Saw it after work today. Fun. Not perfect, no, but fun. I was very amused at how simple the story was: guy wants to kill everyone on a planet. Why? Because. Moving on. No moral ambiguity.

Nah, you know they'll have RDJ and Chris Evans on solid-gold leashes until the end of time.

I remember RDJ back when the first Iron Man movie came out that he thought he had a certain time frame, maybe 5 or 6 years, in which he thought he'd be young enough to play the character. I think the actors all signed five movie contracts, and with Avengers 2 that will be RDJ's final one with that deal. He may do more, he may not. Marvel has to be thinking long term, though.

You have to remember the actors from the first wave of films signed contracts that only committed them to a certain number of films. Once those are up, I'm sure Marvel has a plan to blow the movie universe up and recast everyone. This could be the start of that.

Well, if it's real roleplaying then the "actors" don't know what's coming next, and are improving in character. The definition of "reality tv" has become very vague, probably intentionally.

Well my point is that Bradley Cooper doesn't have a distinctive voice - he's DOING a voice as Rocket.  But there are lots of voiceover actors out there who can DO voices.   I don't think Bradley Cooper has much background at that.

I think nowadays they're at the point where if it's a live action movie they get a live action actor. That he will be replaced later by CGI is secondary. Maybe they wanted his on set improv skills, who knows. We don't know who else was up for the part. I'll go in assuming he is some nameless voice actor and judge it that way smile

But - like Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta Jones and other movie stars that have been miscast as cartoon voices - you look at Bradley Cooper, you don't listen to him.

I think this is where I'd have the advantage, as I honestly don't know what Bradley Cooper looks like. Or, to be more exact, I stopped paying attention to which person on screen had which name in the credits long ago. Too much work, and the new "stars" were only lasting a year or two anyway. Everyone, even those who get top billing, are a "that guy!" to me.

A few weeks ago, I found myself reminded of a children's TV show I had, in all honesty, never thought of since at least middle school: The Great Space Coaster. It was a live action syndicated show about three human singers on an asteroid with a bunch of puppets. It ran for five seasons in the early 80's, and I remember at least enjoying it. This led me to looking for episodes on Youtube, reading the wiki, etc. Apparently, the episodes are on tape slowly deteriorating. One of the cast members got some money together to save a few episodes, but the rest will probably be lost.

My first thought, naturally, was "damn, that's a shame. Someone should save them."

My next thought was, "Why?"

We live in a world where most of what humans have created before the 20th Century is lost forever. We also live in a world where everything created NOW can, theoretically, live forever digitally. But, should it? Is there any reason an average children's show shouldn't be lost forever? Or every episode of The Rockford Files or Star Trek? After the "that's a shame" moment, the world will move on. We will create something else. That idea comes to mind when I think of the BBC destroying early Doctor Who episodes. They were created to, literally, be disposable. The royalties contracts for BBC were set up to make it impossible for any given episode to be shown in the UK more than twice, after which a copy was made for overseas and the original tape was wiped. It was, partly I think, to keep everyone involved in making TV projects employed. Everyone from creators to actors to stage hands worked all year long because you couldn't show old episodes.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I'll throw it out there. Is there a value to saving EVERYTHING?

OK, about the Nazi compound. Why the hell did they think Hitler would need a HQ on the WEST coast? Can you imagine Germany trying to send a D-Day sized invasion force, plus all its supplies and re-enforcements, first TO the Pacific ocean, then across it? I think they just wanted a place to drink and bring their women.

It may also come from the fact there aren't rescue helicopters at Everest. If it was possible, the thinking goes, there would be. Obviously there are a ton of other factors.

I think the fact it was a Disney movie, back before Disney meant action film, had a lot to do with its failure. I know it kept me away. The trailer just looks... well, it screams TV movie smile I hadn't realized they changed the main female character. In the book, it's Betty Page, as the artist was one of those responsible for bringing her back into the spotlight in the early 80's. He was a pinup artist more than an illustrator, one reason there are so few Rocketeer comics by him. Jennifer Connelly is beautiful, but she's no Betty Page.

Bell in Buffalo developed early jetpacks. There was one at the Buffalo science museum awhile ago, which it seems is owned by the University of Buffalo. You can see it in action in the 70's kids TV series Ark II. Fun fact from the documentary on the Ark II DVDs: it only had around 30 seconds of fuel. When there was 10 seconds of flying time left, something started whacking you on the head telling you to get the fuck on the ground NOW. You didn't want to run out 100 feet up.

I just rewatched the original a few nights ago (never saw the Burton remake). I think they'll need to make some big changes in the next one in order for it to work for audiences today. In the original, Heston thought he was in a far off solar system the entire movie, even though there were humans and apes and English. That worked okay in 1968, but they can't get away with that nonsense these days at least without giving him a decent theory behind his thinking. I'm interested to see where they'll go with it.

I've always been interested in seeing them try and adapt the actual book smile

Yeah, the only dwarf I feel some sort of sympathy for at this point is Balin.

Haven't seen the movies, but as a fan of the book as a kid I always liked Balin. That's what made Moria the gut punch that it was in Fellowship of the Ring.

I like tarot cards. They're no good for telling you anything about the future or other people, but ARE a way to figure out what you yourself are thinking. A meditation tool, in other words. As a teen, I had a theory that I was unconsciously stacking the deck as I shuffled, but that was just silly smile

(my "occult" phase didn't last long, as I found it was as silly as the religion I was leaving, but there are interesting things to be found)

I always remember the battle because when the other team of 4th and 5th graders put on their school musical in around 1979 (after the animated version), they sang a version of "10 Little Indians" as the Dwarfs were killed off.

The intent was to play him as a druggie without actually saying it (too keep the rating), but there may not be much difference between that and your theory smile

To be fair, in the book Bilbo basically hides during the final battle.

Jodorowsky's Dune
http://www.marcstorrs.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/jodorowskys_dune-800x1200-785x1177.jpg

I won't speak to the technical side of this documentary, as it is your simple follow the story of the history of something with talking heads. However, that story is fascinating. It focuses on this rather crazy director who wanted to do a movie based on Dune without bothering to read the book. In fact, while someone obviously did indeed read it, Jodorowsky himself seems to have missed the actual message of the book, substituting his own. My sister commented that it seems the unmade movies tend to be more brilliant than the ones which make it onto film, and that seems to be the case here. I can't see the thing working, although it would have been a fascinating train wreck. If I have a criticism of the documentary, it is that there are no dissenting opinions. All interviewed love the director, although his son basically said he was abused a bit while "trained" to play Paul.

I will mention this quote, which takes something said on WAYDM in a slightly different direction:

"When you make a picture, you must not respect the novel. It's like you get married, no? You go with the wife, white, the woman is white... you take the woman, if you respect the woman, you will never have a child. You need to [makes a ripping sound] open the costume and to... To rape the bride. And then you will have your picture. I was raping Frank Herbert, raping, like this! But with love, with love."- Jodorowsky

For High School Spanish, we went to see a Menudo movie smile

Actually, films we were shown as actual part of the class movies, as opposed to "don't feel like teaching" stuff, were rather rare. I remember watching "Bless the Beasts and the Children" after reading the book in English. Rather shocking language to my tender ears smile
