Let's look at the first 22 years of Scorcese's career, starting with Who's That Knocking At My Door? in 1967.  By 1989, he had directed TWELVE films, including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Last Waltz, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ... And was in the middle of shooting Goodfellas.

Not even close.

To just follow up on my last post, of those Mean Streets is the only one I actually dig.  I never much cared for Raging Bull or Taxi Driver.  I see the skill inherit, I appreciate the craftsmanship...and that's it.  I don't actually enjoy it.

That said, Thelma Schoonmaker is one of my favorite editors.  She's pretty fearless and takes quite a few cues from Non-fiction editing and applies it well.

Let's not forget that this is about opinion.  I've been public plenty of times before saying that Scorcesse is the least favorite of "legendary," directors.  I think Coppola's praise is well earned and right on.  Same with Kubrick, Hitchcock, Goddard and Kurosawa.  Of all of those, Scorcesse to me is the weak link in the chain.  His stuff just doesn't connect as well as it seems with others.

Firstly, let me requalify my statement.  "Pound for Pound," means based on greatness vs output.  Charon has made 6 films.  Six.  They were all awesome in varying degree (I go to bat quite often for Great Expectations).  No one is discrediting Scorcesse's skill nor his importance to the time.  But amongst Scorcesse's better films are his not so great films, which Cuaron has yet to make.

Secondly, the straw man of "Cuaron built on the shoulders of..." Is equally applicable to Scorcesse and filmmaker like Goddard and Truffaut for which he famously gives credit to. I'm not here to discuss his place in history.  Scorsese still makes films during the time Cuaron does, hence the comparison.

Thirdly,  I would argue that DeNiro could have given an equally good performance with a few other directors.  Directors can help guide performances, but they are not solely responsible for them.

Maybe I'll get hammered for the anniversary show or something since the world is crying out for my belligerent inebriation.

Well, without jinxing it, there is a solid chance I just lined up coffee sponsorship for the day.  More on that later.

It's not like my recipes are worth their weight in gold, or anything.  If you donate in the next 5 minutes, you get it emailed to you.  Done.

This doesn't really bother me.  Drew at Hitfix rightly pointed out that Arndt is being used to establish framework for the other films as well and as we get deeper into Pre-Pro on each movie individually, expect to see this sort of thing.  JJ still has to direct these things and while serving fandom, he also has to work his own sensibility to it, so this shouldn't be a shock.

Apparently there were two very specific plot points that Kasdan and Abrams agreed on but Arndt didn't, so it's easy to see who won.

I'll definitely make the ramen, but times are subject to change.  We'll finalize later.

Sounds like an opportunity for a secondary donation scheme, like pledging when people run marathons and stuff.  For every contiguous hour Mike stays at his post, you pledge x dollars...

Building upon this, I'll totally email the recipe for my meals to the highest donor in a 15 min block every time I bring food out.

I really dig that one.  Winter Soldier looks great and it's not an obvious reveal if you don't know the story.

There's a lot of the stuff in Prometheus that is gold.  I think Brian's "If they said football was played with sticks and a net it would unacceptable," bit is pretty great.  Obviously anything off Abyss is great for Trey.  I think some of the discussion on Twilight would be of interest to the Potter audience.

I thought about that.  It seems very on the nose, but yeah, grilled Game Hen or something seems appropriate.

I don't want to go too far on food tangent guys.  That's a value added feature.  Main attraction is the telethon itself.

I have a few exotic coffees (Bulletproof is the best), as well as some high caffeine organic Teas.

Actually, Prisoner of Azkaban should just be a Beef Wellington.  And While I'm at it, Ill find an excuse to remake the Oxtail Shepherds Pie.

Yeah, I think I may have to combine the two concepts.  Off the top of my head:

Philosophers Stone:  Slow Poached Egg over Nitrate Free Bacon Dashi
Chamber of Secrets: Stuffed Red Peppers, 4 different fillings
Prisoner of Azkaban: Smoked OxTail under Cauliflower Parsnip Mash (See the mash is imprisoning the.....)
Goblet of Fire:  Hand made Tsukemen Ramen in a spicy Shoyu Broth
Order of Phoenix: ?
Half Blood Prince: ?
Deathly Hallows 1: ?
Deathly Hallows 2: Pizza.  I'm done.

I definitely will be feeding the crew.  It's in my house so all my gadgets and pantry will be available to me.  I'm of a few minds about how to handle the cooking theme, and I might as well put it out there here.

1)  I could do 8 courses, one for each meal.  I would probably theme it around the title of each movie as that would time out to a good number of snacks for all.

2)  I actually am very passionate about food issues, especially healthy eating for cheap.  Here in America, cheap usually means utter crap.  I would like to challenge myself and also the audience and make enough food to feed 15-20 people for 24 hours straight, and it's all healthy and all under 100 bucks.  It has nothing to do with Potter, nothing to do with Malaria, it's just a side thing fro me.

Thoughts?

Does the Harry Potter Alliance know about your plans? Because HP+Charity is totally their thing and they do fundraising pretty seriously. http://thehpalliance.org/

We discussed this internally quite a bit.  Without going into much detail, we liked AMF because they can't be beat in terms of bang for your charity buck.  Several independent agencies list them as the least amount of operational costs per donation.  We like the HPA and they do great work, but for this particular go around, AMF was our pick.

I should make it clear that I actually don't identify as atheist.  I do not believe in a God as a singular masculine consciousness, but I stop just shy of saying atheist.  The difference is largely semantical but as a Buddhist, I kinda have this view as Universe and it's contents = God.

Don't want to speak for the hive mind, but since it's my house we'll be recording at, I think the best course of action here is save as much bandwidth for the stream and limit audience interaction to the chat.  We have some cool things in store in terms of multicam I believe (similar to what we did on LOTR) and I think we want the media pipeline flowing more out then in.
