Hey, since its something we've been talking about a lot lately (Webseries thread and others) I thought it might be prudent to have a place to amass the great short films. So instead of having to dig through the cool vids thread or others we can just come here for some inspiring or interesting short films.

I'll kick things off. Hopefully this works for you folks outside Canada...if not...well...too bad.

Owen asked: When was the last time you performed onstage and why haven't you performed since?

This is kinda weird to answer. So the technical answer is alomost 3 years to the date. I was in a performance of Alice In Wonderland done by Central Alberta Theater here in Red Deer, we performed June 2009.

That's me!! (Backstage) \/

(If you can't tell what part I played...even I can't help you)

The trickier answer is a couple months ago. The Vancouver Theater Sports League has this new thing where basically they invite a bunch of people on stage and they do improv games and such, and the audience picks thier favorite, and the winner gets 20 bucks and then gets to perform with the professionals in the second half of the show. I performed, but didn't make it past round one /tear/ So I technically performed there, but it's not the same as being on an improv team, or rehearsing and performing a show.

And why I havn't, is for some gods forsaken reason I went off and did 24 months solid of film school immediatly after I finished Alice In Wonderland (Literally, Alice closed, and three weeks later I was in Vancouver.) And then I was unemployed for a while, and vancouver...isn't exactly... the easiest place to just walk into an audition, it has a very closed loop, incestuous, system for theater.

And then I got the job at LookFX, and even thinking about theater had to take a back seat, and then when I ended there, I was going broke again, and now I'm in Red Deer. Where I had an audition last sunday for a smallish theater/improv troupe in town. So I have my fingers severly crossed that I can get into that.

Teague asked: "What do you hope for out of your Minecraft series? What's the ultimate success on that front look like?"

Ultimately, long term, aside from just having fun and killing time (Which I'm already achieving), I'd like to be able to have enough people like what I do and watch my videos regularly enough* that with the money made from ads and the like I could have some sense of financially stability and have the ability to excise any sort of job that I don't love doing. So basically, my life would be making minecraft (or other LP videos) for my channel and having the rest of the time to focus on the movie I want to make or on whatever project catches my eye, without having to worry whether I'm going to be able to both eat and pay my rent this month. And if I can't get that, at least having a small but steady-ish source of income from something I love doing would be awesome.

In an ideal world.

*Reading this whole thing back I thought I should clarify something. I'm absolutely not doing this for money, I would be retarded and beyond the help of any doctor if I actually thought that would work. I love doing videos, I love knowing that people are watching them and enjoying them. And if for some gods forsaken reason, enough people actual like what I do and keep watching, then the prospect of doing it for money emerges, which would be amazing. But even if that never happens, I'll still make videos, until it isn't fun anymore.

This would also make an interesting web series.

Hmm, a biopic about myself? Never thought about it before, could be interesting...I mean I'll probably run into a few legal snags and more than a few uncomfortable questions from families of missing persons. But it could be interesting.

Screw it, I'm throwing my hat in the ring. But I'll warn you right now, I am a notoriously boring individual when not hunting for ancient relics or fighting space aliens. So ye have been warned.

Hi I'm BDA, Chris to non internetz people. I'm a visual effects artist and aspiring indie filmmaker. I graduated from Vancouver Film School last year, and have had one studio gig and a couple freelance things since then, but nothing to truly write home about. I also adore theater and improv, performing and viewing. I have performed on stage since I was a small child and miss it dearly. I like to dip my toes into a lot of things, photography, history, sewing, life, the universe, and a little bit of everything when I can. I have a Youtube series where I play minecraft and other games and talk over them, it's all very silly, but it keeps me from biting the heads off small animals.

AMA.

Unfortunately all my dvds are still at the bottom of a rather large box covered in assorted junk. I can get you a very nice picture of the box though.

Should I feel dirty about that second sentence, or do you think it was necessary?

Personally without the second sentence I would have assumed you were one of those that thought that because we have the ability to self reflect, we were awesome. Namely because you start the first senetence by saying "The cool thing about humans..." and never imply any sort of chastising for thinking that way, which you do in the second sentence.

So yes, I think the second sentence is crucial to making the point.

So as this has been something I've been struggling to figure out and work on for the last few days, Teague suggested I throw up a thread for the DiF Community at large to contribute, and I agreed, and well, here we all are.

This all started largely because, as it turns out, I'd never had anyone really properly explain what a resume should be or what a cover letter should be, when you're working in this type of industry. And I figured since we are a community of largely filmmakers and visual effects artists, that it would be a good resource to have around for general advice, or for people to ask for help with their resumes/cover letters.

So basically, what are visual effects houses looking for when they open up that file marked "Resume" and see your name at the top? Do's. Don'ts. Regional differences. What should go in the resume, what should go in the cover letter. Tone. Tips for jobs that aren't film based. Anything else you want to add really.

As first sacrifice for anyone that wants to give more direct advice. I present my current resume. (The white spot at the top is where my phone # would go... removed for obvious reasons.)

Please rip it apart, dissect it, tell me how to fix it.

If you can solve the problem of interstellar space flight, you've already reached the level of technological sophistication to solve environmental/resource problems,

Not to derail the thread, but I don't see how A follows B. I mean look at the history of Nasa, we wanted to go to the moon so bad that we hacked and slashed and cobbled together the best that we could to get there. But we still haven't actually really solved much of anything on earth.

If somehow we had the same level of incentive to get to another solar system, that same level of directed, blind to everything else, focus could be set up. And if so, that probably means that the resource/environmental problems would get worse, because it take s a shitton of both to get the problem solved of going where we want to go.

So I just don't think that one automatically means the other.

Anyways, continue the thread where we left off.
