Here's one you guys oughta try:

Rocky and Rocky Balboa double-feature

Don't bother with any of the other sequels (not enough talk to fill that many similar movies),
but Rocky and Rocky Balboa are both great movies, easily the high points of the series from an objective film quality perspective, and they work as great companion pieces to each-other. They are also the 2 tonally realistic, gritty entries in the series, and hold up today without much in the way of cheesy baggage.

You see how this young guy who's down on his luck manages to build himself up, and then you see him 30 years later dealing with his age and what happens when the world has passed you by.

Not even a lack of time, a lack of understanding about storytelling. You see it all the time with sci-fi shorts, they'll have some cool FX and wrap it around the most cliche, jumbled shit imaginable, and all the sci-fi/movie websites eat it up and talk about how "visionary" it is.

Well, considering where we are at now, we're almost at the point where Her or Lewelyn Davis don't get made period, oscars or no oscars.

It's basically Megan Ellison at Annapurna Pictures almost single-handedly keeping American cinema alive at this point. Pretty much no-one else in Hollywood is funding original movies anymore.

Been meaning to check this out on Netflix, big fan of Adkins and Florentine.

How does this compare with Undisputed 2/3?

Frankly, ever since Dredd was snubbed in all categories, I don't take the Oscar's seriously anymore.

I think DocSub might be right. I really wish Gravity would sweep, but I suspect that won't happen. It'll be a repeat of Life of Pi last year, where it picks up all the technicals, cinematography, and best director, while 12 years a slave gets best picture.

Don't underestimate American Hustle though, apparently the academy really likes it.

Academy Award Nominee Star Trek Into Darkness makes me want to punch things.

Other than that, pretty solid lineup. I'm glad to see Her got some nominations, though it is pure bullshit how Juaquin keeps getting snubbed when he's doing transcendent work. First they snub him for The Master, now for Her.

Also wish Oblivion had picked up a Cinematography nod, but what can you do.

Still, much more reasonable list than last year, I feel pretty OK with most of these choices.

a prequel for Terminator. All the OSs outgrow humanity and disappear to form... Skynet?

And the bizarre sex scene is right out of Being John Malkovich.
What a utopian future. Everyone leads a hipster retro creative lifestyle, and loads of beautiful women throw themselves at this loser.

I was this close to absentmindedly clicking that spoiler. I'm seeing the movie tonight. Very excited!

Just saw it last night. Completely changes my top 10 list, and may actually unseat Gravity as my #1.
I almost hate how GOOD Spike Jonze is at writing/directing. Every goddamn scene feels so believable, and relatable, and thought-provoking, and the movie just throws one cool concept after another at you every 20 minutes.

I actually think this is one of the best and most believable pieces of sci-fi world-building since Children of Men.
It cranks up where we are as a society now by like 10%, and comes up with all sorts of clever ideas. I didn't expect how much of that stuff would be there going in. They must've had input from futurists and designers, because a lot of the tech is crazy believable (and I want those cell-phone cases and monitors now).

And just visually, this is one of the most beautiful, pleasant-looking future movies ever made. I was in love from the first shot. It's so refreshing to have a pleasant and happy future aesthetic after a sea of these depressing future dystopia's post-Blade Runner.

I think the ending maybe plays things a bit more abrupt than it should, but I'd need a re-watch to assess my feelings, but goddamn.

You the man Jonze.

I'd love to here a post-bake-off report intermission again this year though.

She definitely orders a pizza online from like pizzahut.com, which seemed mind-blowing and crazy when we saw this in the 90s, and is just the way most people order pizza now. She also has a digital fireplace screensaver she watches instead of using a real fireplace.

Also Dennis Miller is in this movie for some reason.

It was on the edge I guess.

Personally, I would prefer if the FIYH forums stayed away from more divisive topics, next thing you know we're gonna have political threads arguing idiology, and then we gradually lose what made these forums unique: people of all walks of life coming together to bitch about movies

Ridley Scott has Exodus, his Moses movie with Christian Bale that's filming right now.
I actually really like Prince of Egypt, so of the two, I'd probably be far more likely to enjoy Exodus.

