Saw Thor. Didn't hate it. Will probably forget that I saw it within a month.

Somehow my complement on production values turned into a criticism of topic. I have not been a Topic Criticiser in the past and I am not now a Topic Critic.

The political discussion was interesting and entirely appropriate.

Having read this thread before listening I was expecting the switches and still managed to entirely miss when Eddie replaced Dorkman until 10 minutes later.

Phi's Brain: Huh, this discussion took a turn for the political. I suppose that's normal for commentaries with Bryan and Edd... that was slick.

Being on the front page of DIF gives my life meaning. That is one shiny page.

Based on my post in the "Bad movies I love" thread, I should have posted here.

Speed Racer: I love the editing and the colours. It rolls along at a zippy pace and is almost entirely visual story telling. It's like watching a kaleidoscope that also has plot. An obvious plot, but it works. I like the characters, especially Trixie and her relationship with Speed. She's not stupidly jealous or demanding or any of those girlfriend stereotypes that end up in movies.

It was actually the first Blu-ray I saw, and my expectations were exceedingly low. I ended up enjoying watching it from beginning to end. It's also got my favourite movie disc menu design (no ads, no menu, the movie just starts).

I love it.

Despite the kid and the monkey.

Later, as a direct result of jeremiah4226's comment, executives conclude that DIF should have a laugh track.

I'm not a fan of laugh tracks in general since they always feel canned and affect the pacing. I understand that a live audience is useful to give actors live feedback (I hear directors are good for that too...), but I object to being informed that something is funny and half the time it's just distracting.

I'd rather BBT not have a laugh track, but there it is. Incidentally, Big Bang Theory is mostly filmed in front of a live audience, but presumably the laughs are "sweetened" afterwards.

RadioLab has a segment about professional sitcom laughers in their Laughter show. The specific story starts around 22:30, but fans of DIF aren't fazed by mere hour long podcasts.

I really don't agree with Dorkman's comment on The Big Bang Theory being "geek blackface". My best guess is that he's only seen some of the episodes from the first season where the writers and actors were still figuring out their characters. For sure they started with stereotypes, but the show really improved once they added some dimensions.

There's an article about how Penny started out as an object of male gaze on the show but then developed into a real person. I suspect Dorkman latched on to the same thing, but with the male characters.

Also, any show with cameos from George Takei, Steve Wozniac, Summer Glau, Wil Wheaton (recurring), etc. deserves some geek credibility.

Edit/sidebar: The term "geek blackface" itself is hilarious. I am determined to use it in a conversation some day.

Do any of you find it hard to watch a movie now without doing continuous commentary?

Describe each panelist without saying what they look like, what they wear, their professional role, or backstory.

Speed Racer, if movies that we actually think are good count.

Would it be possible to get the show notes in the thread as well as in the file? I remember at least one or two things I wanted to check out that were mentioned but can't remember the names or time codes now.

I'm not a big  fan of Serenity, probably mostly because they killed off Wash.

I get that it's the Serious Business cue, but it just messed with my impression of the characters in the wrong way. The way I saw it, Wash was one of the few things holding Zoe together, and Zoe was one of the few things holding Mal together. That and the ship, which was also trashed.

Which leaves us with bitter angry characters becoming even more bitter and angry. I'm not very interested in that character arc, myself.

If we have to kill someone off, kill Zoe off in some heroic way and have Wash grow up a bit. It still sucks, but I would have been slightly more with the movie until the end.

I'll admit I recognized the name but couldn't remember where from. Taryn Anwar.

The "stolen" Flickr photo in the opening montage wasn't actually stolen at all, and there definitely wasn't any suing, but it's still a cool story (bro).

Until I listened to this commentary I didn't realise that there were two "The Blob" movies, having only seen the 1958 version. I'm glad to know that the original wasn't the one Trey was so proud of animating. Because that always confused me. A lot.

Regarding the whole "genetic degradation clone trope", I actually assumed that he was suffering from plain old radiation sickness that anyone could get. In fact, I figured that's why they had clones in the first place and switched every three years. Use one for three years until he's nearly dead from radiation sickness, then replace him with one stored underground. Presumably the original Sam Bell didn't have a three year contract, just a few months.

They really put a lot of up front investment in, though. That was a lot of backups...

Counterexample! All it takes is someone running Linux, with Rhythmbox to download podcasts, and a Sansa Fuze to listen. QED! Anyway, download from the website it is.

Though, really, the Fuze should be able play AAC. It plays darn near anything else.

Wait, you guys have an RSS feed? Or just the iTunes feed thing. I jumped through hoops to get the iTunes feed to work without iTunes, but now it seem to only be downloading the .m4a versions, which don't work on a Fuze.

Bonus round: Listen to the commentary again and replace "Kung Fu" with "porn" and "fight" with "sex".

Dorkman: This is good, like if you watch this from a choreography perspective, this is how you keep a lot of people involved in a scene. Especially once this guy gets involved, there's a lot of personality to the fighting. It's not just moves, but they're kicking him like trying to get him out of the way and fighting each other simultaneously once he gets in there.

Eddie: For my money that's what Kung Fu movies and the genre does really well is really the character comes out in the fight. That's when the characters really come alive is in the fight scenes. And you learn so much just by her expressions and you know so much about her just by how she fights.

Dorkman: Yeah, just watch this, this exchange right here, the three of them moving together is amazing.

I'd be fine with things only affecting one level down, otherwise you'd just have to kick from the top, but I'm pretty sure that they noticed the van hit the railing even in the snow world. Maybe there's a strong muting effect. They were at .95 gravity so you couldn't tell tongue

It's just that they specifically mentioned that the drugs they were using left the inner ear entirely unaffected. Why bother say that explicitly? (Not that falling in dreams has much to do with the physical inner ear, but whatever)

I really enjoyed Inception visually, but the more I think about it I keep thinking of ways it didn't follow it's own rules.

- I was never clear if kicks were done from one level up or from your current level, since either seemed to work. Kicking was introduced as being used from a higher level, but if kicks work from one level up and affect "awake" individuals one level down, why didn't Arthur jump up a level when the van went off the bridge?

- The zero gravity was awesome, but why did lower levels still have gravity?

- If dying when sedated drops you to limbo, how does dying/jumping off a building from inside limbo jump you up a level (for Ariadne) or all levels (for Dom and Saito)? Or is it mostly that you fully acknowledge that you're in a limbo dream and "find yourself" and thus wake up? I think they were kind of going for that, but equating finding yourself with suicide is a bit...odd.

- A 10 second free fall in Earth gravity is about 1500ft, though I think they had 10 seconds after the music until Yusuf hit the edge of the bridge, hence them "missing the first jump". They would have had maybe 2 or 3 seconds after that till the van hit the water.

In the end, I'm actually willing to forgive a lot since it's nearly all in dream space. And it's pretty. And ambitious.

While watching I was actually thinking that Dom was in Mal's dream for the whole time. She knew about the top, so she could make it topple if she wanted to. They made a big point about not letting others hold your totem, and she knew all about his since it has been hers. Also, at one point she's talking about how Dom's "real" life is like a dream with him being chased around the world by faceless authorities while trying to get back to an unseen home. Obviously the ending didn't really carry out my theory, but I thought it made some sense.
