Alright thanks Teague. I forgot to mention that the breakdown was also meant to function for people who had no knowledge of 3D (namely most of my class) and also show most of the process for my teachers (part of the assignment). So yah.

Maybe we should market Down in Front booze. We have that technology at Cahuenga Labs. Hm.
Although I'm not quite sure what cynicism tastes like...or how you would bottle it It's a prospect worth looking into though.
Lol, nicely done guys!
You got some decent glide times off that thing.
me = jealous
Thanks guys!
And I'm sure Trey does :P
As far as the stiffness goes, a lot of that was just plain and simply I was still figuring out how to use Maya.
To go Behind the Scenes a bit, my original plan was not to have the upper bulb be the primary form of propulsion (Like it is in the final), but actually to have the lower spiral be the part that convulsed and propelled it. Which would have been pretty cool I think, but when it came time to rig it, the entire thing just fell apart and I didn't have the time to figure it out, so I switched over to the back up plan (Which is what you see in the final). Which still looks pretty sweet.
And also part of it was just running out time, I would have like to refine the animation a bit more but I was running short on time and had to get the thing rendered, so what can you do.
As far as school goes, I haven't heard back anything officially as far as a grade wise or anything (Which I don't really care a whole lot about anyways), but from what I heard, everyone who saw it was pretty impressed, which makes me happy :)
For the color scheme I was was actually really debating between the color schemes when I was working on this thing. So much so that if you look at the practical light on her hand it's actually a bluish color.
And I'm sure I'll get around to using the little guy in something else, but for now I have bigger and better things to work on! Which is as it should be, no?
And since I have you available Teague, what did you think of the breakdown? It was pretty rushed together, but do you think it was it a decent portrayal of the process?
I haven't really had much of a chance to do any sort of breakdown of a shot before, and I'm not sure if covered all my bases properly.
I so wish you guys would do some kind of live session, but none the less great one loved it 5* all the way
I second that. When I go back and listen to the Geekza commentaries, I'm suddenly jealous, one because I wasn't able to sit in on that chatroom and second because I want to be able to chime in if I have something to add Which happens alot, so maybe you guys won't want to do it
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
That is all.
That is probably the new most confusing thing I have ever read. Right above Teagues implication that Goldblum caused the remake of Death At a Funeral.
Oh god. I had a lovely rant a while back about Death at a Funeral, I have no clue what happened to it, but it was a thing of beauty.
I still just can't believe it, it just seems to be at such a level of ridiculousness that it can't be possible, but then well there it is.
It's not even so much the fact they are simply remaking (Although that still pisses me off) it's that they are turning it into this horrid "Lets use every single black stereotype possible to make it funny for an American audience" thing. Ugh.
I'm not sure I'll ever forgive Zoe Saldana.
Well I guess I can start off the actual projects.
This was my term project for last term at Vancouver Film School. Basically we chose a subject that we wanted to do a project on, and were let loose. I chose to do a VFX piece, namely to start transferring my Blender 3D knowledge in to some more industry standard programs. (Namely Maya)

Theres a lot wrong with it I know, some it started from ground zero, just inexperience with the programs and equipment, and some of it was just running out of time.
And I guess I can throw this one up too. It's still very much a WIP, but I'm liking it so far. BUt it's kinda hit a bit of a stand still now that school is back into full swing, and I'm working on a really cool project for it.

