So however they decide to have Smaug articulate his words, there's going to be cheating involved.  However, now that mocap is so much easier to use, there's no reason NOT to put your actor in a suit and let him have at it, even if you haven't a clue how or if you'll do anything with that data.

This. Thank you. That's the mindset I had. Even if there's a chance you end up throwing away all the data, there's also a chance it could vastly improve the end product. So why not?

Though I'm sure they've already done an enormous amount of testing and are at least somewhat confident about their methods at this point.

The Smaug mo-cap is the least of my concerns. I do wish they'd give those saturation dials a break. The colors in every shot in the first one looked unrealistically beautiful and perfect. Kinda took me out of it.

It CAN be a ridiculous idea if used incorrectly.    It can also be really useful if used properly.   Just like everything else.

Yeah, I mean of course they're not gonna try to use all of his entire body's movements to map to the dragon's body. I figured they'd use it to help mostly with facial subtleties and stuff like that.

But who knows.

Just got this on DVD. One of my favorite childhood movies.

Just got back from seeing this a second time in IMAX.  God, it looked awful.  I think they just mastered this in 2K, transferred to 70mm, and then shot it across a 6-story screen.

That's weird, they shot with IMAX cameras. Kinda defeats the purpose.

Khan designed the torpedoes that were secretly hiding his people to also blow up if anyone actually used them as torpedoes?   smile

.... Maaaaaaybe... Maybe he had to make them actually work because they had to test them!

Haha there can be justifications for everything I guess. Truth is I personally didn't think about that once when I was watching, or after. I won't knock people for taking issue with it though.

Before I even start thinking about that - I'm still trying to figure out how

SPOILER Show
you can put a frozen human and their cryotube into the shell of a torpedo, nearly filling the interior - and somehow still have room for the explosive charge so it still works as a torpedo.

Apparently those torpedoes have loads of empty space in them, in case you need to hide a person or your CD collection or whatnot.

  Show
Khan designed the torpedoes, so I assumed he designed them for that purpose. And he can fit whatever he wants into whatever space he wants because he's Khan and he's super-intelligent like that smile

Great googly moogly! Raw video from the 5D Mark III. The folks at Magic Lantern have outdone themselves this time. the 5D3 has now become a camera that can compete with/outperform about any camera below $20,000. Plus it takes fantastic 22MP stills.

His one-night stand got killed because the writers decided to kill her off, and that's how they decided to do it.

He needs the suit at times because it's an Iron Man movie and he needs to get into kerfuffles that cause him to need the suit.

We might be thinking about this too hard.

Yes, I'm not saying $600/yr is unfair for what you get. I just don't need all that, and I haven't had to pay that much to use the few apps I need in the past. CC is a great deal for lots of people, but it's more than I need and costs more than I can pay.

I wish they'd offer certain packages for a lower monthly cost, and not just one for $20 or all for $50. It's a good value for the Master Collection, but maybe I only need what was in the Production Premium package, and I used to upgrade for around $600 every 2 or 3 years for that. Now I gotta pay $600 every year...

I'm not a pro, I'm not dependent on this software, I just use it cause it's useful. And I personally can't justify paying $600/yr just to be able keep using it. I guess I'll stick with CS5 for a while. I use FCPX for editing anyway, and PS and AE CS5 are good enough for me at the moment.

His resourcefulness couldn't even help him escape from some cable ties. The suit literally flies in to the rescue like a D.E.M. not once but several times.

One could almost say he was very resourceful in summoning the suit. One could also say that he was resourceful in advance to have built such a suit, in case he were ever to find himself in such a predicament.

The way I see it, if the suit is the hero then Stark is also the indirect hero. He built it. He used his resources and his super-dee-duper brain power. He fashioned himself an amazing tool, and only he could have used it in such a way that would help him save the day and his own life on all those ridiculous occasions.

I thought the end of Avengers kind of marked a bit of a turning point in his narcissistic ways.

I've seen some good points in this thread. I generally liked the movie, but there were some little things that bothered me. Here's a couple, and I don't know if these have been posted yet (they are kinda nitpicky...):

1) I get how Aldrich Killian went from gimpy and wrinkly to buff and handsome, but how did that dweeb become so suave and socially competent?

2) The lack of security in that world astounds me. So Iron Man can just park his suit filled with guns and explosives outside a corner restaurant and it's cool, no big deal.

And even worse, Rhodey's suit just swoops in out of the sky in front of Air Force One (about 2 feet in front of some secret service guys, who hardly even flinched), the president gives him a wave and they hop on board just like that. No sort of identification needed, let alone simply showing his face... Plus why would he be allowed on an aircraft with the president while wearing such a dangerous weapon? Even if it was Rhodey, what if he accidentally nudged the wrong way and, I don't know, blew a hole in the side of the plane? They'd never let that thing on AF1, no matter who was manning it.

Also, how did the military not catch those choppers closing in on Stark's house? I mean they had to be on serious watch after he made his little message to the Mandarin.

But as I said, I generally liked it. Some cool action (albeit technically impossible most of the time) and plenty of good laughs. RDJ is a beast.

Okay, I agree that going to Mars would be cool. But if I had to stay there for the rest of my life I think it would get pretty old pretty quick. Earth is way more interesting, we've just been here our whole lives. I'm sure if I spent a good few years walking around experiencing Mars I'd be begging to come back by the end of it. I can't imagine spending a lifetime there.

Imagine if we were from Mars, planning a lifetime trip to Earth. Now THAT would be something.

Even if this could happen safely, with very few health risks, who on this awesome planet EARTH would want to spend the rest of their lives on MARS? It might be cool for a few days, then I'd wanna go home. I don't wanna live in a box with nothing to do for the rest of my life.

On the other hand, this facility could become a completely inescapable, really really expensive galactic prison. I can see it now...

"You are hereby sentenced to life... ON MARS."

"NO! JUST KILL ME NOW, PLEASE!!!"

Hmmm.... I think Magic Bean Talk flows better than Magic Beans Talk. Plus the idea is that it's generally okay for a movie to have just one magic bean. Is that right?

Or just The Magic Bean, without "talk."

EDIT: Oh wait... I see. Magic Beanstalk... I'm an idiot.

I was looking at cameras about a year ago and it was between the GH2 and the Sony NEX-5N. I went with the 5N, and I'm very happy with it, but I must say I do really like the look of the GH2. Are you considering hacking it?
