I think that was a great writeup, Teague. I know at least his sister and 12-year-old niece are nerdy, so I'm sure they'll get it. If anyone else would like to post on the funeral home link, I think that would be cool.

Christopher F. Mack, AKA Invid Fan. Born September 23, 1969, and died July 21, 2016.

It's a bit strange to use the word "friend" here, since I didn't know much more than this: he was a writer, he liked movies, and he was an uncle. We debated the role of characters in stories, and agreed that Fury Road and Inside Out were good movies.
But, in some small way, he was my friend. He was our friend. He made well over a thousand posts in this little forum, most of which were before my time. From skimming through them, there were lively debates, awful jokes, and worthwhile conversations.

And when I did some snooping and found out he was dead, it hurt. So yes, Invid was a friend. He was willing to open up and let us know when life was not going well. Friendship has many shades, but is rarely deeper than when sharing vulnerabilities. So I believe he considered us friends as well.

Therefore, my friend, we will miss you. And though I wish I could say we will always think of you, life will continue, and we will be focused on living. I'm certain you wouldn't want us to spend the rest of our lives mourning you anyway. Howsoever often or rarely we do remember, though, it will be fondly.

Finally, I hope that we provided some amount of comfort to you in your last months. Thanks so much for being a part of this forum, a member of this "wonderful community of people" Teague is always talking about in commentaries.
Thanks for reading and writing.
Thanks for sharing.
And, from all of us: Thanks very much for listening! Goodnight, goodnight.

There was a really long featured article on TheVerge.com this week, and I thought my wife might like it, too. But she doesn't have a lot of time these days, so I recorded it for her to listen while she's driving.

Then, for fun, I posted a link in the comments:
http://www.theverge.com/2016/8/25/12608 … #390995097

I login today and find out that they FEATURED my recording!
http://www.theverge.com/2016/8/26/12658 … santa-cruz
When I thanked the guy who did that via email, he said it was great and they might have more recording for me to do!

I dunno about money or anything, but who knows?

HOLY CARP!

Thanks! I'll probably put out for comments one more time once I edit and tighten as much as I can. But the interim advice is super helpful.

I can't wait to record this!

Here's the current state of my sci-fi radio drama: end of each episode is a link to the next one, if anyone else feels like commenting. I welcome all criticism. I may not implement it, but I welcome it.

Technically, yes. Though I'm sure all the pipe-makers on the forums I've been reading would scream in fury and rage at the sky for that "gross over-simplification"

I dunno. The only hard part was drilling the long skinny tube.

I made this. Didn't really know much about pipe-making (after some research, found out that pipe-making is a freakin' serious thing. More jargon than I care to learn).

It's oak. Rough cut on a saw, drilled the stem and chamber, then filed and sanded the edges. Light finish comes from rubbing with olive oil and buffing. After the inaugural smoke it works!

Only thing I might change is to plug up the intake on the stem with clay and poke it with a needle to better regulate airflow. It's a bit too easy of a draw at the moment.

Can you tell me who has the bad audio? I thought we were both fine, but if there's a problem I want to fix it.

It was (I think) your buddy with the deeper voice? It may just be the nature of his voice needing some EQ tweaking, but the sound was very "noisy"

And hey. If you wanna third guy to add dynamics, let me know. It might be interesting to have two best friends and a guy who knows literally nothing about you wink

Ok, feedback.

I know this is why you had a hard time starting the podcast, but I would strongly recommend you add a little more structure to this. Hey, What's Up? could surely work as a concept, but listening to 50-odd minutes of rambling discussion was.....hard to do.
I'll make my suggestions, and please reject them if you wish smile

1) Make a time limit. I believe there was a survey done a bit back that landed on 20 minutes as the optimal length for a podcast. Anecdotally, I agree. I strongly dislike podcasts that are 5 minutes or less. And unless there's a good reason (such as a movie commentary), I'd rather listen to three shorter episodes about three different things than listen to one hour episodes about three or more things. This depends on the conversation, of course, but I'd set the timer for 20 minutes and come with notes. If you have more than one or two things to talk about, just record a few episodes! Then you have something for when you can't record.

2) Audio quality. One of the voices sounded fine, the other didn't. Try to fix that. I realize there are limitations, but it's really, really hard to listen to anything with bad audio.

3) Even if the body of the cast is random, I'd recommend coming up with special content segments. Like, each of you bring an article to talk about for the last five minutes. Cool stuff going on in the nerd world. Give your conversation a little more of an anchor. Or maybe spend the last five minutes relating an article from the Odd News section of news sites, whatever. Do a Jimmy Fallon-style improv game. I dunno.

Speaking personally, I listen to podcasts first to learn something, and second because I like the hosts. Whatever that something is, make it applicable or interesting to an audience.
If you haven't heard of it, I'd recommend checking out We Have Concerns. It's a two-man podcast that has a great vibe. There's loads of stuff to talk about in this world.

That's all! These are just my thoughts.

At one point he drills through 20 meters in the time it takes to say 3 words. Unless there's meant to be dead air there, that's hella fast.

Yup. Dead air. I'll have to do a read through to see how much a pause I can get away with considering the tension.

ShadowDuelist wrote:

It's just, at one point they get called to come back immediately, then they just keep doing what they would have done anyway. In fact, they drill through an extra 200 meters of rock then they intended too. Which they do fast enough that I wonder why they didn't just drill it in the first place. Maybe if they decided to toss aside safety practices and attempt something much faster but really risky after they get the call?

Aha. Yup. You're right. While the time-scale is mentioned to have been shortened (going from 4 hours to less than 1) I totally get why it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
But your suggestion that they specifically toss safety aside is freakin perfect! It will escalate the tension, and give them a likely explanation when things go wrong. Self-blame ensues, Drama! Excitement! Conflict!
Thanks, man!

Two excellent points. I totally agree. I'll probably throw in a line or two about how much faster it'd be going with better equipment. Just to give a proper scale.

Dunno how to fix the time crunch issue yet, although I see what you mean...would you be able to pinpoint something in particular that defused it for you?