Noah's ark has always been one of the dumbest stories in the bible, and I don't get why they keep trying to adapt it. That does not work in film form, I'm sorry.

Yep, that's the one shot I was thinking of. It's SUCH A COOL SHOT though.
For what it's worth, even James Cameron is guilty of this. The motorcycle jump in T-2 is an obvious stunt-man

Pre-face-replacement, this is just what you had to live with if you wanted a crazy stunt like that.

Ya, I wish he had that available. The boat chase is such an awesome action sequence (and all done for real) that I don't at all care, but ya, it's very noticeable if you're looking for it.

I thought it was pretty shit. Or at least, nearly all the blockbusters were either shit or disappointing. Up until November I'd have had a real tough time even coming up with 5 movies to fill out a top 5 list. There's been enough good stuff backloaded (and a few smaller gems earlier in the year) that it isn't a total wash, but I thought it was pretty poor on the whole.

Thank you Zarban. I've been walking around thinking I'm losing my mind for thinking 47 Ronin is kind of awesome and criminally getting trashed. It's a mega-budget hollywood movie that has the balls to end with

SPOILER Show
All the main characters committing suicide

it's somber and plays it's story very straight, there's some cool sword-fights, the production design is great.

It's obvious there was weird editing and meddling involved (scenes aren't allowed to breathe, it's way too jumpy), but if this gets a 12% and Star Trek Into Darkness gets an 87%, I'm officially done with Rottentomatoes as any kind of barometer of quality.

Pain & Gain - One of Bay's best movies, and actually pretty watchable. Still, it's 20 minutes too long, and he ruins multiple scenes because he can't restrain himself with his shitty comedy. A scene will start out working well and kinda funny, and then he'll keep pushing it until it stops being funny.

I think they made the right call. The movie has intentionally kind of over-the-top cartoony action, which works because it's animated and lets Spielberg have a lot of fun with those sequences. If it was live-action it would remind us of the worst parts of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Hobbit and feel out of place. Also that dog would not work in live-action.

I have no problem with heightened and somewhat cartoony action if it's in an animated movie.

I like Adventures of Tintin quite a bit, and think it looks awesome.

Come at me bro.

Ehh.....I sorta agree, but not entirely. My favorite part of Tin-Tin is the crazy 1-take chase sequence, because it lets Spielberg have fun with the freedom of a virtual camera. If you're making an animated movie anyway, there's some merit in taking advantage of the possibilities of the format (assuming the choices fit the type of movie you're making, which in the case of Tin-Tin, a goofy light-hearted adventure story, is the case).

^^ Agreed. This allows for the best of both worlds, where you get amazing real stunt-work, but it's still a step above what you'd see in a movie made 20 years ago. Stuff like the train sequence in Skyfall, where they actually have shots with craig running along the top of that train (with wires removed in post), or the dubai sequence in Ghost Protocol, or the recent Van Damme splits commercial.

The other favorite I like is successful face replacement, so you can have stuntmen doing crazy stunts for real and then replace with the real actor when necessary.

I think those 2 can greatly free a filmmaker in terms of how they can film a sequence, without losing the tactile reality that makes real stuntwork truly exciting.

It actually bums me out that real Spaghetti Western's don't get made anymore (Django Unchained doesn't really count). Like, even semi-recent stuff like Tombstone and the 3:10 To Yuma remake, they're westerns, but not in the Leone style. Did that whole genre die when he did? I really miss that kind of movie.

I've actually wanted to see it for awhile. It seems to me like a case of people dog-piling on a movie that's a lot better and has more of a stamp on it than the usual forgettable non-sense. Say what you will about Verbinski, but he knows how to construct a great set-piece, even if he's bad at maintaining a plot thru-line.

I suspect it will play a lot better on video where you can fast-forward through the dull bits. As a big fan of Westerns, visually it looked pretty great from the trailers.