And yah feel free to peruse the rest of my blog as you please.
No probs, I mean Bill Murray, Chris Rock, Laurence Fishburne, David Hyde Pierce, William Shatner and bodily functions, what more can a man ask for?
Well this is true I suppose. But in all honesty I haven't really felt much of the typical film school vibe that you guys all complain about whenever I mention it. Maybe it's just because I'm still in my first year, and am focusing more on the VFX/3D side of things than others.
Although I do have to say, much like Teague, I just sat down to write a script for our term project a week or so ago and I can honestly say that I haven't been able to write a script with that kind of ease in...ever really. So I thank you guys for that.
Not sure if it really counts as a "guilty" pleasure, but I always enjoy some good ol' Osmosis Jones every once and a while.
Although one that probably does count is Quest for Camelot (If you can't tell I definitely have a thing for 90's animated films). It just sorta hit me at the right time I suppose and I am able to step back and say, you know, it's not a great movie, but I still love it too death anyways.
Oh, well that I can understand, but this is coming from a guy who has been making movies all through High School, has known this is the industry he wants to go into for years, and is now in Film School preparing to go into this industry professionally.
So I guess I have some catching up to do.
Man this is really weird, I would have totally bet that I was in the majority of the listening population. You know the one that watches (Or at least tries as hard as possible) to watch the movie WITH the commentary. But I guess it's totally the other way around.
Anyways, great ep. guys.
On the subject of stuff we have learned over this year: I have come to realize how little I critically think about what I was watching. At least on a level even approaching what you guys are at.
And as far as the big surprise commentary this week, I'm gonna place my bet on Titanic
Alright, perhaps skill was not quite the word i was looking for. Lets try experience.
While I am not saying that these guys should have been able to give say a Billy West level of performance (since folks around here seem to like using him as an example), all I'm saying is that over the period of an actors life they learn to develop a certain amount of ability when giving a performance to not sound like Joe blow from your local kids television programing. (And I would say that granted the voice is not nearly as important when you are doing film but it still requires a certain amount of respect to be given. It takes both.)
So all I am saying is that given the amount of experience these actors have had, their performances should not have been NEARLY this bad. (Yes I am going to pull the Happy Feet card here. So we know Elijah wood can give at least a semi decent performance behind a mic. But for some reason it didn't show up in 9.)
I'll wait until you actually see the thing to discuss further.
I think one of things that happened with the whole Star Trek franchise (This coming from a guy who grew up watching Voyager and DS9 (In reruns obviously)and has some basic peripheral knowledge about TOS, TNG (And I havn't even seen Enterprise) is that each series was trying to emulate the style, at least somewhat of the previous series. While not really adding much in the way of anything new, DS9 got pretty close, and that's probably why it's my favorite of the series'. But the whole Star Trek thing just got stale and old. People didn't want to sit around and watch people discuss the anti matter containment field.
And I'm perfectly willing to nail that down to the whole MTV generation thing, or whatever you want to call it. The audience was different, but Star Trek tried to stay the same.
So, at least in my opinion, the new Star Trek movie is exactly what each of the new series SHOULD have been doing in the first place. Updating the style, tone and technology to match the current audience.
So while I can easily say that the new one is my favorite Star Trek anything, it's also the only film that has been made with me in mind. (Me being a child of the 21st century effectively)
Alright, alright, fair enough. But I mean these guys are experienced actors, and in the movie they sound exactly like some sesame street actors or somethin. I know hey aren't people have trained to do voice acting, but they are still actors and they should have been better than they were is all I'm saying.
Obviously, yes, they should have gotten experienced voice actors, I'm not debating that. But for who they had, the performances seemed remarkably disproportionate to skill.
Well in response to Jefferys rant of epic proportions, I bow sir. That was a thing of beauty.
I can honestly say that I hadn't really ever sat down and thought about the plot in those terms. But I definitely agree on most of your points, there's a few I'm a little iffy on. But that can just be pinned down to how far I'm willing to let a movie stretch the bounds of logic.
But in the end it still remains on of my favorite movies of late, for all the reasons you listed and more (Namely Abrams dedication to using as much real stuff during production as possible).
I'd be up for that!
@Jeffery Harrell: I would be interested in hearing how you think the plot completely disintegrates?? It seemed like a perfectly sound Star Trek plot to me.
9 was weird. The short was this amazing piece of post apocalyptic sci-fiedness, and then the movie just tries to reach up to that and fails miserably.
The plot was weak, the acting was so-so (Which is odd considering who they got to voice them), and the tone was all over the place.
What i mean by tone, is that in the buildup to the release, it was hailed as this amazing piece of CG that was finally meant for adults, and that it would be this really dark CG movie that would FINALLY be for adults. And then it comes out and there are moments where that sorta feels true (A few of the battle sequences come to mind), but then there are these massive dips where it suddenly dives into these weird Dreamworksy "this ones for you, kids" moments. And just the entire thing felt like it was trying to be really dark and adult while still being kid friendly, and that just doesn't work. Not to mentio all the Oh-so-obvious "teaching" moments they try to slip in. At times it just felt like a really really bad after school special.
So it just failed miserably on almost all accounts in my books (Exception being art design, frickin amazing Visuals. It's very much like Avatar in that respect...except that Avatar is still an enjoyably watchable movie.)
And I've never seen Doc Hollywood, so that probably doesn't help. But is that really just it? (I mean I can definitely understand it, if it is. It just seems that most people I try to talk to about Cars, it seems alot deeper than just that. But they usually don't wanna talk about it
As I said on the TFN boards, definitely not one of my favorite (Although like you guys said, if it was left to the first 20, it would have been magical, but alas). As soon as Dug enters it just turns into this weird Dreamworksy "romp" through the jungle. Although I had never really thought about the second bit of magic element, it does totally make sense to me now. It started to lose me right after Dug was introduced. And then even more so after the other Dogs.
(And as much as I do find Alpha's squeaky voice hilarious, at the same time it really feels like the cheap shot.) And then as soon as we get Dogs serving dinner and flying planes and all of a sudden Pixar is exceedingly politically correct. Just nothing about it felt Pixar, you know?
And I gotta ask am I seriously the only person on the planet that doesn't HATE CARS??!?!!? Every where I turn I see people totally hating on Cars and I just don't get it. I would BEG you guys to do that one next, just so I can understand what the hell everyone's problem with it is. I mean it's not like I'm a huge fan of cars in general (in fact quite the opposite. I know absolutely jack about anything about cars.)
Maybe it's just one of those Teague and Phantom Menace things....
(Oh and Bob Peterson (writer/story guy) was the voice of Roz, Mr. Ray and Dug. And Brad Bird was Edna. Plus there are like 50 million other in house voices scattered everywhere (The Chicken Fish in Nemo for one (Oh my gossh, Nemos schwimming out to shea!!) yah that one.
I do have something to say...I can find the the movie page, and thusly can't download the commentary.
Is it just me? (I have refreshed several times, so it's not that)
I'll totally second anything Muppet related, but Christmas Carol is an especially good one, still my favorite Muppet film. Just sneaking past "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz"...(can't you just feel the sarcasm. It's all warm and snuggly like.)
And I would also second Back to the Future. It's seems like such a staple, it's hard to believe you guys haven't done it already.
I'd also like to put out there, Moon and Sunshine. Bot amazing Space movies. Although I would definitely put Sunshine way further up the list. Just something about Moon felt off to me, I can't really pin it down to anything overly specific, but I have a few notions, I'd love to hear what you guys thought of it. And then Sunshine is just a beautiful piece of space awesomeness.
@Brian: I always got the impression that they pretty much did it right after the first brother had to get them amputated. So that it would at least, to her, just look like the wound had just reopened and was taking a while to heal.
I don't think that they would have waited til it had healed fully to do it, one because of the whole wife thing, but then also because they are already so committed to the trick, that they wouldn't want to leave any discrepancy between them for too long.
Shifty Bench: When did the wife ever help with the cutting of the fingers? The actual cutting was just the brothers. I mean she was heping him stop the bleeding, but she just thought that the wounds had reopened. She had "no" (Notice the quote marks) idea that there was 2 of em.
