Topic: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

Trey, at least in my case, is preaching to the choir in insisting everyone should watch the best John Wayne movie, if not the best western, ever made. So, how can we force the issue?

If availability is somehow an issue, when I went into Walmart the other day to look for a theatrical version of Superman (tons of great animated versions for sale, but not that), I instead picked up a $4 copy of The Cowboys. You can, too smile

Re: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

Well, we seem to have had decent success getting folks to try Butch Cassidy, and The Sting, so maybe that'll help?   See kids?  Just because a movie is from the '70's doesn't mean it's slow and boring.

Sure, it can mean that - but not always, is my point.   So try some Cowboys, just a little.  Maybe you'll like it!   Then you can watch cartoons.  smile

btw, in addition to The Cowboys, I'm also starting a new campaign to encourage everyone to watch Paper Moon.   Just rewatched that one and... my god.   Soooo good.

Re: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

I'm on board.

Paper Moon and The Cowboys would make a pretty weird double feature. Who wouldn't love going from Tatum O'Neal to Slim Pickens?

Re: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

I had a blast at the recording of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid so I am all for John Wayne-my grandmother loves a good Western. I'm sure I can borrow her copy wink

Re: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

I'm another fan of The Cowboys, it's bloody good. And I am really not a fan of the genre at all. It's a coming of age drama though, maybe that is why I like it.

Re: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

This is true - it's really about coming of age (and also about growing old, as personified by Wayne's character) and just happens to take place on horseback.

Also, like a lot of pre-Syd Field movies, the story turns are sometimes really surprising - several things happen where you can't help but think "wow, they sure wouldn't do that in a movie now"

Another reason for you guys to do this movie.

Would love to.  So far we're still on Step One: convincing the rest of the panel to watch it.  smile

Re: The "guilt them into watching The Cowboys" thread

How about enticing them with the gateway drug that is Young Guns? Then accidentally on purpose replace Young Guns II in the player with the bluray of The Searchers - my favourite western of them all.

And if you haven't yet seen The Searchers on bluray, then I would highly recommend it. That and Ben-Hur have resulted in the most satisfying experience with the HD format for me so far - they really do look superb.

That'll be the day.

/the cool kids got that

Yeah, of the "classic" (as opposed to The Cowboys which is more post-modern and ironic) Westerns, The Searchers is probably my favorite too.

Well, I believe you pilgrims will totally do The Searchers someday... just as sure as the turnin' of the Earth.

I still want to know how you're going to quilt me into watching cowboys.

Wait, guilt? Oh, that's not as interesting.

How about a double header, starting with "The Magnificent Seven?" That should get everyone in the mood

I don't have much to contribute, other than I was raised on John Wayne movies. His characters helped define manhood for me, my father and his father before him. The next one a' you what starts spreadin' pernicious rumors of cross-dressing or other fetishism, I'm gonna shoot ya'.

Holy shit.  So that's what The Big Bang Theory is like?   That's some weapons-grade crap right there.

Anyway, as for the Trey Stokes action figure... tempting.  Very tempting.
