I do think that that's a movie that should be made. Teague, Brian, Trey, Eric from the other board, I need you guys to take three years out of your life and make Sunshine properly. Please?

OK, so I totally agree with you guys. I'm glad I watched everything once, but next time I watch this (and I totally will), I'm just going to liberally skip anything dealing with Tilt Shift Guy.

Back to the commentary:

How did you guys remember the indie movie Rose Byrne was in called Rage With Placid Lake, but forgot the indie movie Rose Byrne was in called Star Wars Episode II Attack Of The Clones?

A $500 computer is a way of demonstrating that you have money? Seriously? That's less than most people have spent on their World of Warcraft subscription. That's like, almost two car payments. That's saving fifty bucks out of your paycheck for a couple months. If I had *money*, I think I could think of some better ways to be a jerk about it than buying a big iPod touch.

Just watched the movie for the first time ever. Kinda loved it. I guess everyone hates the shoed-in villain? But it sort of worked for me. I dunno, I'm not gonna jump on this movie's back too much.

I'll poke my head back in once I've listened to the commentary.

Aims forced me to watch Constantine last night. I kinda loved it. Now I need to strap her down and get her to watch Sunshine before Monday.

I'll admit that I didn't explain my point terribly clearly, so lemme give it a go again:

I believe my point was not 'it was popular therefore it's perfect,' and more like 'it was popular, so perhaps you should give it a little benefit of the doubt,' and 'it was popular, and your criticism is coming across as more of a backlash than honest critique.'

I had problems with the movie too, but I'm still able to enjoy it on many levels, and I think there's a lot of work that went into making it that got glossed over in favor of what I felt was a series of overzealous arguments.

I do think that Goldman calling 'Ryan' a 'detestable piece of shit' was pretty weak. I mean, come on. I didn't love love love every minute of Ryan, but it's nowhere near as bad as his 10,000 words would have you believe. As he states in his own essay, he decided to hate the movie based on its hype before he even walked in the theater.

And Pauline Kael's one paragraph dismissal of Star Wars is exactly the sort of hackwork I'm talking about. OK, she didn't like it, but after it's made billions of dollars and started a six film franchise and countless other works that many people love to this day, perhaps she looked back and regretted that review. Perhaps she missed something really important in her rush to combat the 'hype' that she apparently hates so much.

Yeah, it feels kind of weak to trash such a popular movie. Maybe instead of harping on the use of mechs, you could have tried to figure out why people loved it so much?

Oh and by the way: mechs are awesome, and I loved their use in Avatar.

And a human-colored Avatar for Quallrich is the worst idea I've ever heard.

Man, that's crazy. I pay all of an extra dollar (in Japanese money) for 3D. It doesn't even factor into my decision.

Ten extra dollars? TEN?

What horrible money-grubbing theater are you going to that charges a $10 3D surcharge on every ticket?

Christians will argue that there are passages in the Bible which do exactly that.

I've seen them argue that. I've never seen one provide such a passage.

The movie was pretty rough, but when you got the mood right, it really worked. We especially liked the shot of the alien thing talking, with the sparking behind him.

Obviously you're still learning the tools, and you had a small team and not an awful lot of time, but the compositing and tracking could have been a lot, lot better.

In our new post-apocalyptic world, I hope you're wearing that on a sign around your neck.

Come to think of it, it wasn't a bad idea to do that BEFORE the apocalypse, too.
