A introduction class for beginners on a film set
Found this "lecture" on how to behave on a movie set. It's a long one (1 hour) and I made an audio version from it for myself to listen and you guys can download the mp3 version here.

@Zarban
Here in Iceland it is working rather well considering everything.

A little overview (from wikipedia):
The health care system is largely paid for by taxes (85%) and to some extent by service fees (15%) and is administrated by The Ministry of Welfare. A considerable portion of government spending is assigned to healthcare
There is almost no private health insurance in Iceland, and no private hospitals.

We pay for it with our taxes but then again... when the hit comes the system takes the biggest part of the blow.

Here is a little example. Few months ago my wife woke up one morning with a pain in her back. Three hours later she was admitted into the ER paralyzed. She had a virus infection in the spinal cortex and the inflammation paralyzed her from shoulders down. She is now in recovery and doing better although she is still in the hospital.

Ok let's look at this. Because we have been paying for the health system with our taxes we got world class health system. She has gone to countless different tests and scans.  She has had drugs that are so expensive that if we had to pay for them our self we would have been wiped out financially. She has been in hospital for almost four months and is geting access to amazing doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other specialized staff. She gets food, drugs and full service. I could go on and on but I'll keep this short.

Bottom line. We have payed since my wife got sick for the ambulance that took her to the hospital in dollars little under 38 bucks.

We pay for it in our taxes and the health system has been taking a massive hit because of the economic crash. The budget is being slashed rather heavily. But the doctors and the nurses are doing amazing work. Truth to be told most people I know think the US system is inhuman and nobody understands why you let the government  and the big business do this to you.

And Icelanders carefully constructed technology words out of old Icelandic words, right? So the Icelandic for television translates to reindeer-skin window or something.

It's a little more complicated but essentially yes smile We have a lot of old words which are being repurposed

The word Television translates to Sjónvarp witch translates back to Vision + Thrown (that witch is thrown). But we use this other word for screens (tv and computer). The word for screen is skjár. But that word used to be the window on a house that had a shaved and stretched skin (often reindeer) on it to let the light in but trap heat inside the house (we are using house liberally there).

One of the most complicated (and beautiful) of these words is the word for computer.

Computer => Tölva
The word Tölva is a composite of two words, Tala (Number) and Völva (shamanic seeress). So the word is this combination of numbers and predictions that totally encompass what computer do.

Sure... I'll play
Icelandic is lousy with these words.

The first one is the most beautiful of all these words in my opinion.
Midwife => Ljósmóðir => Light Mother
Idea => Hugmynd => Mind Picture
Rocket = Eldflaug = Fire fly (like in ´to fly´)
light sabre => Geislasverð => Beam Sword
Film => Kvikmynd => moving picture
Bat => Leðurblaka = Leather flapper or swatter

This one’s directed to Eddie and Matt. Have you guy’s ever thought about doing a sister podcast to Down In Front where you would explore more martial aspects of the cinema history.  You could bring in guests with knowledge pertaining to the subject.

I would propose to call the podcast Lead From Front (if you don't get it then get the hell out of my army).

You would cover pretty much anything you are interested in.

The Longest Day, Tora Tora Tora, Das Boat, The Hurt Locker, Platoon, Braveheart, Top Gun, The Green Zone, Full Metal Jacket, Pearl Harbor (if only for the attack). Saving Private Ryan (if only for the attack),  Word at War, Navy Seals, GI JANE, Enemy at the Gates, The Beast, Band of brothers (One podcast per episode), 24, Game of Thrones, The Pacific, The Best of the Best, Bloodsport, Ong Bak, Yojimbo , Warrior, Kung Fu Panda, Red Belt, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Gymkata, Drunken Master, Police Story, Ip Man, Enter the Dragon, 13 Assassins, The One-Armed Swordsman, Lone Wolf and Cup, Karate Kid, Tombstone, The Wild Bunch, Spaghetti westerns.

The list is endless but you get the gist...

Everything and anything is on the table.

So what do you guys say? Are you in?

Dude's - Few of my favorites

  • The Longest Day

  • The Iron Cross (sometimes seen it as The Cross of Iron)

  • Das Boot

  • Tora! Tora! Tora!

  • Letters from Iwo Jima

  • First part of Saving Private Ryan...

  • World at War (Documentary)

I never thought Pacific was all that good. It tried to force disjointed elements into a cohesive narrative but it did not work for me at least. It had some elements I liked but it in no way managed to follow Band of Brothers, in scope, acting and story.

Light saber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

Assuming I can wield it without killing myself.
- Does not run out of ammo.
- Relatively silent.
