.

That is so weird, I was thinking of re-watching A Few Good Men just yesterday.

Holy crap!  I was thinking as I was watching it "That guy looks like one of the guards in Chronicles of Riddick...*" but I figured you had just gotten fellow / local students.

One niggle that bothered me is the graffiti on the columns.  It kind of pops me out of the world.  I like the editing with the knife gag though.  Overall looks good, well done.  Looking forward to the next iteration.

When people say "give it a season," they're telling you that even if the pilot doesn't make you jump out of your chair and start licking your monitor, you should stick around because it's worth it.

Because they've seen it.

How much does it piss you off, Teague, that I refuse to watch Firefly because the first episode bored me so much I shut it off in about fifteen minutes?

That's kiiinda what you're cheering for right now.

It took me a while to warm up to Firefly as well.  I must have fallen asleep half a dozen times trying to make it through the pilot.  But, I'd spent the money on the discs, and people kept raving about it, so I stuck with it.  I'm glad I did.  I can't say the pilot is my favorite episode though.  It's lacking in some of the humor the evil network insisted on for the replacement pilot, and indeed the rest of the series.  Sometimes the networks do know what they're doing.  Sometimes.

The DAVE School got me a job. Represent.

Just sayin.

1. Not that your ego needs the stroking sir, but you are very good at...pretty much anything you decide to put half an effort into.  Talent goes a long way.

2. I was sold on DAVE back when you and Brian discussed DAVE vs. Full Sail in the Geekza days.  I even flew down for a weekend  to check the place out.  I would have preferred DAVE; it's a shorter than the Full Sail program, about half as expensive, and I really like the "Block" organization of the program.  But... since it's really more of a training program, and not an accredited educational institution, financial aid was a problem.  There was simply no way I could come up with $30k, cash or credit, so that pretty much put DAVE out of reach.  I'd still like to go if I ever came into some money, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

That said, I can't complain too much about the Full Sail program.  I don't imagine a degree will actually make a whole lot of difference when it comes to getting a job (another reason I wasn't bothered about the DAVE program), but there is certainly benefit in a more rounded education.  Anyone with a degree feel free to set me right, but from what I understand my greatest assets starting fresh out the gate are going to be my demo reel, and the people I know.

Eddie: Thanks for the tips sir.

HOW THE FUCK DOES THIS INDUSTRY MAINTAIN ITSELF?!?!?!  mad

No kidding man.  Sure there are internships, which can lead to an actual job, but most are unpaid, and many are "for school credit only."

Y'know how I got my first AE job?  Lies.  Straight up deceit.

I learned how to tape load on the job after I got it.  I needed and wanted that job, and I knew I was sharp enough to figure it out, and i did.  I make no apologies.  Neither should you.

See, I'm fine with that.  I can accept that a degree of B.S. goes along with applying for a job (and I recall Teague's advice of "Lie within your means"), but I'd feel better if I knew how much I could get away with.  I know there are all kind of resources for writing a killer resume / cover letter, but I'd really love to find class taught by someone who has actually spent a fair bit of time looking at them.

Maybe Full Sail has some kind of resume writing workshop or something; there's certainly no class in the curriculum entitled "So here's how to actually go about finding a job doing what you've just spent a lot of time and money learning."

I'm cautiously enthusiastic, but having read the book and seen the original Swedish film, I have my doubts.

Edit: I may just have to catch the Sherlock Holms sequel just for Noomi Rapace though.

The Fast and The Furious is not a "crass piece of work."  The sequel I have no great love for, but the most recent three (and a fourth / sixth on the way) with Justin Lin at the helm have a lot of heart.  Even the first one is dealing heavily with family issues when it isn't warping time and space in a quarter-mile.

Sure the depiction of cars isn't accurate, but who wants that?  Cars in movies are just like guns and computers and who knows what else; people expect certain things from them, regardless of how they would work in reality.  That's ok.  Drifting sideways through an intersection is no way to go fast, to say nothing of being unsafe, but put it in a movie, and I'm having a great time.  Sure it's gratuitous; that's the point.

Nice!  I've been wishing we had a modding system for a while now.  Actually I'm with Trey, and partially with Zarban.  If we're going to call it Karma, the system really should work both ways.

I'm all for electric mobility, but here's my problem.  Our current model for the car goes like this; drive until you need fuel, re-fuel, continue driving, repeat.  This allows us to do things like drive cross country over the period of several days, and several re-fuel stops.  This is simply not possible with the electric cars we have now.  They may have enough juice to get you to work and back, but no one will be visiting their distant relations in them anytime soon.

IMHO, all the hybrids out there are the real stopgap, because they still run on gasoline.  They use less, sure, but even if you learn to drive them properly you're still only going to use about half that of a normal car.

As for the electric cars we do have now, let's not forget that power has to be generated somewhere and we're already having trouble generating enough power to meet our needs worldwide.

What about pleasure?  I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume whoever has lent their voice to this thread enjoys driving on some level.  While I won't deny that driving something like a Tesla would indeed be a joy, I think we're a number of years from that being a realistic reality for the masses.

When we get to the point were Tesla like levels of performance are readily available and affordable, and they can be recharged in about the same time it takes to fill a tank of gas, I'll be right there.

@Brian: I like your thinking.  Don't forget the 6,831 laptop batteries though.  They've gotta go somewhere, and you can't just stash them all in the trunk.  Unless...you can also integrate the Hydrogen fuel system from a Honda FCX Clarity.  Now that would be pretty darn cool.

"Set partly in the future..."?  The Air Force has frickin' Transformers in that ad!

*Off topic military advice follows:

For the record, anyone thinking of joining a branch of service here's a tip: go Air Force.  Whether you're just looking to do a few years to get some college money, need some water to tread in for a few years, or you genuinely want a career, Air Force is the way to go.

Unless you really love the water (and loud confined spaces and no privacy), or you want to go special ops (SEALs), or the idea of landing an F/A-18 on an aircraft carrier in the dead of night in the rain appeals to you...then by all means go Navy.

If you just want to be a badass, nothing says badass like USMC.

Unless you want to go special ops (Ranger, Green Beret, Delta), or fly helicopters, there's really nothing compelling about the Army.
