It's about time David Cronenberg got into the consumer electronics biz.

Mmm, cake.

His Baby's Day Out and Star Trek (09) reviews are pimp too. I respect a man who likes Star Trek: TMP, even if he does have a ho tied-up in his basement (don't we all?).

Don't forget us little people! I'm available for Hanger On duty on the UK tour. And if that's the same 'mrjohnrain' i thought was a spambot in the Creations thread: oops, sorry dude.

But seriously, it sounds like he needs to hear some better dvd commentaries. There are a lot of good ones.

Long live DiF.

Holy crap, that's... an eclectic list there vidina. Maybe you should speak with Councellor Troy (nevermind, you'd just wanna do her too). smile

1) 1984
The early 80s had some depressing movies. This is one of the worst. The rat cage (containing 2 very non-CG rats) on John Hurt's face at the end is the cherry on top.

2) Out of This World
Brutal alien slavers, dangerous animals, gladiatorial games. Not a nice place. There's a speedrun here.

3) Zardoz
The towns are ok but the countyside, not so much.

4) Stalker
By Tarkofsky. The city looks like a rundown, dirty factory and everyone's seriously depressed.

5) Videodrome
Toronto. What a shit hole.

BTW, where's Jeff? I'm getting nervous with him still 'marked for disposal' by Skynet. Remember, move around at night. As a last resort, if it gets too bad i can liberate you with my truck.

Anyways, here's why I think the series will work in 3D.

Good points. I've only seen a little bit but i'm not a 3D fan. It's too early right now anyway.

Article: "Despite the fact that I could get it working well on four of the six Blu-ray 3D Discs available to me, producing the sterling 3D images described above, it wasn’t entirely free of glitches on any of them."

And that's an expert using an $85,000 projector.

I don't know why anybody's surprised by the 3D thing. Star Wars is Lucas' ho and it's gotta earn. There were even multiple releases on the niche laserdisc format. 3D is now what HD was a few years ago, in a few years it'll be something else.

edit: Oh, i just read Teague's blog. I thought it was being released on 3D bluray. Silly me.

Fun interview. I love her voice.

I suggest that Dorkman should scan the Cinefex's and turn them into PDFs. I'd love to read them. Or has some website already done that?

I loved this movie. I thought Rockwell was awesome; a speak-before-you-think guy and sometimes subtle acting at the same time. I could've used a bit 'more' story, i guess. It's great that it was made for only $5m.

Compare it to Gentlemen Broncos which cost twice as much, also has Sam Rockwell and is terrible, and has only made $100,000 back so far. Yeowch! (I'm still glad i saw it though, it has a few good bits - watch till the end of the credits).

1) Blood: The Last Vampire. Pretty good anime but i felt ripped off. The back cover says 'feature 90min'. I get home it's actually a 46min movie and a 45min making of. Grr.
2) The Matrix. My first dvd. I got this one in spite of the snappy case thing, which i don't like. I think they're extinct now.
3) THX-1138. Very simple design. Nice.
4) The X-Files (all of it plus the first movie). A thing of beauty. 61 DVDs.
5) To Live and Die in LA. Nice, modern cover. I got the impression they put some effort into the release.

Next,

Back in the day, before i saw Alien, my school had a book sale and on one of the tables was Alien: The Illustrated Story by Archie Goodwin and Walter Simonson. It only cost $1 and i'd never seen a comic like it. It was obviously for adults, had the f word, was big (magazine sized), had cardboard covers and glossy colour pages.

The chest burster comes out of Kane in a normal panel at the bottom right and i thought that's it, then i turn the page and it's 2 full pages of exploding blood out to the edges... whoa. And it had those scenes that were cut from the theatrical release. I used to think it was better than the actual movie. How this thing ended up in a small French-Canadian high school with 'UK £2.50 Australia $7.95 New Zealand $7.85' printed on the back, i'll never know.

Another great one was Six From Sirius - but that's another story.

Top 5 comics (not a whole series) you remember fondly. C'mon Trey!

That's not fair, i had to find it the hard way. As Tom Noonan sez in Heat, "They beam this stuff all over the fucking place."

And there's no way this is on netflix (which just opened it's free streaming thing in Canada today, too bad the selection is really small).

This is off topic now but i watched the animé version last night and... holy crap i loved it! I was surprised by how raunchy it was. If i hadn't read the wiki article first i wouldn't have understood the story, and it ends halfway through (like the animated LotR), and it's misogynistic but i still liked it. Maybe it was the novelty of a genre i hadn't seen animated before. Kinda like The Maltese Falcon but really hardboiled.

why waste theirs and our time hamstringing it with a PG-13 rating?

Yeah, it's stupido. Why appeal to 13yr olds who're never going to go see a Wall Street movie anyway?

I was going to say 'why put that Shia kid in the movie' but he's actually 2yrs older than Charlie was in Wall Street. I forget how young he was in Platoon, etc. Shit, the internet says he did 23 movies in 5yrs starting in 1985. Well, he's 3wks older than me so i get to call him old guy.
