So I bought this Bandai model kit of an astronaut called "ISS EMU" and having put it together (it can be assembled without glue) it's one of my favourite things now.

It's not quite finished, need to paint. It's a really neat kit and comes with a Canadarm foot-rest thingymebob. Also in the box is a decal sheet with various flags and mission patches from 10 missions so you can almost choose who you'd want this to represent.

Because this is a space nerd thread, I've 'made him up' to be Michael Foale in his STS-103 attire, a British-American astronaut who I've long admired and went to the same school I did here in the UK (King's School Canterbury).

Will take better pics when done, as these really don't it justice. Here's a proper one from the box big_smile

Maybe it's not a conscious story choice on their part, but a result of a little desensitisation caused by the frequency of catastrophic destruction we've seen on the screen over the years, from 2012, Transformers 3, Avengers etc. and the fact that it's all done in computers with nary a practical effect involved - no blowing up a building or model and no actors/extras being directed on a set to be killed.

I suspect that the creative teams behind GI Joe Retaliation, Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel either aren't even aware of the scale of collateral damage in their movies. It's just a wow moment.

I completely agree. Made a comment a couple of pages back about how all these recent blockbuster movies have our heroes fail to stop millions of people dying. That's not how I would define a hero.

I'm likely to raise my ire if I go any further, and I'm really trying to avoid working myself up these days. Suffice it to say, I consider AOTC to be 'Transformers bad'. Almost everything in it rubs me the wrong way, more so for the 'detective' subplot than the ultimately harmless love story part.

I agree that the writing is terrible. It didn't used to bother me so much as a teenager, but I with a decade's distance from my "WHOA, so THIS is Star Wars" moment in 2002, I can see how y'all were disappointed. So yeah, hate on it all you want, but this was the one that made me fall in love with the SW universe.

I get the impression this was due in part to Hayden Christensen? Apologies if it's not, just that over the years I've interacted with quite a few female fans of Star Wars who seem to like the prequels almost solely because of him at first, going positively gaga over him. Seems teenage girls respond to the angst-ridden, bad boy character as well as the pretty face.

I'm not sure how you can edit around Yoda incredulously fighting Dooku and that duel's lacklustre resolution, or that Yoda starts a war to save a single Jedi and then acts like it had nothing to do with him.

Forgive my ignorance, Teague, but what was your movie?

Tis a Babylon 5 reference my dear fellow, hence the picture above. The eponymous station gets its 5 designation because 1-4 were destroyed and/or disappeared.

And here's the part where I recommend watching that series.

And that would kill him...

How about enticing them with the gateway drug that is Young Guns? Then accidentally on purpose replace Young Guns II in the player with the bluray of The Searchers - my favourite western of them all.

And if you haven't yet seen The Searchers on bluray, then I would highly recommend it. That and Ben-Hur have resulted in the most satisfying experience with the HD format for me so far - they really do look superb.

Is it just me or is that picture rather unnerving?

Found this just now and thought it was pretty cool

I thought I read somewhere else that Lucas hadn't even spoken with Abrams yet? Wouldn't it be difficult to make that kind of judgement then?

I am perhaps being a touch harsh here, but I suspect that HBO/D&B would not have picked up the show had they read books 4 and 5. The storyline in those just isn't as adaptable to TV. You couldn't really have an entire season treading water, let alone one and a half (the latter half of ADWD does pick up the pace). It's one thing to create a blockbuster show and have it run out of steam 3-4 series in because you hadn't planned that far ahead at first, quite another to go that way deliberately.

I have confidence, though, that D&B can make AFFC and ADWD work. As you say, Phi, by mixing the plotlines/POVs together into chronological order, trimming away some of the detail (Brienne's torturously plodding journey especially), you could get a season out of each.

I've always wanted to try that too, editing together the books into order (GRRM jokily suggests to do this in his infamous Afterword) and seeing how they read. Granted, I think the narrative 'theme' of each would come undone, but perhaps it would be more fun to read?

I turned the trailer off just before Smaug appeared as I didn't want to be spoiled on what he looked like, but is that real Trey? Looks like a cartoon.

Lancelot and Guinevere would have been an interesting angle on it. As such, both parties are suppressing their love and affection, rather than the senator 'just because'. I think that would have made Anakin's part of it more interesting certainly, since he's wrestling with his upbringing and the Jedi way more, rather than finding loopholes and relishing the opportunity to be a rebel (an aspect of his personality I find to be at odds with the political views he later espouses). If anything, I would have reversed their positions in the movie, and had her being much more interested in him. Which incidentally, I've seen in various iterations of the Lancelot and Guinevere story (Excalibur and Knights of the Round Table).

Generally though, Anakin needs to show he has qualities beyond looking like a sweet sixteen idol cover, and Padme needs to be shown to develop her feelings because of these qualities.

I enjoyed this one. Didn't have any major issues with it although I did think the ending fight went a little long and the twisty-turney snake creature was completely unnecessary.

I confess was distracted by three things throughout - 1) why do they give Zod and his mates a huge great ship to take into the phantom zone? 2) why must Zod chose Earth as the site of the new Krypton, and 3) why is Superman not being heroic and taking the fight out of inhabited areas?

Regarding this last question, one thing that has struck me this year is that I've seen three big tentpole movies where the third act sees literally millions of people getting killed and the heroes failing to stop it happen. I'm not sure what this storytelling element is supposed to do, be dark?

I thought Henry Cavill did a great job and was surprised by the strong performances by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. Jor-El was really good at playing Russell Crowe as well wink

edit - how can anyone say this film hasn't any stakes? The lives of the entire human race are at stake, Superman's life is at stake. The life of that screaming pretty brunette from the Daily Planet we barely know is at stake.

I've never heard of that movie, and yet that poster really makes me want to see it. Completely understand how you felt the same way when you saw it.

I think that Frodo poster the only poster I still have lying around. It's a really good one. I also liked the Two Towers one.

And the ROTK with Aragorn continued that minimalist 'central theme' of the movie.

I much preferred these versions to the standard ones (used for the DVDs etc.) which just have a bunch of floating heads, which I loathe in poster design.

Same here. Got tickets to see it Saturday.

I'm not that invested in the character or the franchise, unlike with Thor say, so I won't be gutted if it turns out average. I figure that as long as it doesn't have a miscast Lex Luthor in it, I'll be fine.

That is a great Man of Steel poster.

There are too many to list as my favourites, but I always thought this was one of the best. Ironically, it scared me away from watching the movie for years. It perfectly encapsulates the spirit and tone of the movie.
